I had a BRB 25years ago and she was fantastic. Stunning and easy to handle. She escaped one day and crawled into my bed, under my neck and I was very surprised in the morning to find her sleeping there in that typical ball shape

I remember finding your videos 3 years ago when I had a severely neglected redfoot dumped on me (she’s doing great now!) You were the first time I’d heard of a Brazilian rainbow boa and almost a year ago I got my boy. He was 6ft and had been surrendered to a pet shop, sat around for months with a lot of people showing interest but no one serious, so I saved up and adopted him. He’s now 6.5ft or so and thriving, currently working on an 8x2x3 or 8x2x4 for him. Thank you for everything you do

I used live sheet moss as my substrate when my rainbow was a baby. As he got older, I started mixing in coconut fiber and cypress mulch slowly over time. Now, the moss is only in a custom box I made as a humid box, and the rest of the enclosure is just ambient humidity. The humid box sits at nearly 100% humidity 24/7 and sits right in the center of the temp gradient and I clean it weekly. He has a massive water dish as well, and ambient humidity sits at 50-60% outside the box. I've found this to be a good combo, so he can choose what he wants. He's never sat in just one place for more than a day or 2, and for sure uses the box more frequently when shedding. Oh, and food... you are NOT kidding. This 8 year old boy eats even when shedding LOL

Love watching videos of people that have BRB's. I got my Eeva, 11 years ago as a baby, she was a little nippy but she soon calmed down after some handling. She is 5ft 5 now, she eats a 'small rat' every 2 weeks, never refuses food. She's such a big beautiful and happy girl.

Something that helped put things into perspective for me was learning how closely related the rainbow boas are to anacondas - strikingly close. Of course that's not instantly a downside or anything, but it emphasizes that this probably isn't a good very first snake and deserves extra careful consideration compared to a ball python or similar.

I feel like feeding an adult boa every two weeks is still really frequent. Boas have metabolisms about as fast as cement and snakes can be overweight without 'looking' overweight.

I don’t want to be that guy throwing out criticism to a stranger. So forgive me. But these snakes live in the cooler areas of their environment. Mostly in the mid to upper 70s. They’ve adapted to have a slow metabolism even compared to other boas. I think a diet of a small rat every 4-6 weeks for the next couple of years will do her some good. I bet she even grows in length due to the way most snakes’ metabolic cycle works. Some of this is covered in the Henry Bellosa book: Rainbow Boas, which discusses their natural history and captive management. Our Facebook group, Brazilian Rainbow Boa Domination has some good care and feeding guides. You can find me on there too and PM. Steven Lewis. I see it a lot on KZbin and Facebook but don’t usually bring it up. I had to say something here because Bowie is a GORGEOUS snake, and you have a large, loyal following and I would love him to be a nice, lean, healthy ambassador for a species I adore.
@reptiliangarden

@@LetsTalkHerps Seriously, thank you so much. This is extremely helpful, and anything I find online says to feed weekly and I thought a smaller food option would be enough. I see her everyday and she’s the only rainbow boa I’ve ever worked with, so I truly didn’t notice that she was overweight. I will make some changes and do more research. It all adds up that they’d have a much slower metabolism with the cooler temps that they have. I really appreciate your help!

These videos are always great especially since rainbows as babies are so more delicate and can die easily without proper humidity which happened to my friend, she kept him completely wrong and he suffered for her ignorance. I keep my baby BRB at close to 100% humidity currently and he’s thriving! You could take a juice bottle, and then burn holes into the cap. After that is done, you can then pour the water out of the bottle. This creates an effective rain shower. It will raise the humidity in the enclosure, and it's less expensive than a misting system. I learned this technique from a guy who keeps tarantulas. He calls it "make it rain." Lol!

I live in the midwest, and have very cold winters with very low humidity. The humidity requirement is the one thing that is holding me back on a BRB. I have a BP and can keep the humidity just fine. I have a BCI in a PVC enclosure, and that is proving difficult without a misting system. I would really need to be secure in my enclosure before I moved ahead with it. Is there a misting system that you recommend?

Feeding your boa is tricky. I don't have a boa yet, but I know some snacks got fast or slow metabolism. I know tho that Boas should not be feed as often just 1-2 times a month? And it's going to depend on how big your boa is as well. Some go way longer than that depending on the food size you give them and the size of your reptile is in. I think your maybe feed every 3-4 weeks, with jumbo/big rat or you could feed them depend on their weight Or size but idk how it's done tho. I can feed my garter snake once a week or every other week, sometimes he just doesn't want to eat and it's really comon snakes do so.

Really interesting video. Mine is just over a year old now and I was wondering if she had grown enough. Do you think yours may use the height to climb just in the middle of the night when nobody is around? I didn't immediately think yours looked overweight but after reading the comments I suppose either side of spine maybe the shape could be a bit more sloping down there's maybe a tiny bulge but I think it's very subtle and looks generally really healthy. I keep reading conflicting info on how often to feed, I feed once a week apart from when I move up to the next prey size which is slightly wider than the thickest part of her body, then I drop to about once every ten days for a little while.

Sincere question here: Isn't adding a mist machine kinda getting rid of the humidity requirement? Like you'd not have to spray it down anymore and aslong as you have a cage made of pvc, a huge waterbowl and humidity holding substrate it's gonna be fine no? So then there's less chance on mistakes for misting to little and the survival odds of your pet will rise
