Sailing the world can be dangerous. Storms, rogue waves, strong currents, and poorly charted waters. We are constantly forced to confront nature in these risky situations
And not only have I come to terms with that fact, its actually one of my favorite aspects of this lifestyle. There is something elevating about grappling with the harsh, indifferent aspects of nature and reaping the rewards.
But this week we deal with a very different kind of danger, one that I feel much less comfortable with… other boaters, lots and lots of other boaters. For the last couple of weeks we’ve been exploring the Southern Ionian Islands of Greece, which are a bit off the beaten path and not terribly crowded but now that we’re in the Northern Ionian Islands of Greece we find ourselves in one of the most popular cruising grounds in the world and unfortunately due to the delays we experienced by Isabella's medical appointments, we are here in the busiest time of year. Now if the hoards of boats were simply making these pristine anchorages feel crowded, I wouldn't mind so much but time and again we find ourselves forced into situations that are down right dangerous. So it begs the question whether visiting one of the worlds most beautiful cruising grounds is worth the trouble.

It sounds like a universal problem to me. Sometimes I feel I’m the most considerate person on the water. Anchoring over my anchor, passing within 10 feet of my transom, playing loud music until all hours, waking all the boats in an anchorage, I shake my head in amazement every time I go out on the water. It’s a combination of ignorance, lack of knowledge and being oblivious to other people on the water. But I love it too much to not do it. It’s best to go out on the water during the week. Unfortunately, I have to work to support this habit!

I did enjoy this episode since we are in Greece, Corfu, right now and are kind of those people renting a motorboat - even though I have a license but not so much experience - but: and here comes the credit towards you guys: I learn a lot from you especially anchoring and being aware of the dangers around you. So, when we had the boat I realized that I was way more aware about anchoring thanks to you guys. Keep up the good work especially “teaching” about stuff. 🎉 I hope you have a great time in Greece and all the other places you are going to visit with no harm. God bless! 😊

I know little about sailing, but after several years of watching various KZbin sailing channels, I think you guys are the most conservative and carefully prepared of them all. From how neat and tidy all the systems on Atticus are arranged, how ship shape and well cared for she is, to how much thought and margine of error you put into your passages and anchorages, you guys clearly take it seriously and put a ton of thought into what you are doing. I don't know that I've seen another channel take a lesson on their own boat to refine new skills they might need. That takes a disciplined ego to know, and ADMIT, when you don't know enough and proactively seek out that knowledge. The ocean is powerul and unforgiving, and you can't protect against every eventuality. But you can certainly stack the odds in your favor with the 5 P's. Prior preparedness prevents p**spoor performance. If I ever get the resources and courage to try out this life, I'm definitely modeling after you guys.

As a Greek I can safely say its best visited out of season. Also, friendly word of warning, the Greeks can bit a bit strict about removing archeological artefacts from places.

Yes, also thought it was not advisable, when I saw you picking up little stones. You may think they are worthless as lying around, but they may be archeological artefacts and may land you in hot waters. You probably will end up in Turkey sonner or later and there the law is very strict. If they catch you and it is confirmed archeological artefacts, you will be fined and maybe jailed. So be very careful in removing anything and taking it with you.

Yes, for a country that has at least 5,000 years of history behind it, literally _anything_ can be an artifact. It's not only a recommendation to leave things where they're found but illegal to take any artifacts.

Hi Guys Anchoring The Gov. Or Private Operators of leasing boats Need to introduce safer ways of Sailing with the Steep & Deep Sea Beds it's an obvious problem. Eg Set up 20 or 50 Safe Swing Moorings in a Risky bay area & have surface Rotating Buoy's they can have advertising of the Shops & Services in area. Like big Concrete Bases & Floating SS Chains. Each Rental Boat to pay a Fee to set up more & maintenance Use or Not use them still pay for safe area.

After sailing the americas, the Mediterranean seems quite different. More crowded, lots of culture, very beautiful, but you both seem more at ease in the isolated jungle lined bays of central america. After tourist season is over, youll have quiet little coves to moor in over there. Its bound to get better.

This episode was like déjà vu for us. Completely agree with you about the challenges of anchoring in small, but beautiful harbors that attract a lot of other boats. We had a similar situation in Pulpit Harbor, Maine in Penobscot Bay. We arrived mid-afternoon and were able to find a good anchoring spot well away from other boats and moorings with 4:1 scope (less than I would like, but the harbor is well protected and the weather forecast was calm). Within a couple of hours, many other boats arrived and anchored very close to us with minimal scope. One power boat anchored directly ahead of us, another sailboat about 50-60 feet off our starboard side. We had a similar dilemma about how to address other boats - it certainly does create awkward social situations. I was very nervous all night and monitored the situation pretty much every hour through the night, so I didn't get a lot of sleep. In the last hour or so, the wind shifted and the sailboat to starboard was now behind us. However, since they put out much less scope, our inflatable dinghy closely tied off our stern was now tapping against their bow. Since we were about to leave and I was up at that point, I pulled in some of our scope to create some distance from the sailboat. When we weighed anchor, I was very concerned that the powerboat was right on top of our anchor and we had to get uncomfortably close to reduce scope enough to get the anchor to release. No tangling, but as beautiful and well-protected as Pulpit Harbor is, we were very happy to leave.

