It would be easier to blend on the paper if you didn’t paint the plate the edges so you wouldn’t have hard edges on the paper.

I loved watching you think this thru as you go… Im also experimenting w what can be done w gel plate on larger formats. I highly recommend you watch Robyn McClendon’s you tube video on using the gel plate for large format. You’ll get some good ideas to add to your own.

Thanks so much for the tip! Is it the one called "Gelli Printing on the large gel plate"?
@mayetmahulilileilani2501
@mayetmahulilileilani2501 Жыл бұрын
@@jclosestudio yes, thats one and theres another one or two she has also I think, as well as a course where she makes large format work using small Gelli plates, pressing them on a large canvas. But another person to check for large plate work is mark yeats @yeatesmakes… check out the one of his called: gel plate + corrugated cardboard techniques!! He uses two large gel plates placed side by side to make a big portrait. Im not interested in doing portrait but have done some things I like a lot since watching how he worked in that one. And he has a lot of other terrific gel plate videos.

Oh! Jeannine, Dear, I think you made a typing mistake, didn’t you? You wanted to say « nail » as in « watch me nail it »!! 😉😜 ‘cause I do think this went pretty good, and it absolutely gave me the aims to try it! Experimentation is creative fuel! 🎉

I so enjoyed this video Jannine. I noticed a wee cottage appear toward the right hand side at 16.06 and as you added more paint l was so hoping it wouldnt get covered 😅 A great experiment with lots of learning. I think l heard your baby 😊......many thanks

So many times I wanted to yell out STOP, it looks great already. I guess it’s because I am a color person and so much was getting covered up with the buff.

Beautiful and inspiring 😍 I think you're right, the first subtle layers have disappeared as you go on. I bought a gel plate years ago and got sent a huge one in error and cut it up into different sizes. It's a good idea using different sizes, or painting different colours onto the paper with a brush, to reshape.
@jclosestudio
@jclosestudio Жыл бұрын
Having different sized must be so useful. And because you cut them from one large plate you could probably piece them together if you wanted a larger piece.

Not a fail at all! As an experiment it went very well. I'm sure you will find a way to create the textures you like in your sketch book. I like to mask off or expose parts of the lower layers and then add more where needed. The gel plate is rather like a large stamp, to use some or all is the option.
@jclosestudio
@jclosestudio Жыл бұрын
Masking is a good idea! What do you use for that? Masking tape? Or just something like a piece of paper?

i wonder what watercolor would do...or maybe some kind of acrylic medium, like a thinner great inspiration thank you!
@riteasrain
@riteasrain Жыл бұрын
Watercolour goes very bubbly and blotchy on a gel plate, not a flat coverage like acrylic, makes great textures.
@jclosestudio
@jclosestudio Жыл бұрын
I have used acrylic thinned with water before, and it just beads up. I assume watercolour would do the same. Someone had commented though that mixing a little dish soap in eliminates the beading. Haven't tried that yet though.

So many interesting textures! ❤ I haven’t tried it myself but you can just print with a sheet of plastic which may let you vary it a bit and stop that one shape effect?

Have you tried printing on wet strength tissue paper or deli paper? Deli paper is much stronger than tissue paper but when you lay it on your painting the deli paper, like tissue paper becomes transparent, kinda like a glaze over your painting? Collating it may give you some of the effects you are looking for?

Hey Cindy from Sydney! I love the idea of using a bigger piece as a gelli plate. Will have to try once I'm in a bigger studio. I usually use wet strength tissue paper for making collage paper, and love it. I haven't tried Deli paper yet. Haven't managed to find it here in the UK yet, only in US. Now that I know I can get it in Australia too, I might have to go on a trip 😉

Question: how would you frame this beautiful piece?
@riteasrain
@riteasrain Жыл бұрын
I would get a big canvas fit to size and glue the paper on, cheaper than getting it framed.
@jclosestudio
@jclosestudio Жыл бұрын
Behind glass would be extremely heavy, so I would probably mount it onto a cradled wood panel.

Thank you! I can't see why it wouldn't work on canvas, you probably just see a bit of the canvas texture, depending on how many layers are already on there. Worth a try!
