That is exactly why Schumer wants so desperately to avoid this trial, so desperately that he is willing to subvert his duty to the people by refusing to uphold his obligations to the constitutional functioning of the Senate. Many Democrat Senators are up for re-election in this cycle and every voter is going to witness them refuse to impeach Mayorkas despite what will be seen by the voters as overwhelming evidence of his guilt. It will not matter what justification they offer for that refusal, they would claim his behaviour does not meet the standard of “high crimes and misdemeanours” and perhaps it does not but that isn’t how the common citizen will perceive it. Despite the everlasting damage it will do to the future functioning of the Senate, Schumer sees this refusal as preferable to the loss of some of those seats.

With title 42 suspending enforcement many immigrants re-crossed multiple times causing apprehension numbers to be inflated. The current rate of multiple returns was about 40% of border crossers. We had a 11 year decline in southern border crossing to the lowest point in 50 years prior to Trump and his polices. By 2019 Trumps policies doubled the number of people crossing the southern border to 977,000. He only saw a reduction for the first 9 months of 2020 due to covid, before it went back to a 20 year monthly high in October of 2020. It has remained a 20 year high and increasing ever since under Trumps failed policies and Title 42.

The more I think about all of the stuff that is going on, the more it makes me really sad for all the people that have no choice but to live here and do the best they can to survive day after day .
