Thirty years have passed since the pogroms of Sikhs in India. During the first week of November 1984, police, politicians, and government leaders organized and implemented pogroms against Sikhs throughout the country. These massacres occurred ostensibly in response to the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.
This news footage takes us to refugee camps where survivors display raw wounds, search for missing loved ones, and share accounts of the killings. The reporter discusses how Sikhs themselves had to arrange for food provisions, and were living in squalor, bathing in gutters, and lacking medical care at the camps.
“We are homeless. We are family-less. And moreover, above all, no safety. We can’t imagine how we’ll survive ourselves in this India,” recounts one survivor to reporter Ken Rees.
Ken Rees continues: “Mothers, whose children had been killed, wept as they spoke. This was the story of just one 6-year old boy we met in the camp.” A translator told Rees, “Petrol was sprinkled on him and set on fire.” “He was set on fire?” repeated Rees, “Why?” The translator answered: “Because he is the son of a Sardar Ji [a Sikh man].”
The news host and news reporter both speak to the Indian government’s attempts to restrict news access, by shutting down satellite communications or prohibiting reporters from entering the refugee camps or Trilokpuri, one of the worst sites of the massacres.
Thirty years later, none of the architects of these killings has been held accountable for these gross human rights violations. The Indian government continues to deny survivors their rights to truth, justice, and reparations. With regards to the attack on the golden temple, there have been direct independent objective reports from people at the scene that the Indian army had instructed regular civilians at the golden temple to come out, reassured them that they would be safe and proceeded to shoot them dead. Many innocents were intentionally killed in addition to countless temples burnt. Also the 1984 Sikh genocide, sometimes labelled incorrectly as ‘anti-Sikh riots’ need to be addressed. It's important to discuss this as there is much trauma associated with it. Riots denote an act of spontaneity, these killings were orchestrated state sponsored violence, organised and aided by the Indian state, targeting innocent Sikhs. Congress released voting lists and school lists so they could identify Sikh families/houses across cities, these houses were marked with an x so mobs knew who to target, dangerous hardened criminals were released from jails to attack, many were illiterate so could not read the lists, requiring the houses to be marked. Weapons and kerosene were distributed. Genocidal mobs were paid for every Sikh they killed, more for prominent Sikhs, they were told they could keep the loot, jewellery and cash of the houses and businesses they robbed before they burnt families alive and burnt the houses, businesses and places of worship to dust. Police were instructed to ignore any calls and cries for help and were also doing the killings. Women and children were gang raped and burnt alive, men and children were tortured and set alight, placing flammable tyres around their necks, babies as young as 1 month old roasted alive on gas stoves. Tens of thousands butchered, mainly burnt alive, and hundreds of thousands displaced, left with nothing. Refugee camps were set up, women were also dragged from these camps and raped. Once people fully understand what the Indian state has done to and is still currently doing to Sikhs and the land of Panjab it will come as no surprise why autonomy is wanted. All layers of society, including high ranking government officials, politicians, police and regular citizens committed and aided in barbaric horrors against innocent Sikhs just going about their lives. Justice has never been served. Alongside an ongoing economic genocide. The Sikhs can never fully trust the Indian state again and will never truly be safe under hindustan rule. If any Sikh tries to take a stand against the rampant corruption, discrimination and violence they are maligned, thrown in jail under false charges or killed.

