I don't think I could handle it. I still occasionally wake up sobbing, from nightmares about my childhood dog dying. I'm 34, now, and not a very emotional person - but that just kills me. Having to deal with that so soon after becoming attached... I think it might break me. I love dogs more than humans. But I know I couldn't handle losing a dog that soon after falling in love with it. 😭 I'm glad there are people like this, who are strong enough to give elderly dogs the end-of-life they deserve, because I couldn't.
@jamesmcivor3405 жыл бұрын
@@Acidfunkish sounds like a new adoption would be a good thing for you, I know where your coming from as I also get extremely attached to pets but just think from your dogs point of view - would they want you to be forever sad or would they want you to give another animal the great life you gave them? ✌️

I have taken a senior, neglected neighbourhood cat under my wing and do what I can for her whenever I can. She does seem to have a home but she is out far too much - in pouring rain, cold, heat, etc - without protection, food, water, so her owner(s), shame on them, are far from responsible. I would never leave my kitty like that, day in and day out. So, when I can, I look after her - drying her off if she's wet from the rain, holding her, chatting to her, feeding her lots of food (and kitty treats, which she loves even more!) and giving her water to drink. She is always so relieved to have someone looking out for her and making sure she is okay and she has THE loudest purr I've ever heard! I have no idea of her exact age but she is old - she has few teeth and has gum disease but otherwise seems fairly healthy.. I love her and will be devastated when she's not around anymore. Anyone who has a big heart and has the ability to do so should adopt a senior animal in need of a good home, regardless of how long they may have left to live. Even a few days, weeks, months with a senior animal - giving them love and care - is priceless and one of the best, most rewarding things anyone could ever do, for themselves and for the animal.
@woodstream61372 жыл бұрын
@@leicestergirl63 I moved into a house several years back and was feeding 2 outside cats. Both were skittish about being touched. The long hair cat always had green goop in his right eye. During the polar vortex a few years back, he couldn't walk more than 2 steps without falling over. I scooped him up and took him to the vet. He had been a former pet, not chipped, declawed x4, and only 2 tiny front teeth left but lived outside for years. He has idiopathic vestibular syndrome which causes him to lose his balance and walk with his head tilted when it flares up. Eye drops, ear drops, anti parasitic meds, antibiotics, anti vertigo, and anti nausea meds were all prescribed. He's much better now and the flare ups are rare. He still tries to get out whenever he can but is otherwise doing good. The other short hair cat is very friendly but not enough to be picked up. I bought a little house with a heat mat he stays in on the deck. He'll come inside until he hears a noise or the door starts to close and then he bolts. A few years back he was getting in fights so I had him neutered. That seemed to help if it was other cats. If it was raccoons, I think the dog has finally scared them of the property.

3 months ago I adopted a senior from the shelter. He seemed so sad and dejected. When he arrived to his new home with 2 younger dogs, he came to life and he’s acting like a puppy instead of an 8 year old

discdoggie, God Bless You, for giving a senior dog a forever home and family! I’m sure he will give you as much love as you give him! I don’t know why people think an 8yr. old dog is a senior dog? I think he’s in the prime of his life. Thank you again for giving him his forever home!🙏🏻

