I had a bad experience with them as well. I bought a Hermes scarf for about $250 ( retail was about twice that). The scarf was listed as “pristine” condition with box (the box added about $40 to the cost). I received my scarf, thrown into a beat up cardboard box, no packing material, no tissue paper and no Hermes box! To add insult to injury, the scarf had small stains on it as well. It was listed as final sale, but I was able to get my money back because the item was not as listed. Luckily, I also document everything and had screen shots of the listing and pics of what I received. Never again.

Always get the credit company involved immediately....this kind of thing has happened to me and I always tell the vendor I am contacting the credit card company NOW!...they usually relent and agree to give me a full refund...I still call the credit card company and contest the charges...they take it off the statement and you do not have to pay until the matter is straightened out...

Wow, your experience was EVERYTHING the RR claims to protect you against. I was just considering something they have and now I absolutely will not have ANYTHING to do with them. I am sorry you had to go through this, and very thankful for you posting your experience. I actually know someone who purchased a Chanel item from them and I thought it was a fake, but she was happy and too late to return, so I kept my mouth shut, thinking that I had to be wrong. Now I wonder and will choose not to purchase from them.

I totally understand your feeling worrying if your friend may have gotten a fake Chanel bag. This may not help-but I was at the Tyson’s Corner (near D.C) a few months ago and while they had so many bags for over $12,000, I didn’t see the quality I was used to seeing 10 years ago. So hopefully your friend’s bag is real.

Thank you so much for sharing this story😞……I am a decorator -designer and I have many clients with lux bag stories…..sofar their experience with the RR is ok, but….my clients only purchase vintage-esp. LV under $400 and they know their vintage bags…however all agree with you, their packaging is very poor for a luxury’ reseller. A few KZbinrs [Caleb Snell actually purchased a Hermes Kelly bag from them]…they seem to have soooooo much inventory always?!….A client of mine is a professor and she said,….it’s really scary how the real items are looking fake and the fakes are now looking real, and listen to this, she purchased a bag from a retail store and it was fake! …someone either returned a fake or what but she is thankful she bought her bags in the 1990’s2000’s and said she’s done now….wow……Thanks again 🙏🏼

TRR has more inventory than they can sell which is the kiss of death in retail and the reason why their return policies have gotten so BAD. This was also probably a “plan” from their Executives as part of their restructuring because their financially in the hole. But turning into all out crooks, theft, etc.,. We wouldn’t take this kind of behavior from normal retailers in brick and mortar stores. I think there needs to be a class action lawsuit against these companies and their practices because their not the only ones.

Many many many years ago I heard that the “Real Real” sells fake items, heard it and saw it in videos filmed by Resellers who bought “mystery boxes” from that company and because they are KZbinrs they made “unboxing videos”. I am glad I watched their videos long time ago and I learned not to buy anything from The Real Real. Thanks for your video.

Wow! They actually used packing paper with your shipment. I'm shocked. I have bought many luxury bags from TRR and they never include any packing materials beyond their dust bag. I started paying for the $5 gift box to give the purse it's best chance of traveling safely.

You said your authentication company said they “couldn’t authenticate it.” That doesn’t mean it’s “fake.” It means they cannot authenticate the bag for whatever reason. They might not know enough about the bag to be able to.

Thank you so much for making this video. I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience. Thankfully you had a full refund in the end. I've often browsed on the Real Real but have always hesitated. I tend to wait until something bad happens with me to cut off business with a company. But your video is a deal-breaker for the Real Real. Thank you for your video! I am certain your video came up in the algorithm because I have recently had a horrible experience with the RealReal. I am still going back n forth on an LV that was missing the strap. Even though it was supposed to. They flat out refused to take it back or even make a concession. There customer service is horrendous. I will never ever use them again....EVER. If you are persistent about speaking yo a supervisor they will disconnect the call. Its been a month without any resolve. Im moving to legal action.

I know! I thought it was a cute purse but, I thought the top was oddly stiff. I don’t think they gave me exact info on why or what they saw or didn’t see. The original message was simple: something about unable to authenticate, easy to replicate. So that’s when I reached out and I think they had issues with the hardware markings. There’s not a whole lot to the purse really. So I’m not sure what they look for?🤔

I bought a wedding dress from Poshmark and paid for authentication. It was legit but in horrible condition. The condition was not disclosed by the seller. There is no way to leave a negative review for a seller. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I'll never buy from Poshmark again.

Once that bag is sold I’m done with them. I feel like they take too much commission from your sales and you don’t get your money’s worth from what you sent them. So sad that the only option consumers have is to file a claim immediately for a stop payment. By contacting them and giving them a heads up you were giving them the benefit of the doubt instead of automatically filing a fraud claim. They essentially punished you for doing THEIR supposed ‘job’ AND showing them grace.

I've had my fair share of bad experiences with their customer service via the phone and email. I thankfully never purchased, I mean, got scammed from them.