First day - 31st October 1984 • 9:20 am: Indira Gandhi is shot by Sardar Beant Singh and Sardar Satwant Singh at her residence, No. 1 Safdarjung Road, for the Attack on Sri Darbar sahib June 1984. • She is then rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). • 10:50 am: Indira Gandhi dies. • 11:00 am: All India Radio listeners learn that the two security guards who shot Indira Gandhi were Sikhs. • 4:00 pm: Rajiv Gandhi returns from West Bengal and reaches AIIMS. Stray incidents of attacks in and around that area. Rajiv Gandhi has already by this time spoken to some high ranking congress officials and politicians. • 5:30 pm: The motorcade of President Zail Singh, who is returning from a foreign visit, is stoned as it approaches AIIMS. EVENING of 31st October 1984 • URGENT meetings are taking place at a high ranking congress leaders residences in Delhi. • One of those meetings was at 24 Akbar Road, New Delhi attended by members of Parliament and senior members of the Congress party including Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar, Kamal Nath, Dharam Das Shastri, Vasant Sathe, HKL Bhagat, Lalit Makhen, Arjun Das amongst others • What is being discussed? The planning of a genocide! How to bring in tyres, kerosene oil, iron rods, and have enough transport to mobilise paid hooligans, rapists, murderers from one point to another...how the police are not to intervene, how state media will be used to show inflammatory speeches and scenes. • Congress MP's are ordered to make pacts with known 'criminal gangs' in their area's to eliminate Sikh men, rape their women and loot their belongings. • A memo is sent out to ALL Delhi police stations ordering the immediate 'stand down' of ALL Sikh police officers till further notice AND for all Sikh police officers equipped with fire arms to return their fire arms to the local police station as of immediate effect. • 1000's of photocopies of Voters list are being printed, containing ADDRESSES of Sikh houses and businesses in and around Delhi. • Organised and well equipped gangs of ruffians set out in different directions from AIIMS. • The violence, including violence towards Sikhs and destruction of Sikh properties, spreads. • Rajiv Gandhi is sworn in as the Prime Minister. • Senior advocate and BJP leader Ram Jethmalani, meets Home Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and urges him to take immediate steps to protect Sikhs from further attacks. • Delhi's Lt. Governor, P.G. Gavai and Police Commissioner, S.C. Tandon, visits some of the affected areas. • Late evening, Delhi transport corporation buses are making their way out of Delhi to surrounding states to pick up paid hooligans/mobs. NIGHT of 31st October 1984 • Meetings are still taking place AND now truck loads of Iron rods and tyres are coming into Delhi from surrounding states. • Trains and tankers full of kerosene oil are also making their way to OLD Delhi. • Jails around Delhi housing the most ruthless criminals are now being emptied of ALL those criminals including murderers and rapists, on the grounds that they can go FREE if they kill Sikh men and rape Sikh women, they are also told they will be paid for every Sikh that is killed and for every Sikh woman that is raped. Second day - 1st November 1984 • Congress party MP Sajjan Kumar and Trade Union leader Lalit Maken handed out 100 rupee notes and bottles of liquor to assailants. • On the morning of 1st November, Sajjan Kumar was seen holding rallies in, at least, the following Delhi neighborhoods; in Palam Colony from 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM, in Kiran Gardens from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM, and in Sultanpuri from around 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM. • In Kiran Gardens at 8:00 AM, Sajjan Kumar was seen distributing iron rods from a parked truck to a group of 120 people and instructing them to "attack Sikhs, kill them, and loot and burn their properties" • The FIRST killing of a Sikh occurs in east Delhi. • Armed mobs with guns lead the way. • 9:00 am: Armed mobs take over the streets of Delhi and launch a massacre. • Among the first targets are Gurdwaras. • Sikhs seen in cars, public transport, including buses and trains are being dragged out...Sikh men are being beaten with rods and tyres are being placed around their necks...doused with kerosene oil..they are being set a light! • Before they are being burnt they are pinned down and their hair and beards are being forcibly cut off. • 120 Sikhs working at the Bokaro Steel Plant Jharkhand thrown alive into burning furnaces. • In Agartala, Tripura 70 Sikh families who took refuge in a police station to save their lives were burnt alive in the police station. • In Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh 12 Sikhs were hanged from the ceiling at the railway platform. • Sikh women are being gang raped, beaten...stripped naked they sit next to the burning bodies of their husbands, bothers, sons. • 400-500 Sikh girls are kidnapped and taken to a Chilla village where they are raped for 7 days!! • Sikh belongings are being looted, their homes and business set alight. • The police refuse