When the Soviet Union collapsed and Russia was being run by Boris Yeltsin in the early 90s, there was discussion at that point, why does NATO still exist. I can only surmise that the military industrial complex rallied and kept NATO in existence. The expansion of NATO is another chapter that needs far more attention. If the U.S. did promise the USSR that NATO would not expand eastward after the reunification of Germany in 1989 and 1990, then why did NATO expand?
