Thank you so much Zoe! Living in a small city east of the bay area has made me really think about more growth opportunities in my future a lot, and that mostly consists of thinking about the career I want to pursue and that is being a fashion designer. Thanks to you, learning about this is so much help to me! Thank you so so much for these in-depth lessons you provide for FREE! These mean a lot

I am studying my diploma of fashion design online (through an actual Australian institute here but I’m pregnant so online is easier) and I just don’t know what I would do without your videos. I wish you could lecture at my school! Because it’s online lectures I’m sure you could but I guess it depends on my school. They are a pretty cool smaller school with very very small class sizes. They’ve been around since about 2015. As they saw a need for online fashion design diploma and the advanced diploma because so much of Australia is spread out and rural so some people couldn’t attend fashion schools or they work full time and couldn’t attend. But you seriously would be a BOMB guest lecturer!!! If I ask my school - the head professor - would you even be interested in maybe doing a one off lecture? I would personally pay more for unit to have you guest lecture. I adore your sarcasm and sense of humour it’s the best. You’ve made me feel more capable and way more inspired!

@@zoehongteaches So happy to read that! I'm doing a project following the Build a collection from Seamwork and your videos help me a lot! For now, I'm struggling with the moodboard. I have too many themes I'm trying to blend together I think. Too many pictures I want to put there. How many pictures or swatches would you include in a moodboard?
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 6 жыл бұрын
There's no set number of pictures to include in a mood board but you should stick to 1 theme or 2 themes merging together and no more. Every image should relate to every other image. If you have an image you love but it doesn't have anything to do with the others, get rid of it, no matter how much you love it.

I was at a Summer Fashion Design course in July and we did some flats, but we only had an oversimplified flat template, we usually tended to trace the front to create the back and just alter the closures and stuff...but then again, we only learnt the most basic stuff =P and thank you, my figures are always offcentered for some reason, but I'm pretty sure that anything beyond a basic axis will only confuse me further when illustrating something =P