Awww, I owe the thanks to the shelter. I was having a depression/funk I couldn’t snap out of. Puppies are adorable of course (my 3 year old mutt was adopted from Atlantic county SPCA as an 11 week old puppy. Litter of 8 born in a Georgia shelter and they transferred half the litter north to ACSPCA.). It’s hard to resist puppies. In February before stuff got all crazy with virus I thought maybe rescuing a dog that NEEDS to be saved. No puppies, as adorable as they are, because they always get adopted. No dogs in foster homes because they were safe for now in foster and weren’t in immediate danger. So I saw Leon (formerly Justify) on Voorhees Animal Orphanage’s site, his case was being highlighted for Save a Senior Sunday. He was surrendered because his owner died. His adult children couldn’t be bothered to rehome him on their own, just dumped him off. 😡. He was adopted after about a month but sadly had to be returned because he and the cat did NOT get along. Thankfully I don’t have cats. So another 3 months in the shelter (for the record it is a lovely shelter with an amazing staff who truly care for their doggies and kitty cats) until I applied for him. I went to visit the first time, and he seemed so sad I said I need to bring him home today!!!!l”. But they do a thorough vet and reference check so it was another week and then I got a call to bring Bug and Jack for a meet and greet. Jack gets car sick and it’s an hour away so he couldn’t come. Meeting all household pets before approving am adopting is strict policy, but I showed up with Buggie anyway and pled my case. The meet and greet went “fine”. Bug was her usual exuberant self, and he was just so gentlemanly and well behaved. They did approve the adoption so he came home with us that afternoon. It was obvious from day one he was most definitely a loved and well cared for dog by his deceased owner. I just suspect he was an only dog because while he was FINE....wiggly his half tail stubby like crazy, letting them sniff him all over, he didn’t know how to “play” and trust me, Buggie tried constantly. I said “it’s cool dude. You can just live out your golden years lying around napping. It’s all good by me.” Rescuing a dog from a shelter situation is what MY depression needed. I felt good. I felt I “saved” him. Each day, though, he watched and he followed. “Oh, we’re supposed to whine and get excited when breakfast food bowls are being prepared? Okay, I can do that.” He’s not a barker, but jack is a schnauzer and anyone who knows anything about them knows they BARK. Thank god he hasn’t picked that habit up but he’ll whinny and moan instead. “Oh, we’re supposed to make noise when the vaccume cleaner is running? Got it.” He just follows them around, particularly Buggie, learning and copying day by day. He JUMPs for joy getting ready for daily morning and afternoon walks. They’re all gonna be bummed when quarantine is over and I’m called back to work. Now when Buggie “bows” at him in play posture, he responds. He loves being part of a pack. If they’re outside, he’s gotta be outside. If we’re outside and Bug hears the mail truck and screeches to go in so she can screech at him through the front bay window, Leon has to follow her too. “Oh, we make high pitches noises when the white truck comes? Good to know. Pretty sure I can do that.” He’s eager to learn and eager to please. Not just the humans who live here, but also the canines. My wish is that the second half of his life he feels as loved and happy and cherished as he did in the first half, as it’s clear he was his owner’s best pal. It must have been so confusing and heartbreaking to be dumped there, even though as far as shelters go it’s top notch. I never dreamed it would so quickly cure my depression. He is much loved. And acting like a goofy puppy PLEASE everyone, consider shelter or foster rescue of a “senior” dog. I know at first I worried about getting attached and then losing too soon. But he has a second chance at life and he’s cherishing every moment, and loving every day

So much to be said for adopting an older dog. We did, and “Lucky” was a wonderful dog who lived with us for many years, and helped raise a puppy who came to us as well. She was also mostly blind, and had inner ear damage from an old infection. But, she was full of life, and gave us so much joy and love. Give these sweet dogs a home. You will be forever glad you did.

These stories always bring tears to my eyes. We adopted a senior dog. He lived to be 17 he had in operable cancer. The cancer was surrounding his spine. With a raw diet and Essiac he healed. Within a year his cancer shrunk to the size of a white acre pea. He was 10, lived 7 wonderful years with us! He turned from a silent dog, to the most talkative dog we have ever had the pleasure to have!!! My son wanted his own dog. We had always had dogs. And he chose a senior. He chose the most wonderful dog! He was his shadow. Don’t forget about the elders. Give them a taste of true love and bonding! If but for a few months or years. Open your hearts, you will truly see, how appreciative and loving a lonely old soul can be... 🖖🏻

MzClementine, You’re absolutely right! My husband and I rescued an older cat. We were told that she was 13yrs. old. Her previous owner was going to have her put down. I couldn’t let that happen, so my husband and I took her in. She is the most loving cat I’ve ever had. She sleeps with my husband or myself. In the beginning she was shy and hide under our bed, but it wasn’t long when she finally opened up to our other cat and now she’s the queen of the castle. Our male cat was jealous in the beginning, but he’s now friends with her! They chase each other around the apartment and play. Sometime’s she gets a little too rough with him, that’s when we put a stop to their horseplay! I’m so happy that we gave her a forever home, because she deserves it!!! Every animal deserves a forever home with a loving family. Every animal I’ve ever had, has been rescued. I would never turn my back and leave an animal to live on the streets or in a home where they’re not being cared for. If and when my husband and I want another pet, we will go to a “no kill shelter” and adopt from them. If you’re looking for a pet, please go to a “no kill shelter” and find your pet there! You will be happy you did.

George B: What happened was clearly that Holden's former owner was a selfish, indifferent a**hole. Nobody who's decent and caring would neglect a pet, leaving them to suffer with ailments, etc, and then abandon them, in Holden's case with the vile words "old as dirt". That owner should rot in hell and god help any other animals they may have.

