The greatest generation was fortunate after WWII. The programs for housing and resettling veterans was fantastic then. Now, it seems, the country doesnt care as much because it affected a lot less of us. WWII basically affected every family. Then there’s Iraq/Afghanistan. Less than a percent of us know what it’s like. And the programs are not there.

That was a 21 gun salute. Not to be confused with the three volley's fired at a military funeral. A 21 gun salute can be fired for a head of state or any person earning that honor. The three volley's is only rendered to a person who died and had served in the military. The volley's in many ways is higher honor then the 21 gun salute.

Second comment. I'm a US Army veteran and Civil War reenactor. As such, I've stood my share of posts, parades, guard mounts and dog-and-pony-shows. I LOVE the look of the gentleman 2:27 . I've seen it a lot at our local Veterans Day parade. It's a look of sheer determination and will... "My ailments hurt. A lot. But I WILL march the whole route. I WILL keep pace. I WILL stand with my comrades one last time and I'd rather die where I stand than fall out in public." You have to respect that in this day in age.

My Great Grandfather was there along with an Uncle. They were heroes in my eyes even though I never got to meet them. My Great Grandfather died in 1984 and his Uncle who was there died in 1978. I still hold all that I have from them with honor. The journal my Great Grandfather kept from D-Day till V-E day tells the story through his eyes. His Uncle kept a journal in the small Bible he took with him, it tells the story of those he met along the way, those he gave prayers for to be given open arms in heaven. I wish they could of been here today to see how much their generation is still loved and remembered. But I know they are still looking down upon us all, watching us as we remember them each year on this day. I won't every forget and neither should the rest of the world, even when the last of the greatest generation passes away we much keep the memory of all they did and sacrificed so that we the world could have the freedom we do today.

Let us not forget this ever. Including the contributions from smaller nations to the invasion effort - it wasn't just Britain, France and the U.S. Canada had Juno Beach and landed an army there. Australia and New Zealand whose major contributions were in other theatres of the war still managed to put up five squadrons a piece under R.A.F. command - that alone was almost more than the aircraft that the Luftwaffe put up that day. There were Dutch, Poles, Czechs, Norwegians, Greeks, South Africans and more.

Something a lot of people are missing... The artillery piece the soldiers are firing is the M1 155mm 'Long Tom'. It's the same model of gun that supported these men from the hedgerows to the Elbe. It's a nice little detail that military historians notice. I also like that Biden returned the veterans' salutes. Some Presidents sometimes let that one slip. Don't get me wrong... a POTUS would have to return salutes 200 times a day if he did it every single time he was rendered honors. But for major ceremonies, veterans would notice it.

Someday, in the good Lord's own time, people will make war no more; and He will wipe every tear from every eye. .....Would that we could somehow hasten that day.

Always someone who comments and makes it all about himself and his displeasure due to a vapid ideology that lead to things like WW2 happening in the first place. How was Trumps salute? Oh yeah, he didn't go when he was CIC

He's saluting the veterans. And at least he showed up. Trump didn't go to the WW1 Centennial in 2018 because he was scared of rain.