How Zoe, I’m considering subscribing to University of Fashion (but as a pregnant single mum I have to be careful where I put my money cos just buying ALL the stuff you need for fashion design is crazy expensive and I’m hoping I get approved for this $700-$1000 grant that my city offers women returning to work or study! That would let me buy an overlocker/serger - I’ve just bought my brand new sewing machine that I paid off each week, but I’ll buy a second hand overlocker. But I’ve slowly been buying my art supplies and sewing stuff etc... but I was waiting for the grant to really go out and get everything.... I have nearly 100 copic markers, the old Pantone markers with the triple nibs (that I just ADORE!) I was lucky enough that a friend of mine was closing down her fashion frostbite studio a few years ago and I was able to buy them! And what’s great about alcohol ink markers is if you leave the lid off or lose it or they just happen to dry out my mum (she’s an ex fashion illustrator from like 45 years ago before they used photos of the models in the garments the stores were selling so she would literally work from a photo/Polaroid of the model in the garment and have to draw it out exactly as it was - like a photo would look! So that people knew every detail on that garment and then that would go in this major department stores catalogue .... that’s where I fell in love with fashion- it was a combo of pouring over her very old fashion portfolio that was so huge it’s not funny like it was nearly as big as my 6 year old body at the time lol and then if grew more when my granny who was a dressmaker and would sew wedding dresses etc... started teaching me pattern cutting and sewing when I was about 11 - I would sit at her feet as she sewed and make Clothes for my barbies that I had designed by drawing them out first lol .... The innocence.... 😝 Anyway, sorry went off on a tangent lol- the tip mum (who’s now moved into alcohol ink development in her own little lab and she has a super successful brand of her own in alcohol inks etc) was- when your alcohol markers dry out- take the inside out- the roll of ink wrapped in plastic and soak it in a glass of pure alcohol - I think metho? But I’ll have to ask her. It was either metho or rubbing alcohol... and you leave it in there for awhile and your ink is restored apparently .... I need to try it on quite a few of my markers! As I lost some lids over time.... so I’ll fix them and then I have to work out a fix for lost lids for alcohol markers- Cos they are VERY expensive! ($9.95 a piece here in Australia!) Anyway.... my actual darn question was- I’m studying online because I am now heavily pregnant ... I couldn’t cope with on campus so I moved to a great school that is entirely online .... it’s just as expensive but they have the government student loans as they are a proper school with professors it’s just all your classes etc are recorded and are online. I think lots of schools are moving to having this option open to them now that so many online resources exist ... But for added resources (I struggle with pattern making as I’m terrible at math- I have found two books to help me Maths In Fashion - which I haven’t read yet but I hope It will assist me) and then the INCREDIBLE --- ASSEMBIL - HOW PATTERNS WORK- Which has just changed eveything for me. It’s explains pattern making to you like you don’t even know what the word pattern means lol As in, it truly is for the lay person who has no CLUE where to start or how to grasp the whole pattern making thing = ME!!! They have a similar book for sewing which I intend on buying tomorrow. I am just buying them online in iBooks or kindle because it’s way cheaper than an actual hardcopy. The have free resources to go with the book/s on they website too! But it really has helped me. Can you recommend any other great pattern making books? I have a couple from Helen Joseph Armstrong as they are a standard recommended or required reading for many fashion schools here in Australia. But do you have any suggestions for someone who struggles to grasp math? I’m 36 so it’s not like I can go back to highschool and I just didn’t get the help I needed for my math Issues when I was in school. Looking back - it was FAR from good enough. I could have been helped to grasp it but I was just ignored basically. So I am re-learning and self-teaching myself the aspects of math you spoke about in another of your videos (I can’t be THAT terrible as I passed the numeracy portion of my entrance exam that you legally have to sit to get INTO my fashion institute and my levels were sufficient - the word “solid “ was used. But it said I could also use help with some aspects of math. But I was allowed in because I passed at the level required. I was top level in English/communication etc... but my math could do with some improvement and I Didn’t get the fraction questions right as far as I can work out because I literally guessed them.... so it would have been a fluke if I did get them right! But I want to understand fractions and geometry better like you said is essential in your video. I’m fairly confident I can work out profit and loss statements etc... and working out costing sheets it’s just fractions and geometry that I’m so far from confident in it’s not funny. Can you point me in the direction of books/KZbin videos/websites/resources etc? I would be soooo grateful!!!! The other thing is - I’m Considering subscribing to University of Fashion- but whike it’s advertised as only $20 a month - that’s USD not Australian $ and I’ve had some rude shocks with subscriptions or payments when the conversion isn’t shown until it hit story bank account! So it could be up to around $40 a month! If it’s worth it I’ll pay it! I’m subscribed to a two month trail of Skillshare and if it’s good I’ll keep laying the $20 a month or whatever it is because it has ALOT of fashion design and also adobe illustrator and photoshop and all kinds of design, fabric/surface design and business and launching your own label/creative business tutorials on there! And I’m also thinking if subscribing to creative live as well as Jay Calderin has a small tutorial series on there and there’s some cool surface design videos etc.... But I’m up in the air abiut UOF- it seems great ... taught by teachers from great schools etc... and guest lecturers etc... and seems to cover A LOT of pattern making and sewing skills etc.... But I totally trust YOUR opinion and I would so love to hear what YOU THINK. Sorry for the tangents and blathering on... And I really hope you can help me Decide whether I should subscribe to UOF (they don’t offer a trial period so I can’t see what it’s like first) Also- Fashionary- I used to have one of their books and I think it was pretty good. And the customer service was always great, like they send me something for free one time. Anyway, would you suggest buying any of their fashion design products that are mainly aimed at fashion design students or people with their own label (and that’s me on both accounts- I’m 36 and only just starting my diploma of fashion again now- I studied it a few years ago but left and went into hairdresing because I was told I’d never get a job because I would be on my 30’s competing with 21 year olds who had interned at big Aussie labels in the bigger cities I couldn’t move to and I live in a tiny city so that wasn’t untrue! But I was Miserable and I decided when I got pregnant and I decided I wanted to create my OWN label for babies, toddler and kids up to age 10(ish) and also a line of super cool and on trend maternity and nursing wear that is also Incredibly soft and comfortable- something I have found hard to find altogether for younger more fashionable mums) so I won’t ever have to work for someone else!!!! So would you suggest buying Fashionary products? If so, which ones? They seem to have a great fashion dictionary combines with a crouqis sketchbook! And most importantly- would you recommend University of Fashions monthly subscription that will be around $30-35 a month for me when converted to AUD? Thank you so much for any advice and for everything you do!!!! Liv x