The day it showed shipped Poshmark emailed me and said the purse turned out to not be authentic and the shipment had been canceled and my account had been refunded. I bought a Givenchy bag from them several years ago. It looked okay in the photos (which I think are sketchy at best). Described as great condition with a few light scuffs. When I got the bag, it literally had two large holes in the leather and the pockets were full of human hair and I mean FULL. They would not respond to me. I had to file a claim with PayPal. Got a refund, but vowed I would never deal with them again. EVER.

GREAT video. Your experience with TRR is not an anomaly. It's typical of how they do business (I was a VIP Consigner with them for 8 years). I had virtually the EXACT experiences w/TRR on THREE separate occasions, with a slight twist. I attempted to RE-CONSIGN items I had purchased FROM TRR the previous year - and TRR actually REJECTED the items, claiming that they were Fake...... (I also posted a full 'warning' video about TRR disreputable practices, a few months ago). Most recently - I had purchased a Bottega chain cassette bag from TRR March 2022, then decided to RE-Consign it with them 1 yr later (March 2023). I received notification that the bag "was NOT authentic." I sent them a screenshot from my Account History proving that I had purchased the bag FROM their site the previous year, and demanded a full refund for selling me a fake bag (for $4k, btw). SAME run-around experience as you - it took 2 months, multiple emails before they QUIETLY refunded me without a word. SAME experience with (2) Chanel belts. Purchased from TRR, tried to RE-Consign, TRR rejects them as "fake." Again, I was able to send them proof that they were TRR purchases, and demanded a full refund OR consign the items. NEVER, EVER, EVER again will I Work with TRR in any capacity. Oh - and they LOST an Alaia bag that I sent in for consignment. Still dealing with that. They are a disreputable company. When experiences likes ours are the norm - it's not by mistake. It's purposeful. Thank you for speaking out - it's important. ;-)

Exactly (now 146k+ people). The damage TRR did to their goodwill... for what, the transaction fees of a single item? And the resourcing costs of their month of slow and terrible customer service was probably more than the profit on that purse as well. I can understand not taking returns just because someone changed their mind on a final sale (too many people would buy something for an occasion and then return it), but this was a case of a reputable third-party authenticator saying it was a fake. If the customer has that information, hands down simply for reputational reasons TRR should take something back: no-hassle, speedy full refund even on a final sale item.

SO Tired rgat when I got a fake bag from TRE In 2015, I just gave UT away and told the person it was a fake and I just got another Fendi mini bag from ebay. It's adorable but obviously a fake. So stiff. DID I return it? Too tired It sits in my 800+ bag collection. I am thinking of creating a shelf of fakes that I now have...at least 30. Maybe more. I buy preloved ONLY from sellers in Japan on eBay. As a fan of LV vintage, i find fantastic deals. Ill pay around 250 USD give or take a few. Then, I send the bags to LV repair for vachetta and hardware replacement. Even with the price of replacement for vachetta and hardware, it’s still a great price.

This happened to me a few weeks ago! The RealReal sent me a fake Tory Burch. The boutique confirmed it, but TRR refused to admit they sold a counterfeit. Eventually I did get my money back, but it was a hassle.

Thanks to share your experience. I truly hope this helps many others. My sister purchased an LV bag from the Real Real and I have no doubts it’s counterfeit. I have the same bag, smaller version purchased in an LV store so very familiar with the bag. Also studied which colors and leather types. LV never released the color she bought from RR. She was so excited and it was a purchase she planed for and budgeted for some time. I didn’t have the heart to tell her. She was very happy. My husband also suggested to leave it at ‘ignorance is bliss’. In her part of the US, small town USA, no one will know either. So we let it be. I took this lesson and will not purchase anything from the Real Real. If counterfeits are slipping through to shoppers something is seriously wrong with their process and business model to authenticate items.

No, you should tell her. What if she decides to sell it later? I’d be a little sly and say something like… I get all my bags authenticated by a third party if I buy in the resell market. That way you suggest it without being the one to give her the news directly.

Your story rings true for me. A couple of years I purchased a pre-loved David Yurman bracelet on eBay. Once I received, I took to my trusted jeweler and...shocking...a fake bracelet. Took me a month or so to sort things out, but eBay contacted the seller and he refunded me 100% of my money and was then taken down by eBay. Definitely shying away from these sites. Thx for sharing.

Lots of fake Tiffany jewelry too. Tiffany & Co sued Ebay about counterfeit goods being sold as authentic Tiffany. Unfortunately they didn’t win the lawsuit. Buyers beware!

I’ve never liked the real real since my experience with them in 2018. I visited the store in LA with my mom. They ignored us for over 30 minutes and there were like 2 people in the store. They pretended to be too busy to assist us so we took our business to Rodeo Drive and spent our time and money there.

When I first heard about The Real Real it was when they first started business, I bought a monogrammed Celine bag. It stunk high heavens and I contacted them and they reduced the price. It turned out that it was an original bag as I took it to the store years later and it was a unique design, BUT I added coffee beans (I love coffee) and two years afterwards the smell went away. I was lucky but I heard many negative stories afterwards. No more preloved for me after this podcast. Thank you very much.

