I work at a BMW dealer in the service dept. and I’ve only had one owner slip their timing gear, and that was caused by money shifting. Very solid engine for the abuse I’ve seen it take, even for 600+ whp vehicles

Tommy L Garage commonly on the driver side bolster since it pokes out a good amount and it’s grazed going in and out of the car, but overall, one of the least problematic M cars to come thru tbh, steering wheel’s leather sometimes can feel like it gets sticky or coming apart after a lot of use or if you live in a very hot/humid climate

Also, the crank hub issues seems to be specifically for DCT transmission cars and there are some talks on various forums that it's related to violent kick-downs and vibrations that spin the crank hub loose. +1 for keeping the manual dream alive!

The crankhub issue is an issue for both manual and DCT f8x cars. Money shift a manual, and you’ll spin it (happened to a buddy of mine)
@AldousForestTheLast5 жыл бұрын
Robert Lunatic lol manual requires no maintenance what so ever. Race car feel with a dct lol. I’d have a dct over a standard auto but not over a manual in a sports car.
@matt808_3 жыл бұрын
@Robert Lunatic look man it depends on the driver and preference. I had a manual car and actually perfected shifting for normal driving and doing pulls. It doesn’t matter (for me that is) to have this in either manual or auto because I can shift just as fast. You might call bs but I’ll give you the rundown on how I do so. When you’re driving in your manual car and already know the biting point quite well, when u go into the next gear quickly release the clutch right before the biting point and as soon as you stop there, give a little bit of gas but like less than 20kpah of force to the pedal and as you do so slowly release to the biting point and then fully release. The amount of force you put on the gas pedal for example if your driving your car and you have the throttle open but the car is still slowing down, that’s how little force you have to use. When you do all these things, (I do recommend a short shifter btw) you’ll be able to shift between .01-.03 seconds without feeling any force back from shifting into the next gear like most amateur drivers. This technique can only be done if you have good control of the clutch to the point where you become the synchros. The only car that seems to not be able to respond well to this would probably have to be a 350z, although he probably didn’t recall his transmission like most people did.
@jmciver7675 жыл бұрын
One other component that has seen some failures recently has been the top mount heat exchanger - some have been developing internal leaks and draining all of the coolant into the engine in the extreme cases. Unlike the crank hub issue, which has been most likely blown out of proportion a bit due to the forums (and the dealers don't appear to be very familiar with it), dealers have been seeing some failed top mount heat exchangers. Exactly how widespread the issue is actually is difficult to tell of course. Also, there does not seem to be a specific pattern for those cars that are affected (i.e. model year, tuned vs stock, etc). But it is something to look out for (by checking the expansion tank level) or asking the previous owner/dealer if it has been replaced. I wouldn't let this potential issue discourage anyone from buying the car though (it does not appear to be a rampant issue by any means), just something else to be aware of. FWIW, my car is a MY17 (Comp Pack), almost 3 years old with 41k miles on the clock and I have not seen any issues with my top mount heat exchanger (but I also check my expansion tank level regularly now since I became aware of this potential issue).
@wjohnsonism5 жыл бұрын
I'd like to add that my 2016 expansion tank had a small weeping/leak at the seams. I would notice a small amount of coolant residue spitting when hot. My dealer replaced it under warranty and mentioned that they have seen a few others do this and it's fairly simple to replace if you happen to pick one up out of warranty. Other than that, I've had zero issues.

Love the look-back comment. Classic! The measure of a great car is the look-back factor. I was going to buy an F80 M3/4 a year ago, but I unfortunately, I had to buy a pickup-truck as a tow vehicle and home improvement hauler instead. I still have my 2007 350z that I bought new and tastefully modded. I still look back at that 12 year old car as well.

Once a year, I treat myself to a track experience. Usually, I get behind the wheel of a 458, 488, or Huracan. One year I did the BMW driving experience at Thermal in CA. I initially went into the event second guessing my decision to drive a more "normal car" instead of an exotic. However, right after getting being the wheel of an M4 comp on track, I was blown away. Sure it's not a Ferrari, but Jesus...it's not THAT far off. It's amazing how fast and fun the M3/M4 is and also usable and reliable.

