In an exclusive interview, Steve Bannon sits down one-on-one with Ari Melber for his first ever interview on MSNBC. Bannon outlined, among other subjects: his new plans for the midterm elections and why he thinks impeachment is on the ballot; why he is critical of parts of the Trump administration’s economic program; his views of Bob Mueller and the Russia probe; his thoughts on Trump’s gender gap with women voters; and his opinion of the president’s response to the 2017 Charlottesville riot. During the interview, Bannon said for the first time that he has raised over $5 million for his midterm effort, confirmed he did sign an N.D.A. for Trump (but was not paid for it), and that it would be a problem if Donald Trump did know about the Trump Tower meeting in advance.

Interesting how people like Bannon feels they are obliged to give their interpretation of what Trump says and do, while we can all see with our own eyes what actually happened.

As a far left liberal I was ready to swear at the wall after every sentence Bannon uttered, but I was impressed at how interesting the interview was and felt that the characterization I had developed in my head was completely wrong. I still disagree with many of his views, but surprised at how he was able to articulate himself and displayed a rational explanation of most of his. This interview has taking my disdain for the right and given me a near equal disdain for the way the left has voiced our views. I went from picking a side to not wanting to be part of any of it. It bothered me that we lefties create straw men the way I figured the right does, but also bothered the way the pulpits from both angles manipulate us. The way Bannon unabashedly describes his strategy shows a person that respects the left and leftist movements but still denigrates them and us suggests that there is an anti-social disrespect for the people in general that we are but dull numbers to be won with parlor tricks. The fact that my leftist world has left me with a mischaracterization of right wing figures tells me (as well as my experience in local campaigns) that the left views us the same way. This has really contextualized a lot for me and I am scared of this new understanding.

I’ve had jobs shoveling poop, roofing, lawn service, picking peaches, & processing peaches. By far the hardest job I’ve ever had with the least amount of dignity was Walmart. I’m a bigger guy so I worked on unloading the trailers. We had an hour to unload 2 over sized trailers in the summer. It was at least 120 degrees inside those trailers. It was a honest day of work but it sucked. I made like $5.35 an hour without benefits. I used the money for my room & board in college. How dare he talk up Walmart. I have a masters degree working in emergency psychiatric services for 18 years. I haven’t had a raise in 12 years. I’ve never been unemployed but my god wages are STAGNANT

Dear Reader: Bannon is very intelligent! And a masterful strategist! I also do not agree w/his policies and they are nothing more than White Nationalism! That's not an opinion! The G.O.P. does not even apologize for this. This is the last stand for the privileged old and mostly all white politicians. Wall, bad people (brown people) , & all the other things they said are excuses. This base just want's enough brown people left to work in their restaurant's. And the RN here at my hospital said this is exactly what her family actually support's Trump . She also said her whole family is from Oklahoma, are farmers & spread out across the heartland of America & all told us that's exactly what their agenda is about! Fear of people that are different than them literally! Very eye opening for me. And I am an Independent ! Sad! Global Warming! Ignored and every single thing that could change the future for the kids has been ignored on purpose and they think we can just go back to the 1950's. Wake up people ! Please. JSC

Ah. You must be the reason this was bumped up in the algorithm (or one of them, anyway;-) I had autoplay on while I'm working on something else, and recognized Bannon's voice before he got two sentences out. He features heavily in the "Stages of Fascism" playlist I compiled (for ease of use) and is someone I've studied in horror and fascination-- especially after reading Mueller's report and two whistleblower accounts on Cambridge Analytica. All this is to say that, yes--you're absolutely right about his "tell." Ari Melber is a master; he was already well-versed in Bannon's previous interviews and knew the answers to some of these questions. He also was aware that Bannon is a particularly ambitious White Nationalist, and is working to orchestrate a very dangerous international movement--taking advantage of a cultural divide that is raging through the West to destroy democratic institutions and immortalize himself. I just hope it won't be long before we're replaying this old footage just for academic interest, and Bannon is safely relegated to the annals of history. He may end up in textbooks, but as long as Trump is dragged out of the Oval in January at least the accounts of him will represent the truth of who he was and what he tried to do.

bannon is a marketing strategist - like rove, goebbels, etc. he is far more broadly intelligent than trump. if he's not pretty to look at, just scroll down to hear without the signals. he may well be all the problematic discriminatory dogmatic believer you dislike, but #1:know your enemy. commentors erroneously believe that venting hatred will win. this is an error - their very arousal reduces their capacity to function, and the consequent failure feeds the trump strategy of marginalizing those who differ with him. i, along with most scientists, all those who recognize the ecological necessity for preserving species, significant natural living and ecosystems which give us life itself, utterly disagree with everything trump, bannon, and republicans since the 1960s stand for hierarchical social structure, unregulated profitmaking, competition rather than cooperation, and political strategization for those ends, instead of working for the total community, much less the very earth that is now being overwhelmed by human numbers, toxicity, pollution, and overexploitation. certainly all racism and so on, can be subsumed in these categories.

