I've been using a Penn 704Z with a 9 1/2-ft Penn Power Stick for the last 25 years. They're not all I have, but they're a combo that I always take with me. When I'm in the mood, I also bring a Mitchell 303 with a 7-ft Garcia fiberglass rod - makes an adventure out of a pompano or whiting.

Fantastic vid!! Just found your channel and am subscribing. Agree with everything you said. I just started kayak fishing a year ago and got caught up in the idea of over rigging my yak. Wasn't enjoying it until i geared down and just bring the minimum gear. The rod and real combo i chose was actually a penn fierce and ugly stick. So its good to hear you talk and show them in action. Looking forward to checkin out all your other videos. Tight lines!!

Good stuff. You're right about the tackle.I work at a tackleshop on saturdays and i get lot of questions about what kind of rods and reels people should buy. I always tell people they should fish as light as possible and not heavyer as needed. The price of a rod depends on the quality of the blank, reelrings, reelholder, the finish, factory or handmade and the name on the rod or trademark if you like. I also like to sell multifunctional tackle so they can have more fun with it. Specialists always buy special rods though. Tight lines!

I always tell people to start off with a decent set up then if you have the means and understand what the difference is between a starter set up and intermediate set up then you can appreciate the little differences your spending your hard earned money on. Last year I upgraded to an upper end rod and a great reel. I can appreciate all the previous tackle that I've had in the past and at 50+ why not treat myself to something that i used to only dream of fishing with...boy it is a dream to fish with it. All my old poles and reels went to friend and family that wanted to start fishing...and yup...they're still catching fish with them

Well said Brant. I've always said the same thing about gear. A lot of fishing guys on KZbin are guilty of trying to convince people you need to spend serious money on gear, which makes it less accessible to many people. I've never spent more than $150 on a combo. Fish don't seem to care how much money you spend on your gear.

I have a penn warefare conventional reel setup and i love it. Out here we do a lot of sea fishing at +200m and having that big reel really helps crank up that big weight from those depths

I agree 100%. I have caught hundreds of tuna, cobia and grouper, snapper and others on my Penn 45 GLS and my little level winds. I think the current version is called the Squall or the Rival. I've taken many 60lb Amberjacks on those little reels. Of course, when I had a large Blue Marlin on in Bermuda, a great reel and smooth drag helped a lot.
@shorethingfishing4044

I agree with most of this. As a surf fisherman in the ne from past experience, a penn fierce or battle doesnt hold up. Fishing wise the reels are great and can pull their weight when fighting fish. The elements of the surf are too harsh for them. Guys use van staal reels that are fully sealed bc they need them to be able to reel under water and not get any saltwater in them. I personally use a penn slammer 3 bc of the seals and the drag. I can get hit by waves, drop my reel in sand or saltwater and just go home rinse it if i want to and not worry about it rusting or breaking. As for lures. You dont need 100 lures but i personally would have one of each that matches the primary forage of the fish. Our striped bass feed on peanut bunker, bunker, snapper blues, porgy, sandeels, mackerel, spearing throughout the year. Also the fish may be bunkered down in the bottom of the water column where a bucktail or jig would shine. They could also be in the middle of the water column where sp minnows, darters metal lips, bombers and such would work or they could be feeding on top where poppers work best. Surf fishing can get a lot more complicated than boat fishing but yes, fish in your budget, if you dont need all the expensive gear, dont buy it
@eriks9576

this is very true, fishing is a big business. Here in the pacific northwest however our salmon and steelhead can be very finicky and will only his certain colors, lures or bait on any particular day and something totally different the next so it is good to have a selection. You are 100 percent right on you got to find the fish to be successful though! Also we have to fish barbless hooks in places and the more expensive, parabolic and light tipped, strong backboned rods really work much better than the cheaper ones that are stiff. The fish are aggressive the further south you go so less gear is needed, just find the fish and you should catch...

Couldn't agree more with rod and reel selections. I also fish with Penn reels and ugly stick combos. Throw so.e decent braid on and boom ...100$ gets me an unbeatable combo. I think like you. Knowing where the fish are and using proper baits goes a long way. All my reels are Penn and my rods are either ugly stick or Berkeley. Great information you have given.

Hi Brant, Thanks for the tips, I'm keen to try the bucktail jigs. We get bluefish which we call tailor and the occasional Bonito land based where I live in Australia. I'm ordering some 1/2oz, 3/4oz and 1/0oz. I found they vary greatly in cost, I found a Canadian ebay seller who makes some for a good price. What colour do you prefer? I think I noticed you are running some single strand wire above them, what pound and length is that please?

I have a guide friend who thinks the same way. Except he uses $20-$30 Okuma Classic's on B&M catfish rods. Some combos are 5 years old and still going strong. No issues outside of losing them overboard to clients. 20 - 50 pound catfish caught daily and has landed up to 90 pounders. I have another guide friend who wont use anything less than Okuma Komodo SS reels lol...

+1 this. I've had the same 4000 size shimano for the past 15 years and counting. Its been in little creeks, big lakes, beaches, docks, big fish, little fish, and everything in between. I've caught more fish on this one $45 reel than all the other rods and reels between me and my father combine. Finding that reel that holds up and does what you need doesn't have to cost $400. Sounds advice here.

