12:39 - I was going to offer that bit advice (hand on-and-off the other end of the pipe while vacuuming) in case you ever had a "next time," but you got it. Often the mini "shock waves" created will help knock any remaining crud loose. I can't see any reason NOT to use those quick-couplers on the vent line. Like you said, it's only a vapor path, and not under any pressure.

Thank you for this video! I live with my daughter, her husband & granddaughter, we need oil and the oil company won’t fill unless the whistle is fixed on the tank. Always good to be safe so when they come out to fill the tank they’re going to take a look at the whistle & see if it’s broken or just needs to be cleaned out. I wanted to know how it’s done & you sir, have shown exactly what I wanted to know! I grew up with a hammer in my hand, learned from my dad who was a handy man & craftsman by hobby! Thanks for the lesson! 😊

Thanks Steve for this video, You helped me save $300 from the oil company coming out and installing a new oil fill whistle. I did exactly what you did in this video and saved $200 bucks. I found a opened box whistle at Home Depot for $45 and the dresser coupling was $55.

My first thought was bug/bees under the vent cap... so, I must be learning something from all of these videos. I'm addicted to watching and my goal is to service my own boiler from soup to nuts. So far, I have learned the most from SL's videos. I'd hire him to do my boiler, but I think I'm just a tad too far from him... and Molly might not like to drive so far.

Yeah, I`ve heard about stupid stuff like that. Customer gets rid of oil furnace goes to gas, but the gas system installer doesn`t remove the oil fill pipes, and in the fall, along comes Ollie the oil man, plunks the filler hose into the pipe and floods the basement with heating oil. In one case in upstate NY, the house ended up being condemned. All because one little stupid mistake led to a big stupid mistake.

For those who want to know how to test a vent alarm instead of just changing it you can get a gallo gun and send a co2 charge down the fill or the exhaust of your vacuum down the fill

@jeremybishop98482 жыл бұрын
Any oil delivery man worth his weight would unscrew/remove the vent cap and clean it at EVERY delivery. We always leave them hand tight and unscrew/check them during delivery. The first delivery of the season, we run into alot of spider nests and mud wasp nests. it only takes a few seconds to check and clear it, and we are just standing there staring at the ground for 3 minutes anyway. Also, you can see the spilled oil on the driveway, which is caused by the angled scully fittings with no riser. When you unhook the scully it spills everywhere. The cure for that is to remove that angled scully fitting and put a 90 and a 4" nipple on there and stick the scully fitting back on.
@forcetenheatingfueloil34182 жыл бұрын
This is the correct way. All of our drivers, if they have a blocked or partially blocked vent remove the cap and see if its blocked right there outside. If it is they can clear it easily. And when its mostly cleared if can be cleared further while delivering. If its blocked or partially blocked and isn't outside then we stop delivering and inform the customer they can't get fuel until we fix the problem. If we have to cut the vent pipe in the basement we automatically put a new vent on. If your gonna cut the pipes then better to start new again. And use a proper coupling to put the pipes back together with two nipples. This way if a company ever comes and overfills the tank - ALL of the spill is outside. A tank in the basement should be sealed so nothing leaks inside even with an overfill.

A driver during a delivery had a blocked vent. The screen that is supposed to be in the vent cap probably rusted closed. So the driver took the cap off and knocked out the vent and put the cap back on. After that the vent is open and bugs put all kinds of crap in there as well as spiders. Happens a lot of time

Wait a second, American oil tanks have no real sensor for the tank? Our tanks have an electrical sensor that is connected to the pump of the oil truck and it shuts the pump up automatically when the tank is full. Nothing new, been like that for 60 years or so. It is a simple thermistor that changes resistance once it is submerged in oil and cools. Pretty much failproof and simple. If the thermistor is open the pump does not even start.

The whistle works good enough if the oil man is paying attention. Pretty brilliant design that allows you to know that you're filling a tank and when it's full, all for a cheap, reliable whistle. Those stories of oil men filling old lines with no tank and flooding the basement won't happen if he wasn't on his iPod and knew to listen for that whistle.
