After nine regular season events, the Lexus WSL Finals brings the top 5 men and top 5 women in professional surfing to Lower Trestles for a one-day, winner-take-all, showdown for the coveted title of World Champion. From Pipeline and Portugal to Teahupo’o and Cloudbreak, it has been a hard fought season for the world’s best surfers. Ten surfers enter, and only two will emerge as Champions and add their name to the legacy of the sport.
This September, current world No. 1 John John Florence will be making his first appearance at Lower Trestles as a World Title contender. Caitlin Simmers, in only her sophomore season as a CT athlete, will be making her second run at a World Title while also donning the Yellow Leader Jersey. Meanwhile, world No. 2 and defending champion Caroline Marks will be back in front of her home crowd to defend her World Title.
Tour veterans will battle a new generation of talent for the World Title this September at Lower Trestles. History will be made, and legacies will be defined.

Italo's switch surfing at @2:02:40 was absolutely insane, literally shredded a right better than most on their prefferred stance. I loved his hustle and energy all event

Italo surfed amazing the whole event, so consistent. JJF absolutely deserved the win though. The Judges made some errors throughout the contest, but the two surfers that won were ultimately the two surfers that absolutely deserved it. Great to see womens surfing elevated year after year.

Totally agree....why as a kid I moved away from judging sports. They have peoples lives in their hands! Hopefully improves & can surf the wave vs 1 maneuver. Speed, power, flow?

6:13:50 JJF first wave was better than that one, but they gave this +8 because that was what he needed. They even waited to see if JJF was going to get another wave or Ferreira was going to use his priority. When they saw Ferreira took his priority, they knew they had to give +8 to JJF win.(I like JJF, I even think that he was the real champion of this year, I don't like this finals format because penalize who was the best in the entire year. But this can't be a excuse to favor one or another)

That lay back by JJ was mental and I agree with Simmers it is hard to describe how well she surfed this year. i love Italo’s child like energy, i think I he didnt have to surf that many heats before the heat with John, I think JJF wont have a chance… as for me he is better in small wave than JJf but also so happy for JJf

@@krishtayable yes, I agree. The final heat should've been 1 or 2 days after to give the them time to rest. If you watch this video, Ferreira is surfing from its hour 0 till hour 7.

Well see that's the problem - Lower Trestles is a very particular type of wave (as is Pipe), to which some competitors are better suited than others. This gives an undue advantage to surfers like Italo who perform best in smaller, cleaner conditions, while disadvantaging surfers like Jack who do best in larger waves. If you just use the points tally, then it means that all the spots - with all the types of waves - are weighted equally in deciding who wins.

Totally awesome finals day today! With so much on the line, the surfers delivered...and the stoke was off the charts! Both winners are Awesome Champions who brought their best when it counted the most. The runner-ups were also amazing!

Well, he didnt beat the top 3 surfers in the world... He beat nr 2, nr 3, and nr 4...he lost two times in a row to the best surfer of the year. Let me break that down for you. JJF just beat a Surfer, that beat Nr 2, 3, and 4 in a row, in both heats. Thats pretty impressive

John John also was number 1 in the world while Italo was number 5, meaning in the old format John is World Champ and Italo finishes number 5. Italo was incredible all day but don't go throwing weird shade.... the reason he had to beat all these people to have a chance is because he finished in 5th for the season, he was lucky to have the opportunity to be out there and he almost fully capitalized.

@@Bambeakz hmm, on a normal finals day he surfs 3 heats as well... He is one of the fittest athlets of the world, going for a worldtitle plus he is runnig on about 15 redbulls... You really think he lost because he got tired? The world champion wasnt decided in one day, it was in a whole year buddy. Jjf smoked everyone, he was 12000 points ahead of italo. You are right, the contest is stupid, jjf should have not been in the position to claim his worldtitle like that. But you know what, he steped up and smoked italo in two high pressure heats as well. What a world champ. Lets just acknowledg that. And you got a proplem with the jury as well? Yep, judging in that first heat was all over the place. Italos first wave should have not been that high, first mistake. Jjf first wave was better then a 7,17. I think there they figured out what on a wave should be done and how you should surf for a world title. Real surfing, not one maneuver. Progressive, power and flow. Thats what jjf did. Mistake free and beautiful. Italo surfed amazing the whole day, but one air to be a worldchampion... Come on. That air of him and combo it up wit a couple strong hits on his backhand? That would have been sick! But that was not enough. For me, real and beautiful surfing one that day. And jjf got his well deserved 3 world title. What a year

Last year at J Bay JJF lost his ability to surf in the finals at all because they gave Conor O'Leary the score he needed on a wave that definitely wasn't the score.... JJF has been on the losing side of a bad score, so your argument honestly makes no sense bud. Have some honor and dignity
