During an autoland approach in a Boeing 747-400, the Flight Mode Annunciator (FMA) on the Primary Flight Display (PFD) will typically display the following modes and indications:
Roll Modes:
LOC: Indicates the localizer capture and tracking mode. The autopilot is engaged to maintain lateral alignment with the runway's extended centerline.
ROLLOUT: Indicates the autopilot is engaged to maintain lateral alignment during the rollout phase after touchdown.
Pitch Modes:
G/S: Indicates the glideslope capture and tracking mode. The autopilot is engaged to maintain vertical descent along the glideslope.
FLARE: Indicates the autopilot is engaged to initiate the flare maneuver just before touchdown, reducing the aircraft's descent rate for a smooth landing.
ROLLOUT: Indicates the autopilot is engaged to maintain the pitch attitude during the rollout phase after touchdown.
Autothrottle Mode:
SPD: Indicates the autothrottle is engaged to maintain a specific airspeed during the approach.
IDLE : Indicates the autothrottle is engagepd and will retard the thrust levers to the idle position at the appropriate time during the landing rollout.
Autopilot Engagement:
CMD (Command): Indicates that the autopilot is engaged and in control of the respective flight control surfaces.
LAND 3 at One thousand five hundred feet, the mode of the auto pilot will change from CMD to LAND 3
the Autopilot is ready for automatic landing under CAT 3 weather conditions

That was an outstanding narration of how the auto-pilot works upon landing. Captain, your explanations are clear and concise! Loved this landing at night with all the runway lights - very cool! Thanks for sharing part of your day, or should I say, night with us!! Great job executed by the Queen and her crew!! Cheers and blessings always, my dear friend!! 💕✈✈💕

Of all of the vids I've seen about commercial flights be it passenger or cargo, this is the 1st one I've seen where the flight crew used the "Auto-Land" system. The flight Crews always land the aircraft themselves. I enjoy watching their skill and talent in controlling these modern marvels of aircraft!!

@@AussienewsloverI think that sometimes, they also have to do an auto land test, so that’s probably why they did it with good visibility.

To this day it still amazes me the engineering and technology we have. Every time I look up at a plane flying I find it incredible how tons of steel can just lift and travel that high and so far. Whenever I talk about it everybody looks me like I'm crazy. I feel bad for them. they don't have the same sense of wonder I have.

It would be interesting to compare the variability of control inputs between human pilots and the autoland system during landings. To my eye the control inputs from autoland are somewhat lower in amplitude and frequency. I wonder how the autoland system reacts to situations where wind shear is present or a heavy crosswind is present?

Very cool. Amazing technology to be able to take in, analyze and respond to all the variables Mother Nature can throw at within reason I’m sure. Are there any situations when auto land is not used or is the computer still better able to respond than human a being in most cases? I wonder if the computer lands the plan better than a human pilot? Thanks for the great video.👍👍👏👏

Your explanation is clear and concise. Great presentation. Yet it inspires another question: What would be the steps needed from top of descent to set this up so that your entire approach is automatic, with the obvious exceptions of flaps, gear, and end of rollout?

How often do you have to perform this auto land to stay certified to do it? How long will the airline allow the plane to fly before fixing the thrust reverser system?

Curious why you decreased MCP speed to 158, then at minimums, you rolled it back to 160, then back to 158 over the threshold? Finessing the auto land for a more perfect landing or maybe keeping the engine wound up before touchdown?

@Captain Boeing, why does the Flap 30 indication change from green to magenta on the roll-out, then back to green?
@Acepilot1312
@Acepilot1312 Жыл бұрын
That is because the Boeing 747 has slat protection systems which are designed to prevent the thrust reversers in applying any excessive amount of air to the leading edge slats, which could cause them to get damaged. That is why, after landing, for as long as the thrust reversers are engaged, the slats retract in position and most likely come back up again after the reversers are stowed.
@kevindigo22
@kevindigo22 Жыл бұрын
@@Acepilot1312 Thank you for explaining this....I saw this on another 747 video with a wing shot of the landing and asked why the slats retracted but nobody answered. I wonder why they bother to extend them again after the reversers are stowed, they serve no purpose at that point.
