@@sheeshd977 I don't know, I haven't really looked at what they are selling for these days and of course have no idea of the condition of that Jeep. However, knowing what I know about XJs if I was in the market I'd give it a good hard look. If it runs and drives well, has minimal or no rust, and otherwise seems to be in good condition I'd buy it.

After owning 4 of XJ's and driving 8 within the family, I can say this video nails the good and bad very well. Currently driving a 1990 XJ and I quadruple coated underneath and under carpet with POR-15 so I hope this one lasts me the rest of my life....if you live where salt is used on roads in the winter rust will kill your XJ before anything else as the video said. Another note on the brakes...If the previous owner hasn't documented when the brake hoses (front especially) have been replaced...replace them asap. Even if they look good, the rubber weakens inside the hose over time and when the break fluid gets hot it can make the hose to partially or fully collapse causing the caliper to stick. I've had this issue on ALL of my Jeeps. Hoses are cheap....destroyed hub/axle parts or even a fire due to a stuck caliper are expensive.

I used por-15 on my XJ. It took me 2 years, and I am still finishing the outside. POR-15 base, topcoat for protection, and a sacrificial por-15 bed-liner that I can re-apply easily with just a 1" foam brush when needed.

If the head has not been replaced by now, you probably have a good one. They weren't all bad. Jeep Forums has info on what numbers are cast into the rear of the head to find out if yours is thinner and could be a candidate for future cracking. You have to remove the rocker arm cover to see the numbers.

Love the XJ Cherokee. Brought to Malaysia in 1993 & it's the 1989 model but by doing it CKD (to get a lower sales tax for CKD vehicle + it can be placed as a new vehicle).......I'm very much love & become fond with the 'Shift - on - the - Fly' 4wd where you can shift from 2wd to 4wd (H) while driving.....at any speed. I strongly believe that there's no other 4wd vehicle in the world can do that. But due to the financial situation, I've to let go of my beloved Cherokee in 1996/7. I've tried to acquire one in 2014/5 but after seeing a friend having trouble to obtain spare parts & lack of knowledgeable mechanic. I have to abandon my dream. Anyway, it's a good video, with a deep knowledge of Jeep + tips....million thanks, Bro

Keep up with everything related to the cooling system: repeat everything. 2000 and 2001 4.0 engines in the XJ must be cared for properly. Not nearly as robust as previous years. Ran a 93 XJ new until 2019. Never a problem. Bought a 2001 XJ six months after I sold the 93. Had 187,500 on the clock (4,500 cash from third owner). Ran perfect. Put 5 grand into it immediately just to make it even sweeter. Ran it Fl to Maine. Put 3 more grand at 192k, ran it to ND. If no rust present: they are worth spending cash on. I only let professionals touch it. Enjoy your Cherokee 👍

Keep Cherokee XJs can easily run from $2000-$8000 depending on their condition. Imo, 150k is not a lot of miles, however, similar to what the person above said, it depends who has been driving it. You can easily access what kind of driver he or she is when you meet them. Furthermore, you need to make sure if they kept some sort of documentation of maintenance. Lack of maintenance will kill these cars, and of course abusing them on trails day in and day out. Frame rust is an issue. However, light surface rust is okay. I would definitely treat the surface rust as soon as you can. If everything checks out, body is in good condition, drive train looks great, oils aren’t dirty, no death wobble (test drive it up to 70mph to check for the wobble), then 5k sounds reasonable, imo. I actually disagree with the fellow above about people who sells used cars are usually covering things up. I’ve sold many used cars and bought used cars. Haven’t had any issues. I’m not too old, however, I have faith in most of humanity to do the right thing. Once again, you can kinda tell by the owner if they are sketchy in any way. These engines can last 400k miles if they are properly cared for. Is it lifted above 4-6 inches and have larger tires without proper modifications? Well, if they didn’t upgrade the drive train, then expect less life out of it. There are a lot of things to consider when buying a used car. Sometimes it is a gamble. Point out minor issues and get them to drop down the price to $4500 or even $4000. Good luck! Cherokee’s are awesome! Loved my 99 Grand Cherokee with 220k miles!

Hi , I want to buy a 2000 xj Cherokee, he had a coolant leak and replaced the radiator, I’m concerned it could have been the cylinder head failure!! I’ve read the 2000 and 2001 models switched cast head suppliers, it’s covered 157k miles, should I stay clear!!!

Any cheap cherokee will be a risk/project. I say go in willing to swap out the head but hope it is nothing more than the radiator.

I had a 1999 Cherokee Limited and when I put it in gear the Jeep wouldn’t move at all and the shifter made a loud noise, what would be the cause of it? I sold it back in November 2014 with 296,000 miles on it.
@AutoMotivate
@AutoMotivate 2 жыл бұрын
Could be multiple things. Could be your shift cable, the shifter not making full contact, the transmission fork, or simply the gear in the trans going bad. But if it was the gears, typically you’d hear grinding. Too hard to diagnose without handling the vehicle

@@AutoMotivate It could've been a gear problem, it had happened in June 2012 and I had it fixed in April 2013 a year before I sold it.