I couldn’t be any happier for Holden and his new family. I can’t imagine calling any dog “old as dirt”, as us dog lovers know, none of them are here with us long enough as it is. I’m there from the first day to the final day and even though those final days are excruciatingly heartbreaking to lose who we love, (I just lost my soul mate pup May 1st), who was almost 10 with no notice no warning. Passed in her sleep next to me. I’m still crying rivers over her, as her and I spent nearly every moment together most all of her years. I’m 58 and been thru hell with relationships and family but none of my loving dogs ever let me down and I try to think I never did them either. Just starting over with a 21 month rescued Golden Retriever who’s got a fabulous comedic and loving personality I think she knew I might need after losing the one before her. We can never replace them and I’d never try, but the love of a dog is like none other. I knew not only my mental health was suffering but my physical too, from the depression and grieving, of which there’s no expiration date on. I hope Holden lives happily and comfortably as long as possible. He knows he’s loved in his new forever home. ♥️

Oh, Nancy, my heart breaks for you. It's so hard to lose a fur baby. There are no words really to convey what that sadness feels like. And I know they can never be replaced but there are so many fur angels out there who desperately want love and to love. When my 15 year old cat Nelson passed, I adopted a little fella named Oscar. My kids were crying with sadness AND joy at the same time. I'm 55 and I can totally relate to what you said about horrible relationships. I love dogs and cats but for some reason cats started adopting me 30 years ago so that's what I've always had since. I believe without animals, life would be unbearable. I hope you and your new baby are doing well and are happy! Peace and love to you, friend.

Theresa 410 Thanks so much Theresa 410 There really are no words to express the pain of losing our Dear Pets. They are family for sure when family isn’t there or someone says they were “just a dog”, and to get another one if you want one so bad. None of mine were just dogs, like I’m sure your cats weren’t just cats. They have personalities that I’ll always cherish the memories of. Each one so different but each one so very special in their own way. I know what you mean about crying in sadness and Joy! I’ve felt guilty feeling joy at times with Star, who’s so very different as she should be, and how she makes me laugh at just how she smiles with her whole face! I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Her grin has been compared to Graucho Marx!! 😂 You can see her teeth on both sides of her mouth when she smiles so huge! 😁😁 I love her and I know we’ve bonded but the sadness of my Sophia is still very fresh in my mind and in my home. You can never get rid of all of a Golden’s fur! And I don’t think I want to! I have memories of her that I’ll always have like those before her too, but she was the one who got me through the hardest times of my life and for that she’s an angel 😇 in heaven or over the rainbow 🌈 bridge. Wherever they go is where I hope to be someday ✨🌟💫 💛❤️💚💙💝

The last guardian clearly did not deserve Holden. I'm glad he has Carole now.

I can’t believe you would abandon a family member like that. 😭 Edit: You guys, please know that I’m in no way judging the owner. My comment came from a place of being in the dog’s mind and nothing else. I know we all have complications and situations in our lives that cause things like this to happen. I really felt more like I was identifying with how the dog was feeling in that moment. Please give your animals a hug for me.

Sure they would. Wonder how grandma is doing?

Meaning they didn't accept him as part of the family either that or they had their own issue to why they abandon him.
@iangoldsworthy20565 жыл бұрын
They have good intentions to begin with but like everything else it's all down to money. They abandoned him because of the vet bills was just not affordable.
@lililili80675 жыл бұрын
Statia Manger it’s probably better they did abandon him because they aren’t capable to care for a living being.

Holden must the luckiest pooch on the planet • He gets rescued by a wonderful woman who has rescued and rehomed 500 others - then - • He has the perfect set up with his new mom and family a new home - own bed - own bowls - toys - all the food he wants and a big black lab brother
@blesscup1d4 жыл бұрын
Cami Forsell yeah but not really he had a really bad backstory where it’s obvious that his previous owner neglected him. I would say he got a lucky second chance but isn’t the luckiest dog in the world, but defiantly one of the affectionate ones.

So happy to see Holden bonded immediately with his new forever mom...Dodo never fails to produce tears of sadness into joy. Tales (and tails) of desperation into stories of hope and so much kindness. God bless every person or family that has reached out to foster and/or give these animals loving forever homes.🥰🥰🥰🥰💋💋💋😘😘😘

So happy to see it when senior dogs get adopted. I adopted my senior dog three years ago and she is amazing. Best dog I've ever had! She might not be around for a long time, but she has provided so much joy for me!
