My cousin had a pet raccoon that she saved when it was a baby. They made a cage for him to stay in while they were gone but they're too smart to be locked up. "Bandit" broke out, got up on the kitchen counters and discovered the cupboard the peanut butter and marshmallows were in and helped himself--even getting the lid off the jar of peanut butter. He managed to knock over sacks of flour and sugar before leaving little peanut butter tracks all the way back to his cage. Note to self: raccoons make very messy pets.

I had pet raccoon for 6 months. The city took a bunch of trees down and he/she moved into my yard. He was old and ate bananas, bread and cat food. He would kiss my shoe and bathe in front of me. My cat loved him too.

Dog domestication, began passively, with wolves or their close cousins living in close proximity to humans cause they knew food was easy to come by if they stayed near. Later on, we began actively domesticating them, which included things like selective breeding, training some dogs for certain jobs and some dogs for others, etc. Cats meanwhile have had an entirely passive domestication, originating from roughly the start of human agriculture. With farming and the storing of surplus food, human settlements began attracting rodents, the main prey item for cats, and so naturally the cats followed. Unlike dogs, cats were already perfectly adapted for both a sedentary lifestyle and their jobs within human settlements, so we never gave cats as much attention when it came to domestication, which is why cats today don’t look much different than those around 10,000 - 5,000 years ago. The cat’s hunt the rodents, keep their numbers down, so our grain remained unspoiled, and the cats received settler, and on occasion free food from us. The only difference besides the physical, between a cat and a raccoon, is time. Cats have been living with humans for nearly 10,000 years (dogs even longer), raccoons not so much, but heh, with the rate urban expansion is going, give it another couple 1,000 years, we might see domesticated raccoons too 😏

That's nothing my mother has been feeding raccoons at her house for 2yrs. First it was the male he came up on porch and would look in the door. She started feeding him. Then last yr he came with female and she would stay in driveway and he would come on porch. This year its the whole family mom dad and 3 babies. They each have their own bowl they come every nite at 7pm they each get 2 hot dogs cooked 2 scrambled eggs cooked 2 pieces if toast 2 dog biscuits and chef boy r Dee ravioli cooked 3 pieces each. The male comes onto the porch and knocks on the door.

Well she volunteers at a shelter. So she has experience working with animals. More experience than your average person on the street who might think "Oh cute little raccoon! Oh I'll throw it this hamburger without knowing if that's good for it or not. Oh it likes the burger! We're friends now hey mr raccoon come here and I'll pick you up!" 30 minutes later a wild animal is being hunted down and beheaded to check for rabies while a stupid human gets a very large medical bill.