to help or intervene. • In some cases, the Police actually assist the mobs by disarming Sikhs so they could attack them. • The worst affected areas are low income colonies like Trilokpuri, Shahdara, geeta colony, Mongolpuri, Sultanpuri and Palam Colony. • 100's of Gurdwara are being burnt, Shiri Guru Granth Sahib ji de saroop are being set alight...Waheguru. • This scene is being replicated in others parts of India. • Large groups of Muslims from different madarassas came out in support of Congress raising slogans '47 ka badla le kar rahenge', they got the state supported revenge of all the killings sikhs did during 1947. • The state media show looped video clips of Amitabh Bachchan raising slogans like "Khoon ka badla khoon" (blood for blood) and "Khoon ke chintey sikhon ke ghar tak pahunchni chahiye" (Splashes of blood should reach the doorsteps of Sikhs). Third day -2nd November 1984 • A repeat of 1st November. & • A curfew is announced throughout Delhi, but is not enforced. • The Army deployed throughout Delhi too but ineffective because the police did not co-operate with soldiers (who are not allowed to open fire without the consent of senior police officers and executive magistrates). • The killings, rapes and looting continue. Fourth day -3rd November 1984 • Massacre continues. • By late evening, the national Army and local police units work together to subdue the violence. • After law enforcement intervention, violence is comparatively mild and sporadic. • In Delhi the dead bodies of the victims were taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi and Civil Hospital Mortuary Tis hazari, Delhi. • It is now believed that 30,000 plus Sikhs Perished throughout India during these 4 days of State Sponsored Massacre. • 100's of Sikh women listed missing / unaccounted for. • 100's of young children missing / unaccounted for. • We NOW ask you to please help raise awareness of this massacre, so the remaining culprits that are STILL alive to get their punishment.... ਸ਼ੇਰ ਸ਼ੇਰਨੀ ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਫੀ ਦੂਰ ਨਿੱਕਲ ਗਏ! ਮਗਰੋਂ ਨਿੱਕੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਭੁੱਖ ਨਾਲ ਬੁਰਾ ਹਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਉੱਤੋਂ ਬਾਂਦਰਾਂ ਠੂੰਗੇ ਮਾਰ ਮਾਰ ਬੁਰਾ ਹਾਲ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ! ਕੋਲ ਘਾਹ ਚਰਦੀ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਤਰਸ ਜਿਹਾ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੁੱਧ ਚੁੰਘਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਲਤਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਵੀ ਦੂਰ ਭਜਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਤੇ ਓਹਨਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਖਾਤਿਰ ਓਥੇ ਹੀ ਆਲੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਘਾਹ ਚਰਨ ਲੱਗੀ! ਦਿਨ ਢਲੇ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਸ਼ੇਰਨੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਵਾਪਿਸ ਆਏ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਮੋਟੀ ਤਾਜੀ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਦੇਖ ਉਸਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਪਰ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਦੀ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਦੱਸ ਦਿੱਤੀ! ਹਕੀਕਤ ਸੁਣ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਸ਼ੇਰਨੀ ਨੇ ਤਾਂ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਚੁੱਕ ਲਈ ਤੇ ਆਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਜਾ ਬੇਫਿਕਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਬਸਰ ਕਰ ਅੱਜ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਂ ਫੇਰ ਜੰਗਲ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਸਾਹਾਰੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਵਾਲ ਵੀ ਵਿੰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ! ਬੱਕਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੇਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਝੁੰਡ ਵਿਚ ਬੇਫਿਕਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਅਕਸਰ ਹੀ ਵਿਚਰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇਖ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠਾ "ਬਾਜ" ਬੜਾ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਪੁੱਛ ਹੀ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਕੀ ਰਾਜ ਹੈ...ਸ਼ੇਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਆਖਦੇ ਕਿਓਂ ਨਹੀਂ ? ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਬਾਜ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਤਜੁਰਬਾ ਕਰ ਮਾਰਿਆਂ.. ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਖੁੱਡ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠੇ ਚੂਹੇ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਪਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ ਤੇ ਓਹਨਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਲਈ ਓਨੀ ਦੇਰ ਓਥੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਜਿੰਨੀ ਦੇਰ ਚੂਹਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਪੇ ਓਥੇ ਨਾ ਆ ਗਏ...ਬੱਚੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੌਂਪ ਓਦੋਂ ਉੱਡਣ ਹੀ ਲੱਗਾ ਸੀ ਕੇ ਕੀ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਕੇ ਚੂਹੇ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਦੇ "ਪਰ" ਹੀ ਕੁਤਰ ਸੁੱਟੇ ਸਨ! ਬਾਜ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰਾਂ ਉੱਡ ਉਸ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਕੋਲ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਗਿਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗਾ ਕੇ ਭੈਣੇ ਭਲਾਈ ਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਵੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਵੀ..