Roth tank update Video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZnFg2tnbteobZo&t

The only time I've seen a Roth tank failure is when a contractor installed one outside without the roof assembly. Rain water likely entered and sat on top of the tank and ran into the secondary. Got freezing temps and cracked the tank. If installed correctly, they are great tanks.

Very informative, thanks. I had a conventional outdoor 275 gal. oil tank fail on me last year. Probably lost 80 - 100 gallons of fuel oil, before I realized that there was an issue. The oil seeped down to my drain tile, entered it, & travelled around my house & into the lake I live on. A 75 foot long x roughly 30 foot wide RAINBOW on the surface got my attention as well as that of NYDEC. $12K in cleanup costs (that my insurance company is haggling on), has convinced me to go with a Roth. I am looking at getting an outdoor Roth & the owner of my oil company will bring me the info tomorrow.

No problem, glad you found it useful. Sorry to hear about the mishap. Interesting story. Hopefully the insurance covers it

@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I had planned on framing it into an enclosure with Vinyl siding & a small hinged shed roof to hide it, & your info has convinced me that I should do so. Thanks again.

That was a darned good video that explains some of the drawbacks. Watching the Roth promotional videa you get the impression that conventional tanks fail within 10 years and Roth tanks are indestructible. I know conventional tanks last decades frequently and now I know Roth tanks are good but not perfect either. So what to do. I'll being installing a new tank this year and am going with the conventional tank installed in the basement. Double the cost for a Roth tank is just not worth it at this stage near as I can figure.

$3,565 is the cheapest I could get quoted for installing one of these things. They said the cost went up a grand since Covid. Tomorrow morning they’re coming and installing a Roth tank and pumping the existing oil from the old leaking steel tank. They’re going to have to cut up the old tank to get it out of the walk out basement

Basically , don't use one outside unless it's in a shed. The warranty is better than the steel tanks. It looks more modern too.

I would take this video with a grain of salt. For instance when installing separate tanks distance between tanks has more to do with proper spacing for factory supplied piping to connect tanks than filled tank expansion. Also tanks connected together are filled in parallel when using the proper installation procedures and fittings, not in series as shown in this video. It is correct in regards to potential issues when installed in a outside location. Suggest watching KZbin video "Hot and Cold: Roth Oil Tanks" to see a detailed overview of proper installation of multiple tanks.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow Жыл бұрын
These tanks are not installed in series. They're parallel with multiple ball valves on top so one tank gets filled at a time

Just bought my first house with a bad single walled tank outdoors. I couldn’t get oil delivered, and it was still cold in Rhode Island. I grabbed a Roth tank for 1200$, It’s far superior to the 700$ tank that was out there.

Overall do you recommend installing one of these tanks outdoor? Is worth buying the cover or are there alternative options?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow3 жыл бұрын
I think if it were me I would use a 12 gauge tank if it was going outdoors. but definitely get the hood cover if you're going to put one of these outdoors

Thank you for such an informative video. I hope you can answer my question. We had our heater serviced today. The tech said we need a new tank. It's the original tank from 1956 house build. He said " the metal gets thinner and won't pass inspection. My problem is that I'm a metal fabricator. To my it doesn't make sense that "metal gets thinner" from the inside out as he had put it. I don't get it, as fuel oil has an oil property to it. How does the metal get thinner? Is this legit, or is he scaring my wife into buying a new tank? I would really appreciate your input. Thank you!! Steve.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow3 жыл бұрын
No problem Steve I'm glad you found the video helpful. Yes it is true that on a steel tank they rust out from the inside. There is condensation that develops inside of your tank and sometimes water even gets in there from fuel delivery. It accumulates and sits on the bottom. And rusts them out from the inside. If it's not showing any signs of dampness on the bottom of it then you're still okay. I've never seen one just give out. Usually they get a tiny pinhole on the bottom and start getting damp. At that point you would smell the heating oil and know it's time to replace it for sure.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow3 жыл бұрын
Heating oil is lighter than water so the water sits on the bottom
@robfowler65752 жыл бұрын
Tanks accumulate sludge, sediment and microbes that feed on petroleum and deficate corrosive excreement- all very corrosive - that settles on the bottom. All steel oil tanks will eventually corrode and begin leaking. They develop corrosion holes on the inside. You can prime and paint and waterproof the outside of your tank and it doesn't matter. I am an environmental consultant who has been dealing with indoor fuel spills for 30-years - I recommend replacing the tank, putting a new one outside. Install a Roth or a double wall steel skid tank. Do not put tanks inside the house if possible - they aslo get overfilled and overpressurized during deliveries. A $20,000.00 indoor fuel spill is a small fuel spill.

True statement! I mean they do Rust Out overtime if you don't keep the water drained off the bottom but yes definitely tried-and-true
@jbun31462 жыл бұрын
You don’t want to be the person the “tried and true” single walled tanks fail on. I was. The house was built in 2017, and by the fall of 2021 there was a leak. Yes, it’s uncommon for tanks to fail so quickly. But it caused an emergency situation for us which would not have been the case with the Roth. It’s crazy to me that people still opt for a single walled tank to save a few bucks. And like the video and all the other commenters here have said, Roth tanks just don’t have the same failure rates as standard tanks that can rust.

I have a 275 gallon steel tank , kerosene use, there made from cold rolled steel, as long as there properly painted, and feed off the bottom, my tank is steel and outside, I looked inside the tank when it was empty and see no reason to replace it, it's not a pressure tank, but it is just a gravity oil tank just holding oil, the tanks of steel outside and feed off the top tube to the furnace are the tanks water sits in the bottom all winter and summer creating rust, ice on the bottom in winter, I've seen steel tanks as diesel tanks in fishing trawling vessels, around salt water, as long as they have a good paint job on them , never a problem.

He filled up the tank and healing for 26 gallon oil I got receipts for all which one gallons I ran out of oil at 2 a.m. it was 10 below zero while I was freezing my balls off because of their defect I called a manufacturer I told them I won an echo device they told me they didn't have one in stock I went to five different fuel gauges all because of their screw up

In other words the 12 gauge steel tanks are much stronger and longer lasting , makes sense, plastic bag inside a thin gage tin box, especially for outdoor use. I'll stick with the steel 275 gallon tank, I know they last, nobody knows how long these Roth bladder in a tin can will last , 🫣🤔
@NoNonsenseKnowHow3 ай бұрын
Yeah that pretty much sums it up, just make sure to get a double wall bottom. I've seen them right out prematurely if you end up with a lot of moisture in your heating oil. The Roth things have been around for quite some time now and have a very good track record. If it's going indoor I wouldn't even think twice about getting one. Outdoor... Go 12 gauge