I haven't heard anything about UoF, but I'm not sure what kind of education you can get for such little money. Are they subsidized by someone? Even public schools in the US, subsidized by the government, can't get that cheap. And I bought the Fashion Encyclopedia a while ago and it has a bunch of random errors. Unfortunately, I created my channel because I haven't seen a lot of great options out there. Since you're interested in starting your own line, I recommend the books at fashiondex.com, they are oriented for people like you. Good luck!

@@zoehongteaches It''s not so much an education as an extra resource I think... Like a Creative Live or Skillshare but totally focused on Fashion Design. But quite honestly nothing would be like your channel - it's 3am in Australia and I am watching your interview with the college friends that you went to school with, in LA, at their super cool (and yes - VERY CLEAN lol) label studio! Like you don't even get this kind of first-hand stuff at school! And I'm seriously considering taking up a fashion marketing/fashion business course part tine as well that you can do online through Collarts - a great design school in Australia- now, after listening to your 'tipsy interview' with your friend! Amazing insights! So I would be doing a double/dual diploma cross-institutionally.

I haven't done flats since first year at fashion school back in 2003. I used to draw the dashes for the top stitching as instructed by the teacher for that class so I never heard about drawing a thin line for top stitching so that's new info. I bought .5 mechanical pencils from the newsagent and yeah it gets a bit big for drawing fine tiny details but I don't think they have .3 pencils or leads there at all so I might have to look online for something as I do think that would be really useful for designing and art. I never learned how to do any drawing on the computer. I think computer subjects they would have been the next subjects if I'd stayed but I didn't have money to pay to re-enroll and do more new subjects and then I had my son blah blah blah I'm a stay at home home school mum to teenage son with autism, adhd, sleep disorder so I never fulfilled my fashion dreams and over the years went from yeah I wanna be a top designer like my favs Galliano, Dior, Vivienne Westwood and Versace and Alexander McQueen to now I want to do super limited edition made by me on my site, tutorials how to make things I design and outfits and characters for art, colouring in books, comics, graphic novels, animation and video game that I create. Thanks so much for sharing! Your channel has so much info so I can keep on learning. I only did first year cutting, fashion drawing, trade sketching what you call flats, pattern making, skirts, tops, trousers, dresses and shirts where I dropped out before the exam why did I do that, fabrics but the teacher left 3/4 way through so would need to retake the class, design principles but didn't know what I wanted to say/type and no computer to type, did extra research then failed to put my 52 pages of stuff together on time so would need to do the class again. I did do an evening footwear making course a while back too. Watching you is really inspiring and motivational :)

Hi zoe! dont know if you will ever see this, but I was windering if these templates work the same if you are designing underwear? do you use the same templates? are the side templates required in these case?
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 4 жыл бұрын
The template pack I sell comes with a close up torso set. Side flats are only ever needed when you have a specific side detail that would be hard to articulate from the back or front.

Its some constructive feeback fromy our videos the schools dont tell you more then a sketch and a flat give us a collection of 10 and there you go. do you think the school would be upset if i had like 12 or 13 ? different designs or do color variations count as a different design or apart of one?

Hey zoe! do you have to make a pattern along with the flats in order to get your design manufactured??
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 5 жыл бұрын
Someone has to make a pattern. You either give your flats to a pattern maker or you make the patterns yourself.

Flats remind me of alpha/texture guide people use to make clothes for The Sims. I thought you meant. flat shoes before I watched this video.

if im correct the flats dont have to PERFECT, they just need to be fairly accurate to be clear representation , the acutal patterns must be absolutely perfect tho im sure.