ਪਰ ਮੇਰੀ ਭਲਾਈ ਦਾ ਬਦਲਾ ਓਹਨਾ ਨੇ ਏਦਾਂ ਕਿਓਂ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ? ਅੱਗੋਂ ਹੱਸਦੀ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗੀ ਕੇ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਕੌਮ (ਸ਼ੇਰਾਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਤੇ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹਸਾਨ ਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਦੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਕੇ ਕਾਇਰ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ( ਚੂਹਿਆਂ ) ਤੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਇਹਸਾਨ ਦਾ ਕੌਡੀ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਸਗੋਂ ਜਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਲੈਣੇ ਦੇ ਦੇਣੇ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ! ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰੀ ਪੰਡਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਲਈ ਸਰਬੰਸ਼ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਪਰ ਲੜੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਇੱਕੀ ਲੜਾਈਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਉੰਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਗਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਸਨ..ਸਰਬੰਸ ਦਾਨੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਾਜੀ ਨਿਵਾਜੀ ਕੌਮ ਨੇ ਅਬਦਾਲੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਧੱਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਗਜਨੀ ਲਿਜਾਈਆਂ ਜਾ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਵੀਹ ਹਜਾਰ ਛੁਡਾ ਘਰੋਂ ਘਰੀ ਪੁਚਾਈਆਂ... ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਅਜਾਦੀ ਲਈ ਹੱਸ ਹੱਸ ਫਾਂਸੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਚੜੇ..ਜਲਿਆਂਵਾਲੇ ਬਾਗ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਇਸੇ ਕੌਮ ਦੇ ਵਜੂਦ ਤੇ ਵਜੀਆਂ..ਕਾਲੇ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਜਹਰੀਲੇ ਨਾਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਡੰਗ ਮਰਵਾਏ...ਗਦਰੀ ਬਾਬੇ--ਕਾਮ ਗਾਟਾ ਮਾਰੂ ਅਤੇ ਬੱਬਰ ਲਹਿਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਦੱਸਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਸੰਤਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਬਟਵਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਛੇ ਸੱਤ ਲੱਖ ਭੈਣ ਭਾਈ ਕਤਲ ਕਰਾਏ..... ਭਰੇ ਭਰਾਏ ਘਰ ਅਤੇ ਘੁੱਗ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੇ ਜਰਖੇਜ ਜਮੀਨਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਪਨਾਹੀਂ ਬਣੇ ਵੰਡ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਚੀਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਜੰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਧ ਵੱਧ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀਆਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ... ਹਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਚਿੱਟਾ (ਦੁੱਧ ਵਾਲਾ) ਇਨਕਲਾਬ ਲਿਆ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਢਿਡ੍ਹ ਭਰਿਆ ਏਨਾ ਕੁਝ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਵੀ ਚੁਰਾਸੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਜ ਕੇ ਕੁੱਟ ਪਈ..ਅੰਨੇਵਾਹ ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਜ ਕੇ ਬੇਇੱਜਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਹਜਾਰਾਂ ਕਤਲ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ... ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਹੁਦੇ ਤੇ ਮਨਿਸਟਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਨਵਾਜਿਆ...ਨਾਦਰਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਕਨੂੰਨ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਨੌਜੁਆਨੀ ਦਾ ਘਾਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਨੇ ਰੰਗੇ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰੇਆਮ ਲੁੱਟਮਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ..ਸਾਜਿਸ਼ ਅਧੀਨ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਧਰਤ ਹੇਠਲੀ ਕੁੱਖ ਜਹਿਰੀਲੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ! ਫੇਰ ਵੀ ਕੁੱਬੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਜੀ ਲੱਤ ਰਾਸ ਆ ਗਈ.. ਅਗਲਿਆਂ ਬਾਹਰਲੇ ਮੁਲਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਕ ਨਵਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਖੜਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ..ਬਾਹਰਲਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਕੌਮ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਨਤ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਹੱਥੀਂ ਛਾਵਾਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ...ਵਜੀਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਚੇ ਅਹੁਦਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਵਾਜਿਆ...ਪਾਰਲੀਮੈਂਟ ਇਮਾਰਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਖਾਲਸਾਈ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਝੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ! ਪਰ ਈਰਖਾ ਤੇ ਸਾੜੇ ਦੀ ਭਰੀ ਇਸ ਇਹਸਾਨ ਫਰਾਮੋਸ਼ ਬ੍ਰੀਡ ਨੇ ਕੌਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਪਾਉਣਾ ਸੀ ਸਗੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ "ਪਰ" ਕੱਟਣ ਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਅਜੋਕੀ ਹਕੀਕਤ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਧੱਕਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਬਾਹਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹਰ ਪਗੜੀਧਾਰੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ "ਖਾਲਿਸਤਾਨੀ " ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਹਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਜਵੰਦਾ
