Please don't use heat on your back and neck, it causes inflammation that will pinch the nerve even worse. Ice it and stretch, also an anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen) or muscle relaxers you can get from a doctor. I've lived with back issues most of my life. It's an hourly cycle of 15 min ice, 15min or less laying on your stomach on a bed (helps align the spine), then stretch your hamstrings. It's important how you stretch your hamstrings, lay on the floor in a doorway and use the door frame to prop up one heel at a time keeping your leg straight, this isolates the stretch to your hamstring and helps relax the back. As you lay down stretching you will feel everything start to loosen up. Hope this helps for next time.

I can't lie here, been following you guys for a long time, many years of dreaming of one day getting to sail around the world, but this is the change your channel needed to bring the excitement back. You're not building a fiberglass cat, or some fiberglass Multihull, built by someone else, you're getting your hands dirty and genuinely showing us the process along the way. I really enjoy this, you pulled me right back in with this series of videos.

For your insulation, I would consider type I EPS (Expanded Polystyrene), 1# density. It comes in sheets, you can get it cut to any thickness. If you get thinner sheets you can bend it to fit the hull and layer them. Don't get XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) it will absorb water.

Galvanic corrosion is still a big worry. Without proper maintenance and mitigation it can eat right through that aluminum very quickly. A well built composite hull will last much longer than any other material. The advantage of aluminum over fiberglass isn't really about longevity, it's about strength to weight. While this hull can last 100+ years, it would either need to be out of the water, or it would need constant attentive ownership. In contrast, there are wrecked fiberglass boats sitting on beaches, or on the ground in shallow water for 60+ years that have shown no signs of deterioration. It's actually becoming quite a problem in Biscayne Bay, and parts of the Bahamas. Every material has its advantages and disadvantages. It's up to the owner/builder to pick the one that best suites the need. In this case, the only material that might be a better fit for them would be carbon fiber, but that would be many times more expensive than aluminum, and so the cost to benefit ratio is very questionable.
@Jpifr
@Jpifr Ай бұрын
@@operator0 Galvanic corrosion will only be a problem if other materials are not well sealed, composite also have to deal with UV and micro cracks, aluminium with fatigue too. With good care, any boat can last for 100years. The strength to weight ratio is also not that obvious, some techniques will make composite and metals better or worse. Carbon fiber composites are also prone to deteriorate with galvanic corrosion when in contact with anode materials.
@operator0
@operator0 Ай бұрын
@@Jpifr Galvanic corrosion can also occur due to stray electrical currents flowing through the hull and into the sea water. This is actually much more destructive than dissimilar metal galvanic corrosion. Although these stray currents can be mitigated, there's no way they can be fully eliminated. The best defense is to make sure that your anodes are always maintained and replaced as needed.

Thank God for autocad. Can you imagine the fitting problems and extra costs you would have had if each piece needed to be hand drawn and dimensioned? Not to mention the accuracy and benefit of the CNC laser cutting precision. I remember thinking $65k for the raw aluminum was pretty low cost, especially when there would be leftovers sold back at the end. Then, when the flat plates were delivered, it was a surprisingly small stack of metal on just 1 flatbed straight truck. I am really enjoying that you've enabled us to see the entire process unfold. I admit I at first had qualms about Brian working daily at the yacht builder. Now that we're seeing the quality of work and dedication of the builders' crew, I think you should consider offering them a week or two of life aboard later when they have vacation time after your shakedown period. You guys are amazing! I’m so glad you went with this format of building your next boat - found small but extremely knowledgeable builder and be involved on this level. Can’t wait when interior/machinery will start.

This will definitely get you to know exactly how things are built to make it easier to maintain. Progress looks great. Those plates are thick.

Now in Manchester, but 40 years ago working at Pioneer Concrete Brisbane we had a good chuck wagon serving us pies and butties they were great. We welded up barges on the river

Really good editing on this one Karin, you made it interesting & it could have been dull. I didnt see/understand how they covered that gap...with welding I guess. Its sweet that they care about peoples mental health, that was a really nice surprise.Dan has a great sense of humor. Now that I SEE how its finished off, I wont worry about it leaking, but I understood nothing of Brians explaining it. Thats life sometimes.Thank you, as always.

Woo Hoo! Since you're designing your own interior you can prioritize storage in your design. As you pointed out in the last video you were anticipating less storage than Delos. You have the power of the pen. You can fix this.

Love the new build and choice of material. You two will have a detailed and intimate knowledge of every part of this boat by the time she floats and that alone is valuable in the future.

Watching the build process is so cool. I am not that good at welding, but I do enjoy the fabricating process when, as a mechanic, I get the chance. Thanks for bringing us along on the home build journey.

Fun camera stuff... find a decent FLIR camera and mount it on the outside of the work. Then when tacking/welding you can see the heat transfer through the hull.

It's so interesting to see how an aluminum sailboat is made. in the beginning I was very curious how the curves and bends were made. I've seen English wheels used before on sheet steel but not aluminum. I can't wait to see this boat finally splash ! As my name says, I'd love to be able to this exact same thing. This is how I live vicariously through this channel. I actually pray for you guys b/c I feel that i know you both. All the best !

I love that you are building the Cat. I would add family in Australia, and I would definitely want to see showing the design process, floor plan, 3d rendering walk through, mission, ergonomics of handling....etc. Love you guys.

Loving it. This has been amazing to watch! If you'd have told me a year ago Delos was going to be a boat building channel I'm not sure I would have believed. But to get to watch this fabricating being done in aluminum I really appreciate ! And yes, the channel is definitely back up to fun again! 🙂❤️

On the out takes, when you grabbed that hot piece…. I have been a fabricator for 15 years and still do that lol. Loving this series. It’s really cool watching you build. I’m not sure ppl can relate to how hard it is to shape those plates and get them to fit like you have been doing. Truly an amazing job.