They have the worst customer service and they are the masters at gaslighting. They have sent me the wrong stuff multiple times. One time they sent me 17 boxes that were not mine that took up half of my garage that I wasn’t able to park in my garage. it would require probably seven trips for me to bring all of those back to UPS because these were very large boxes. I asked them to send someone to pick it up and every time someone would come pick it up they would only have one label so they only picked up one package each time. This occurred maybe 3 to 4 times until finally after much complaining and emailing back-and-forth and much like you had to experience, they sent someone to pick up all of the boxes. That was probably about three months later. I think their employees are stoned. I feel you girl! I’m so sorry that you experienced that

I'm just curious. What was in the 17 boxes delivered to you that were not yours, and were you charged for those items sent to you? I have been told, (but have not checked to see if this is 100% true or not) that you are not responsible for items sent (and delivered) to you by mistake. Maybe not legally responsible, but in my humble opinion, morally responsible anyway. ;-)

Luckily, they did not charge me for the boxes. I did not look into the boxes intentionally, one of them broke open, and it appears that it’s a bunch of clothes that this other seller was trying to send them, but the real real must’ve rejected them and we’re sending them back.

I identify definitely. I was sold a fake YSL and Gucci by a second party reputable retailer. I had to fight to get my refund tooth and nail, but eventually I did by having two separate authenticators, confirming the fact that they were fake. Oh I need to add that I had to report them to the Better Business Bureau and they helped a lot.

The customer service is horrible. It used to be real people that were local. We have to be careful with all resellers I had an experience similar to yours with FP some years ago. The difference was they immediately did the right thing with no issues. That is where TRR went wrong. That was terrible. They should have just given you your money back and included a store credit for good measure. I 100% agree they need to accept returns and not offer this insurance crap. Good for you for fighting and winning.

This is happening with all luxury resale sites. Another problem Ive heard from many customers is boxes arriving empty. But no refund being issued even with proof. There’s no way these supposed “authenticators” could have brand knowledge of such a wide range of products. It would take 20+ years to know how to authenticate all the brands they sell. On top of that to be able to differentiate between seasons when companies often change their heat stamps and logos. Or vintage vs contemporary products. It’s such a vast amount of experience and knowledge an authenticator of that magnitude would need to have. It’s irresponsible of them to say they’re able to authenticate in house. They should send it to a specialist in authentication instead.

Sorry this happened and thanks for the warning. I bought a designer diamond ring from TRR and within a year it literally split in half and could not be repaired. I believe it had been repaired before and then sold on TRR. I also bought a Hermes scarf that, when I received it, still smelled of the previous owner's perfume! Those two things put me off enough that I no longer shop there.

Then I sent them a new Burberry purple plaid shirt! It was set up on their website for a while and I would check them out periodically! One day I saw that the shirt had been taken off the site and upon inquiry they said they would look into it! Since I had the item number and a screenshot of the shirt I kept asking them: what happened to my shirt! Eventually they stopped answering my emails! I had nowhere to turn to and complain! So that was the end of my $340 Burberry shirt! Yes, I will never do business with them either! Unfortunately I don’t have a public platform to inform people about them!😮😖😖😖

Thank you for posting this. I have never purchased from the Real Real but thought they were reputable. I guess not. A reputable company would not have treated you the way they did. I'm sorry this happened to you. FYI, next time contact your credit card company right away and tell them there is a dispute with a product. They will not pay them until it is resolved. They will also handle the dispute if you wish. Years ago I bought a diamond ring and immediately had it appraised. It was not appraised to be the quality the seller claimed. We contacted our credit card company and they went to bat for us and we got a refund. The Real Real should have immediately refunded you if you were not happy.

I bought a pair of fake red bottoms from the real real in 2018. It was a final sale. I never authenticated it at the time but it was so obviously fake. I was shocked. Unfortunately I never thought of filing with my credit card due to it being a final sale. When I finally shared what happened with my daughter she had it authenticated and of course it was fake. She found out online that fakes were very common with the real real. It’s still in my closet as a reminder for me to NEVER buy from the real real again.

I can relate I had a similar experience however not with Real Real. Several years ago I purchased a LV purse that had been cleaned inside with a strong chemical and not disclosed in the listing. Apparently, a huge ink stain inside the bag bled through and ruined the leather, the smell from this cleaning chemical that was used to get ink out was strong and sickening. I immediately requested a refund and was told to return it to the address listed by the sender and a refund would be issued. The purse was returned to me a month later I never received the refund because the sender had a fake return address listed on the box. I was stuck with this horrible smelling ink ruined bag and this deceptive individual that sold it to me took his listing down. Smells can’t be proven in pictures, he denied cleaning it and called me a liar. I got stuck with this purse and was denied a refund …I’m still upset.

Also, their return policies changed to TRASH 🗑 trying to stick consumers with products. Disgusting on 10 their practices. People need to start suing them.
