A little bit of additional info: bore scoring tends to start at the bottom of the cylinder. Just sticking a bore scope into the spark plug hole will not show how the bottom half of the cylinder wall looks like. You have to drop the oil pan and check the walls from the inside while the piston is at TDC

I have a 2007 Porsche 987 Cayman S with currently 407,000 mile on the odo...Purchased from Brumos with 42k on the odo. Original engine, NO IMS issues... Headers, GT3 Manifold, Flashed the chip 365BHP... Bilstein R 9 shocks, Machined short throw shifter, light weight flywheel... This car is ALL of THAT! The magic of changing the oil and filter with Mobil ONE or other Full Synthetic every 5-6,000 miles is the ticket... It's a "sleeper" for the street... 0-60 about 4 flat... So do not hesitate to buy a pre-owned 987 even with 100k on it... Really so long as the records are good... You'll have minimal issues... Fuel oil separator, coolant flush annually... New sport clutch at 350k. GREAT CAR! Kind of rare as most are turned into race cars...

Great video on these cars. My 987 dropped the oil out of the gearbox yesterday..... i think I have caught it before any major damage, but will have to wait and see. Definitely one bearing is gone as I heard that making noise. Got to my destination and noticed a few oil spots and had a look under the car. Whole underside was wet with oil and dripping. One tow truck later I have the car back at home.

Really enjoyed this article & your helpful tips. Had a 986 Boxster from new 2001-04 then 997 Gen 1 from new 11/2004- 9/2016. Both were used as weekend/occasional use cars so know exactly what you mean about rust on the inner face of brakes. Likewise the awful design of the front intakes allowing damage to the condensers which still persist on the 992. Why is it only the GT cars that have mesh guards as standard. Sadly my 997 being an early car had the carry over IMS from the 996 engine. With only doing about 4.5k miles a year I always had that nagging worry about sudden catastrophic engine failure. They say if the IMS hasn't failed by 60k its probably never going to.

My 997 had an engine mount failure 2 days ago :( such a sorry sight to see the drivers side of the engine hanging down so low, hoping the damage to other components is minimal, it occured during hard acceleration on a damp surface and the wheel hopped, not sure if this is common amongst 911s...when it wheel hops, the sound is quite scary. A point to be noted to anyone looking to buy a 997...get those engine mounts replaced, or check when they were last changed.

On my Boxster the front hood release solenoid failed in a really strange way. You could open the hood in the morning. If you drove the car for a while the solenoid would get heat soaked and no longer activate. You could pull the switch all day. Press the release on the key and nothing would happen. I discovered that letting the car sit over night would allow the solenoid to cool and you could open the frunk again. There is a mechanical release cable in a wheel well. Or there should be. Mine was missing. Nothing the generous application of cash can't fix.

Re Bore Scoring, if a seller is awkward about you having a boroscope check its probably because he/she is hiding something. A boroscope isn't conclusive as the initial scoring is just as like likely to start at the bottom of the bore so may be obscured by the piston. And when you have bought a car a) dont rev hard when cold b) dont rev hard when very hot (ie dont do the traffic light grands prix after standing still for a couple of minutes c) dont labour the engine & rely on low down torque, keep the revs up a bit to give the engine some oil supply d) drive the car, gently, as soon as started -dont leave at idle for ages on the drive with cold oil

bore scoring is the #1 engine killer per LN Engineering whom designed the most well regarded and sold IMS upgrade replacement and even its permanent solution successor. Boxster small engines 2.7 no incidents as well as earlier Boxster S 3.2, but every motor at 3.4 L to 3.8 L is at risk. $20k rebuilt and its quite the improved motor, but yikes. Risk I take with my 99 911 but off the list for 06 Boxster 2.7. Lowest risk model? 2009 -2011 Boxster/Cayman and then 911. Someday...
