*NB. In the video - I say "most" sharks are ram ventilators, however "most" was the wrong choice of word! There are overwhelmingly more sharks that breath via buccal pumping, than ram ventilation. Although I would comfortably say sharks definitely can't and don't stay still midwater like the meg is doing here!

Even though sharks will patrol around injured prey, I’m not sure how likely it would be that it would keep trying at it for 2 days. There was a whale carcass there but maybe the shark felt it’s food was threatened. I can’t be sure but I already know it wasn’t a terrible movie. Realistic? Heck no but good nonetheless.

Not surprised Mr. Statham was treading water so well. If I recall correctly, he was trained for the Olympics for swimming. Don't know if he ever made it, but he was trained to that level. I think he took this role just to show off swimmy skills, to be honest.

Video starts: "Hang on, how many gill slits has he got? (counts them) He's got EIGHT gill slits!" Me: I see you noticed they gave him more gill slits than regular sharks have. In all seriousness, though, they made that decision consciously, because they were trying to figure out how he'd be able to get enough oxygen down there in the deep ocean, and the best way they figured was to give it more gill slits.

@@katehalasz5069 well, the comment is directed towards someone who acts like because we don't have actual material of the actual megalodon "how can you know!?!?!", which is...wrong really. For the actual animal it's completely unreasonable to make that assumption. Now for the fictitious abyssal megalodon, its more reasonable cause those pressures could have caused it. The reason for the extra gill slits is straight out of the book and was an adaptation by the shark for living in the deep sea trench. In the book, the shark even had other adaptations like being bioluminescent pale albinos, but that was excluded from the film. The movie is based on a book and it looks like much of the book material is going to end up in the sequel.

What an excellent question, and to be completely truthful I don't have an exact answer for you! Shark gills are likely an evolutionary by-product from the first gnathostome (jawed) fish - a very long time ago! In regards to six and seven gill sharks, the reasoning behind their extra gills is still puzzling scientists to this day. It's most likely just an interesting quirk of evolutionary history. The Hexanchiformes (six & seven gills + others) are known to be one of the most primitive and early forms of shark.

9:40 I've heard (and that's the extent of my sources so please correct me if I'm wrong, I'd love to learn if it's true or not) that as long as you maintain eye contact with sharks, they won't attack you because they like to take their prey by surprise. It has been demonstrated in I think a Discovery episode a few years ago (although I'm probably wrong on the series ^^') but all that was shown was divers being circled by sharks and the divers making and keeping eye contact with the sharks that seemed to swim towards them, followed by the sharks turning away.

I enjoyed this movie, though I recommend you check out the book it adapts Steve Alten's Meg because the movie tones down the craziness of the book from the megalodons being bioluminescent ablinos, to a megalodon winning a fight against the USS Nautilus, and Stathom's character literally cutting the heart out of one (in the original book and not in the author's most recent rewrite of it). And I haven't even mentioned the insanity of the sequel books... yeah I used to be a big fan of the books but the author's been stretching things kind of thin with them over last couple years.

I saw of clip where they said they tried to design the shark specifically to "not look like any existing shark" so the gill thing might have been intentional. I think there were a few ref to Jaws too but I can't recall what they were XD Oh, there's a movie called "Shark Night" that has a rare appearance of Cookie Cutter Sharks.

Sharks may have several weak points, but in a human attack scenario it’s recommended you go for the gills. The snout requires a hard punch to stun them and have you ever tried punching underwater? Pretty impossible. Hitting and clawing the gills however is easy (plus doesn’t put your hand at risk of getting bitten off like a snout punch). Striking the gills and clawing at them is like squeezing an attackers lungs, and it carries the highest chance they’ll release you.
@SHARKBYTES
@SHARKBYTES 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely, if getting attacked by a shark I would always recommend to hit the gills/eyes. Best avoiding the pointy end at the front!

I could be wrong, but wasn't there some study that in areas with shark finning was done, it was noticed that the living shark population left or was repelled. I heard about this like 5 years ago, so I'm not sure if this was disproved or not, but if it is true, wouldn't the sharks swim away from the Meg carcass?
