Got the V3 before a year or two. It is a kind a mixture of both. Has the size of the V1, but the bezel, boxed sapphire, dial with that hexagon SM emblem like V4. The watch is really good, to bad the V4 did not use the oportunity to fix the male end links and give us female end links. IMHO V4 should get whole new bracelet with shorter bracelet links. It looks kind a odd the 38mm watch and those huge links. The one big plus on V4 is the movement, consistency with logos (no silly dolphins/sharks) and the clasp is amazing. But. I find V4 is still not a finished watch but better one.

Some very good improvements. I have the V2 which is actually my daily wear, and now I’m tempted to buy this new version for 4 reasons: 1- Movement: the NH-36 in the V2 ia reliable, but such a nice watch deserve a higher beat rate movement; 2- Clasp: the fold-over isn’t as tight as used to be; 3- Logo: I actually prefer the hexagonal logo. It’s classier and gives a better perception of quality; 4- Crystal: The domed crystal is great, but I believe this current crystal is more practical for daily wear.

You can fix that if you have the hammer that comes with the watch tools and take it apart from the bracelet and use a hard surface to hammer the inside of the fold-over

You can really see the step up in quality from v1 to v4, especially the finishing. Not sure about the polished sides on this style of watch, would prefer the durability of a brushed finish. Great to see that they've switched to female end links as well, certainly helps with wearability. Nice work mate

Thanks for the review. I definitely prefer the v4 and think it looks better on your wrist. I think I'll wait till they come out with a v5 with on-the-fly micro adjustment. Other than that it's absolutely gorgeous.

I have a strapcode jubilee 20mm bracelet designed for seiko 62mas spb 143 and I would like to know that whether the bracelet fits to San martin V1 or V4 or both? Another point is does V1 bracelet can be swapped to V4 version? bcos I am a strap guy!

The crystal on the V1 is so much better looking than the top hat and closer to the original 62mas. Hope there is a v5 37mm with a domed crystal soon, as the 40mm is too big for my puny wrist

Although it's nice to see a 37 mm version of this watch the proportions of V1 are actually better. By comparison the lugs of V4 are just a little too beefy. I also prefer the domed crystal of V1. I'll stick to my opinion about the bracelets. I just believe these classic skindiver designs look better on a rubber strap. And I agree about the shark on the caseback. It's not unseen from other brands having something else on the caseback than the company's logo.

So many (micro)brands now offer toolless micro adjustment clasps - San Martin used to do it as well - San Martin needs to turn their clasp-game up a notch or two...

So that V1 is actually a V2. The V1 did not have drilled lugs and it only came with a waffle strap. There wasn't and still isn't a bracelet that will fit the case unless you use a straight end one since the case isn't machined to accept a fitted bracelet. I recall when they were still selling the V1 there was also a disclaimer that said that the bracelet for the V2 and V3 will not fit the watch head of the V1 because of the flat vertical squared machining of the V1. Trust me I have ground down endlinks both solid and hollow and sure they fit when you hold them but flop down when you release them.

The one thing that made me not buy this is those darn lugs! I don't understand why SM didn't taper them. They look way too rectangular and it makes the watch look weird. Went with the Seestern version for this reason only.

I don't know if I'd go that far. But female end links would definitely have been my preference though.

It’s a good job ‘someone’ didn’t buy v1 off you or you’d never have been able to do this video 😂😂😂 They are both good looking watches with good specs overall. I think I prefer the look of v1 as the dial seems to be prominent on the case whereas v4 seems the opposite and the case overpowers the dial, certainly when you see them both on wrist. Yes agree, l2l is greater but that could be overcome with a non-bracelet strap change and I think both would look good on something different. Now I know you don’t agree with this, as I’m sure we’ve mentioned it before to each other, but I just can’t see myself spending over £300 (if you include VAT on this model) on something from AliExpress. I don’t know why, and I know the specs in this come across better than a Seiko (for example) at this, and even maybe a higher, price range, but it’s like some kind of mental block that just puts me off AE watches as soon as the price gets to the higher point. Its not that I don’t fully respect the reviews you do on these, or the others reviewers I subscribe to, but I just don’t seem to be able to get over that barrier. Maybe if something comes along that really knocks my socks off, that might be the catalyst.

The only bit of advice I can give is to really be disciplined about it, treat it as a project but don’t beat yourself up over the time it takes. First chore is to sort what you really don’t want anymore (you can always send me the list too to have a look through but you know my situation), the rest will follow. Maybe get someone to do your ‘dirty’ work for you on getting them uploaded onto somewhere like eBay, and give them a small commission for doing it…..no one younger in the family that would be keen to help for some pocket money?

A number of reasons. 1. The earlier version appears less cluttered 2. Older bezel is nicer 3. Earlier crystal seems more integrated 4. Overall appearance of the V1 has more of a vintage vibe I think rather than the more modern looking V4 which seems a bit off in its proportions. How’s that?

I’m done buying divers from Seiko. They want to charge you 3 to 400 bucks more for sapphire and hacking.
