I too watched the entire Watergate proceedings. I was 21 and resided in DC at the time. I once saw Halderman out on 16th street with his collar up, looking shifty. I wonder whether he was looking to score heroin for his boss. Lots of sidewalk dealers hung out there, just a few blocks from the WH.

I was a senior in college and glued to my TV during the hearings. Alexander Butterfield's testimony was crucial, but I believe the profile in courage belongs to John Dean. Where Haldeman, Erlichman, Mitchell, et al were a stone wall, Dean was a window on what went on in the Oval Office. Of course at the time he was excoriated by the Republicans, but when Butterfield made everyone aware of the taping system and the tapes were eventually released, we all learned that John Dean was telling the truth before Sam Ervin's committee.
@elenalatici9568 Жыл бұрын
I was 26, living in NYC, also glued to the television during the hearings. I agree with what you say about John Dean, but without Alex Butterfield we wouldn't have known about the tapes, the final nail in Nixon's coffin. The day that Nixon won the Republican nomination was the same day I got the news that younger brother of my childhood friend had been killed in Vietnam. I had loathed Nixon since the age of 13. That he of all people had survived the slaughter of our best leaders from '63 to '68 was a bitter lesson about the insanity of life. John Dean and Alex Butterfield reminded me that even in the midst of the darkest corruption I had witnessed there still existed people who were strong enough and moral enough to tell the truth. Watching Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony took me straight back to my studio apartment on 85th street when I had felt so relieved and vindicated to hear, finally, the whole truth. I bought her book yesterday and am half way through it. My gratitude for what she did, and continues to do, is immeasurable. This time, though, put the shameful, criminal blot on the country in prison.

Remember when Kamala and other Dems said they would refuse to get vaccinated when Trump was president? I was so worried about Cassidy after her testimony. Then she disappeared and I was afraid she was hiding from death threats. She probably was. But now she emerges with a book to inspire bravery in others. The best story to come out of this soulless period of our history.

50 years ago, I watched live on television as Alexander Butterfield disclosed to the Senate Watergate Committee the existence of the Oval Office recordings. Today, I learned from this video that Cassidy Hutchinson reached out to, and met with, Mr Butterfield for advice and support. It was very emotional for me to watch this video. All the best to you, Cassidy, and to you, Alexander.

OK - you never worked for welfare and approve of 7 million illegals brought into the US - but that's ok because no matter who that harms, you're just a Democrat believing that all Dems are nice? They don't even like homeless centers near their workplace. LOL

A real testament to the impact of example - good and bad - in our leaders. Thank goodness for those like Cassidy Hutchinson, Alex Butterfield, and others who had the courage to step forward at great personal risk, and tell the truth when our Country needed it the most. That is the true meaning of a National Treasure.

I've said it before, but here it is again, generations of parents need to share and teach their children about Cassidy Hutchinson's courage. . . Mr. Butterfield spoke of this, Cassidy is unique, her own person, a light being smothered by the darkness around her, and she found her way out. She stands as tall as any of the many heroes that have become Profiles of Courage. God bless you all! As a veteran, my service pales in comparison.

Cassidy, you’re the real deal. I’m so glad you had the opportunity to do this interview and I’m so glad you were able to develop a friendship with Alex. I was in tears watching this and I wasn’t even involved!! I’m with Lawrence; I would have been in tears too, being in his shoes. I don’t know if you will ever see this but I want you to know how meaningful this is for me, since I am old enough to remember the Watergate Hearings that were on TV every day. I remember his and others’ testimony about this, and how courageous they had to be to speak truth to power, and they were all older than you, as far as I remember. For you to be able to do this at your age with the enormous amount of pressure you had is really remarkable. I hope you take Alex’s words that Lawrence played for you to heart because from my view, he is absolutely right. And, my tears really flowed when he asked you for the favor, if 50 years later you have someone needing your help that you would be willing to help. I’m absolutely with you in hoping that you don’t have to because we ALL hope that you will not need to because we will have figured out how to keep it from happening again. Those of us who have been through this with Watergate didn’t think we would ever be in a situation like this either. I’m sorry that you had to be in the middle of this mess, and the fact that you have chosen to make something good come from it is a true test of your character and your integrity as a human being. I hope that you are doing all the self-care you need to while going through this, even in the aftermath and your scheduled interviews because these can still be stressful and you deserve to have the time to heal and recover from this experience. I wish you all the best and I look forward to seeing how you continue to change the world!! ❤