A year ago I picked up a 2015 m4. I was debating a 2016 competition m4 but since I knew I was gonna mod the car I went with the cheaper 2015 and used the extra money I saved for parts. Didn't care for the 666 wheels or the competition exhaust since I always go aftermarket rims and exhaust. I went with a vrsf dp into an aa midpipe into a remus axleback. In my opinion it sounds the best, and for sure louder than the competition or m performance one. For extra hp, I'm on bootmod3 stage 2, haven't dyno the car yet but should be at least 500 whp with my current setup. To go stage 2 doesn't cost much, Bootmod3 ($600), vrsf dp (500), burger charge pipes (500), and bmc filter replacement (175), totaling around $1750. There are also other cheaper options, but this is what I went with. Then add in whatever exhaust you want, i went aa midpipe (1100) into remus axleback (2700), it did cost me a lot but there are so many other options. Burbles can also be added with bootmod3. So total I spent 5500 to get to 500 whp and make it sound amazing. What I'm getting at is, if you want to keep the car stock and be covered under warrenty for sure go with a competition m4. But if youre like me and want to get a bit more wild with mods, then just get a base m4 and use the extra cash on parts like I did. I agree with Tommy that the crank hub stuff is a bit overblown, but it does concern me since I did tune the car. Hope this helps some people decide!

Nicely said!!!! Thanks for taking the time to do this

I also have tuned my 2015 F80 M3 and think for the value the F80 platform is amazing. So far, I have an Active AutoWerke stage 2 tune with VRSF catless DP and custom exhaust setup and love it. Not my daily drivers so I put it on a set of H&R race springs and like the aggressive stance. Also concerned about the crank hub issue but doing the Gintani or Vargas solution when I go to the Pure Turbos. Until then, I am rolling the dice I guess. Great video Tommy as always.
@nmarty11225 жыл бұрын
As a F80 owner (manual) with stage 2 e85 tune (575whp) I can attest my car has been bulletproof. Currently has 45k miles and rips like day 1. Crank hub issues have a lot to do with over-revving or missed gears; the hub slips since it’s not keyed and you get a drivetrain malfunction because of the deviation of the crank and timing errors. In some instances your valves can touch your piston but that is rare. If I was upgrading to Pure Turbos I’d get the crank hub upgraded.

I know how I take care of this car and how much I've put into it. I treat it kindly and have have little need to beat it up. If someone can find a car like mine then they would be at least 40k ahead of the game. Trouble is you rarely know the true history of a car. If the car has been beat, then there could be big repair bills awaiting. I've always treated my cars well but this one I am truly in love with. I think my wife is getting suspicious.

Bought an 150k sticker 2014 m6 gran coupe with every option possible for only 55k. It had one owner and only 30k miles. Even had a dinan tuner and built in radar detector. I’ve had it for over a year now and not one problem with it.

Another thing you could mention is that when the brake calipers turned green-black, the car has been tracked heavily. Without a doubt the M3/4 can handle the trackdays, but it's a way to know if a M3/4 has been tracked regularly. Some people may not like that fact.

I have a 2011 M3 also, manual, comp., carbon roof, white. I DIY service it and warm it up meticulously but haven't had long enough to comment on reliability (1.5 yr.s 6k miles, not a daily for me), nothing to do except replace rear tires, lol.

Why does it seem that a ton of ///M models have some underlying “rare” issue that ends with the motor blowing 😂
@gtmike9165 жыл бұрын
Because BMW = Break My Wallet. Honestly I'd rather get a Lexus RC-F and have a N/A V8 than this even if it's slower. Being faster doesn't mean crap to me when you spend over 40% of your ownership with your car in the shop or are doing DIY shit.

Because people modify their cars and expect the reliability to be the same.

I love my ///M3, really no complaints here with 50+K miles in almost 4 years, multiple track days in Germany and Spain! Only thing I’ll need to change soon is a worn out suspension part from all that Nurburgring driving. I’ve had two friends blow their motors because of the crank hub issue, one highly modified, the other one stock and less than 10K miles. Definitely a good overall car considering all the samples out there.

I have owned 3 BMWS over the past 7 years 5. 6, and 7. And all of them suffered drive train malfunction codes and one of them had seal leaks. I brought one new and the other two with 20K miles on them. The drive train malfunction light went off twice in one year right as I crossed the 50K threshold costing a total of $5, 500 in repairs.. That made me look at purchasing the New C8 and. MUSTANG GT 350 next summer.

Curious for the M3/4 owners who say they’ve owned their car for years and never had a single issue; how many miles?
@soorma53045 жыл бұрын
had mine for 6 years with little over 80K miles. besides regular maintenance no issues.
@BeanieNinjay05 жыл бұрын
Soorma530 that’s awesome. It almost seems like the M3/4 is more reliable than the regular 3 series it’s based on. But I’m not sure if it appears that way because there are less M cars on the road; less data on them, or if it’s because an M owner is likely to be more responsible with their vehicle.

For anyone concerned about maintenance costs on a used F80, I financed a used 2017 Yas Marina Blue M3 with 19k miles in February of this year through the CPO program which added a year on top of my warranty with unlimited miles and I also added a maintenance package that covers up to 75k miles on the car. So far it's saved me roughly $6000 on parts without having to pay anything out of pocket. I also recommend getting GAP insurance and tire and rim insurance, you can add it all to your monthly payments, it increased my payments by 130 bucks in the end but its already paid for itself.