Hey Brant, great video. You might want to post an affiliate link for amazon or ebay for the products you are mentioning. Im sure that a lot of people would rather clink on your link and support you instead of googling and finding it all by themselves. What weight of glassminnows are you using? I bought a card of 1/2 and they were great. But I feel like an 1oz or 3/4 oz might have been even better. Do you know if they make them in heavier weight?

I definitely agree with this but there is no question that you will never get the sensitivity out of a Ugly Stik like you will my Falcon Cara T7. I'm a Bass fisherman at heart and I love being able to feel that slight bite I get when I'm fishing in pressured areas. I've caught dozens of fish I would have never even known I had with a cheaper rod that doesn't have that sensitivity.

From the north east of England where lure species are fewer than the rest of the country, I agree with 90% of what you say, most tackle is designed to catch anglers as well as fish but some fish we have can be very temperamental with colours. Non of the tackle I use is expensive, some of my friends. Use £500 rods, I catch as much on a £200 complete set up!

I've been telling this to my friends for the last 10 years. They spend thousands on tackle have $50k bass boats. They don't realize they're marketing bs victims. This is the best damn video in the world that more need to watch. You have to find the fish is key then your lure has to have action of a real fish end of story. I have 4 lures that's all for my fresh water activities and thousands saved in the bank lol I love out fishing them all the time.

Rookie Budget Fishing a bass boat does make a very stable fishing platform. I love how when stood on the casting deck you're higher than any part of the boat. It just makes fishing that much easier and open. That being said I own a 2018 Yamaha G3 AV17SF (my father fishes with me often and he prefers more comfort)

I have been fishing in East Bay near/in Navarre for about a year, and I have almost no success from shore. I have caught multiple saltwater cats, a huge bream, a ton of 10-12 in. reds on grass shrimp, and a largemouth bass. My dad caught a 5 in. spec. trout on a mirodine once. If I have caught rare freshwater fish in saltwater before catching any keeper reds and trout is my spot the issue? (I am currently a shore based angler) there are also many shallow grass beds where I fish which produce very few fish

The more stuff I have The less I need. I've been fishing up here every summer for about 20 years, every year I've bought new lures, and yes they catch a few, but I always seem to have better luck with the same lures year after year. so this year I decided to stick with what worked last year, and even the first year I came up. I caught more fish in fewer fishing days than I ever have and 90% of them were caught on just 2 out of the 3 lures I used. I didn't just get Bass I also caught a ton of Northern, and even Walleye. I don't know maybe I just found the perfect way to work these 2. All I know is I didn't need all the other stuff. Heading home to Orlando in the morning and Glad I had a, Fun King, GREAT TIME in Sioux Narrows, Ontario. By the way I also do a little Bass fishing at home...again only a couple lures is all I ever need. Down Home it's Quad Spinner bait and A Senko. HAVE A FUN KING GREAT DAY!!

Rosco Exactly. I don't have any gear that expensive but I do have several $150 custom ice fishing combos. I live in Michigan. My buddies always tell me I'm crazy for buying more expensive stuff where a $20 Shakespeare combo will do just fine. Well, I don't want just fine. I want reassurance in my gear when I need it most. That $120 30 inch noodle rod for 10" bluegill has no trouble handling a 30"+ pike when it strolls through. My reels perform without any issues because I buy quality to begin with then strip and relube everything with HotSauce. Never freezes or gets stiff in negative temperatures. Heck, the HotSauce costs more than most people even spend on an ice combo. I also like small tungsten jigs. 3-5 millimeter in size. At $3-3.50 a piece (which is pricey for an ice jig) and I have about 40 of them. My brother thinks I'm legally retarded for spending that much on such a tiny jig. But when we are fishing in 25" of water and I've pulled up 2 fish before he's even got his jig down, I'm reminded how much I love them. Better quality fishing without worrying about technical difficulties wins everyday in my book.

Brant, check out the Tsunami Shield series of spinning reels. They are around $110 and are sealed (not waterproof) and designed by the guy who designed the Penn Spinfisher reels. Check out some of the KZbin reviews on them.

My dad has a 15 year old 2000 size reel with only 3/4 of the line it can hold and we trolled around the barrier islands off of Mississippi and caught all three of our Spanish Mackerel and a 30 pound bull red on this cheap old reel.

Sometimes fishing does make you dig a bit deeper into your pockets, As an example if you are shore fishing the cape cod canal you'll need heavier duty surf gear most of the time. on the flip side if you are bucktailing for fluke or sending small rubber shads after school stripers and small bluefish I'd be using an 8' or 9' light surf setup. situational dependent but if someone is starting don't go for your lungs. Then again I am a surf angler in the north east so my approach to gear will be different than yours.. but I would never tell anyone to get a VS250 and a CTS surf rod right off the bat.

Mate here in the UK your Penn reels are EXPENSIVE and the ones we get here are made in China, the cheapest Penn Battle is around the $100.00 mark and Ugly Sticks have a real great tendency to loose the eye centers under pressure (I threw the last one in the sea after it's THIRD eye did that)

Got a $30 pole from Walmart didn't get a bite today but I feel good I save at least $150 today for not spending that money on the expensive pole.

How do you maintain the Penn battle and fierce reels? I got it in brand new and wash them down really well, but they keep seizing up on me and becoming rough to reel until I get it worked in for a while then it loosens up I have it with both reel.