Interesting interview. Good to see MSNBC offering some balance. (To detractors of this interview, you *need* balance to support an informed viewpoint.) Bannon is clearly extremely switched-on and eloquent (and, have too say, is looking unusually sharp and well) Ari proved a great foil. His reasonableness here aside, given Bannon's views and values, IMO he's extremely dangerous. I'm glad Trump doesn't give him more oxygen.

Thank you for facilitating the Steve Bannon interview. Firstly, this is the most kempt and alert I have ever seen Mr Bannon. He prepared for a sweeping audience with manicure and facial skin-toning. I admit my surprise! Secondly, I admire how you maintained control in the face of his interruptive outbursts, attempts to talk over you, attempts to guess your questions, and blurts of tangential links. The preponderance of his double-talk, boomeranging about Wall Street, opacity regarding patrons and finance, etc, was gobbledygook. He did make clear his intent and mechanics for the Midterms. He desperately wants to be back in the good graces of The Quisling Coward Trump so he's made this effort to show the boss he can handle a Real Interview, not some puff-stuff from FOX. He's working to frame the Midterms squarely around Trump and Leader Pelosi. House Redpublicans can speak to their constituents about their accomplishments, but must tip-toe around Trump, Russian Interference in 2016 and what THEY'VE DONE to make this election safer, rising healthcare costs, stagnant wages, Tariffs... Lots of tip-toeing. House Dems and challengers to incumbent Redpublicans are running on district bread-and-butter issues: Healthcare, infrastructure & permanent middle-class jobs, and standing for Law and Order. And what that phrase means. It's not about Trump, not about impeachment -we certainly do not have enough evidence in the public realm (yet); not about Nancy Pelosi being Leader of the Dem Caucus, nor her being elected Speaker. The Dems are taking First Things First and that scares the Cheese Whiz out of the White Nationalists. For national talking points, Dems and Progressives have Puerto Rico's "timely" recovery after almost a year. They have ICE, the separation of families of asylum-seekers, children in cages. They have poisonous water still in Flint, MI. And they have $2T debt resulting from the irresponsible Redpublican Tax Scam. So yes, THANK YOU for the interview. Bannon is worried and knows the Redpublicans don't care about Putin's Puppet nor Bannon's Grand Plan to disrupt and destroy the US Government. -I say "Redpublican"/"Redpublicans" because they have deferred to and/or supported The Quisling Coward Trump and his Red Russian Puppet Master. In that grouping, they all Bleed Yellow.

Bruce Cameron He wants to make everybody live in it. Scary dude with twisted ideas. He went on his far right extremists tour in Europe, he loves Authoritarian extremists who rule by hatred and fear and the growing number of people who follow them. Steve "wear your racism like a badge of honor" Bannon. Robert Mueller has more integrity and honor in his little finger than any of Trump, Inc. The people Trump has surrounded himself with are greedy opportunists who are after power and money and their agendas reflect who they are as people. Very white, very selfish, very corrupt. That, was an interesting interview. Can't believe i actually watched the whole thing. I did it for Ari. Giving the devil his due, Steve Bannon does know how to give a proper interview, no inane whatabout-isms, etc. They obviously negotiated terms beforehand, such as I'll-ask-whatever-i-want-but-you'll-have-time-to-respond and they obviously had a clock running on the amount of time for each topic, so they must have agreed on topics. Generally, it made my skin crawl, to hear these positions, especially spun as positively and skillfully as Bannon spun them. But I have to be able to hear and absorb this, because the guy is offering us a deeper look, and we need that look. I will *not* assume that the guy is giving us what's inside his skull, as I think he's sharp enough to be layered in what he presents to us, through our journalist proxy. My mental state, after this interview: worried. I wish this guy wasn't on their team, he's mucho dangerous. Thanks Ari.
