I heard somewhere that this song was written to capture the mystery of imagining a place you've always dreamed of going but never have. The songwriter apparently had a huge fascination for Africa but, how do you write a song about a place you've never been? He sought to answer that question with this song....or so I heard.

The keys, that bass line, the drums and percussion....the harmonies. Awesome song. The one thing critics could talk bad about is the fact that Kilimanjaro is several hundred miles from the Serengeti plains rendering the lyric about the mountain rising like Olympus above the Serengeti inaccurate. That's it! A great song that has spoken to my soul since I was a kid. It takes you on a magic journey.

Lol, love that you dressed up for this one! The lyrics are unbelievable, "like kilimanjaro rises like a leopardess from the Serengeti", I mean....what???

It's basically a song about nature, and how humans are part of it. Africa is often portrayed as a wild continent, when Africa is about as full of cities as anywhere. But in the 1800s there was an age of exploration and romanticism about Africa, with the safaris and exotic wildlife, and that's become a traditional way of viewing the land.

You NEED Toto's "Georgy Peorgy" in your life. Their grown-folks R&B joint.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned yet, but the group TOTO has a funny history. All of the members of the group are Studio musicians, and they kept seeing each other hired to do the same gigs. So I guess Steve Lukathar said screw it, lets make a band. And Toto was born.

Toto is playing the trickle keys in MJ's Thriller too. Always reminds me of this song. It happens when the zombies start coming out of the graves and then it gets louder when MJ becomes a zombie and starts dancing.

The piano player David Paich is a genius. The drummer Jeff Pecaro was as well, one of his brothers Mike played the synthesizer and the other played the bass, Steve I believe is his name.

I was 22 when I lived in Japan. It was the mid-80s and this band was huge! You can imagine the mind bend. A 20-something American listening to Toto sing about Africa while living in Japan!