I am an experienced sailor, having owned many boats. But for my first time in Greece I decided to join a flotilla, despite my friends saying that I would find it too regimented and tame. However, it was generally a positive experience, removing all the stress of planning ahead and finding a safe mooring each night. I did see some poor boat handling, but not within our group of 7 boats. The Argolic and Saronic regions were too crowded in some places, so next time I will bareboat in the Sporades, and not in the peak season.

Suggestion: when you must share a mooring point, such as a rock as you did here, or in a where you need to lead from a bollard already being used by another vessel, the polite thing to do is to dip your line’s eye under and up through their line’s eye and then over the rock/bollard. If they need to unmoor first, they wont have to unmoor you to retrieve theirs.

Well Jordan, in the boatyards in this region there are about 2000-3000 charter boats stored in the winter. That's the reason why it is so crowded nowadays. We moved away from the Ionian Islands to the agean for this reason. It's a lot less crowded here in the Dodecanese and the more North you sail the less boats you see...

A lot what you are saying, abt charter boats, are true. But you have to remember that it doesn't count for everybody. Myself for example, I live in Finland and are sailing the hole summer. Been doing that for over 40 years. Once a year, usually in the autumn, I rent a boat in Greece. Usually just to extend the season, that is too short in Finland. With this I just wanted to say that I have also experienced the "once per year bad experience". Love your videos, greetings to the hole family.

Jordan, I agree with requiring a higher level of competency for chartering but unfortunately it comes down to the all mighty dollar/euro. Chartering companies need to make money and they put the onerous on the client to be informed and responsible. As you saw, competency levels vary widely. Reminds me of that YT video called “Credit Card Captain”. Insane. Definitely voice your concern with others anchoring. Most will be considerate and ease your concerns but there are those few who will be complete a-holes and do what they want. All the best. Cheers 🍻

I wouldn't sweat it. You saw yourself the problems with that guy anchoring near you with regard to your chain. totally ask him politely to move and explain the potential problem. Then chill. I have been in Port Leone when an unforecasted high wind came in from that direction so you have to keep safe. The Ionian requires the ICC license which will cover anchoring, scope and swinging circle. With that you should be able to work it out and know your circle will impact a yacht with line ashore.

I was always taught that there were two types of sailors. Old sailors and bold sailors. I was also taught that there were very few old, bold sailors. No such thing as too much caution. As you said, respect is important. When I anchored I always thought about if I was one of the nearby boats, would I be happy with the position. Served me well in 45 years of sailing.

After 10 summers cruising the eastern and central Med I'd say avoiding the famous tourist spots is a must. Mass tourism simply ruins the experience. Fiscardo on Kefalonia and Vathy Bay, Ithaca were preferred spots but there are many others. If you head to the Aegean its a different story. Check out the Small Cyclades and Amorgos. The Dodecanese, especially the Lipsoi group, Tilos are wonderful

while we are giving advice and tips ... ;-) .... if you anchor over sea grass (posidonia) in the Balearic Island - and anchoring doesn't mean the anchor lying in the grass, but also just the chain touching it - you will get in a lot of trouble if they catch you doing it. It may be different in Greece, but if you go to Spain, be careful. A small sandy spot like the one you picked will have your chain touch grass almost guaranteed ... And I am fully with you on the assessment of the types of sailors. I have seen too many people thinking they can drive a sail boat because they have passed the test but they don't really have experience and don't know how to deal with lines, anchors and how to tie proper knots ... I guess it's a good thing to develop some patience - you'll need it 🙂

Lefkas, meganisi, Kalamos are still in the southern Ionean. Northern Ionian is Corfu etc. You also have to realise that the Ionian is the play ground of the newly qualified day skipper. If you can't deal with a crossed anchor chain, Greece isn't for you. Putting a fender on your anchor means nothing. You don't have the right to reserve large parts of the bay. Be considerate, your long lines don't need to be 45 degrees, cross them over if you want springs. To deal with a crossed anchor - get the other boat to start their engine and slacken their chain, put a bowline in a mooring line, lift the anchor and snagged chain, pass the mooring line under the snagged chain and use the boat hook to pull it under. tie this to your bow cleats. Lower your anchor and it should come free. Then carefully lower the no longer snagged chain. No drama. No need for a dingy and no need for mucky hands. The issue on qualifications is not the minimum qualifications (5 days classroom + 5 days practical) its that you can easily "buy" the ticket without doing the course.

For the last 15 years we have cruised the Ionian as baby f!otilla sailors, charters and the last 6 years on our own boat. As senior aged sailors, we have sailed April to mid June, then a month in September to avoid the heat and lunancy of the holiday season. In this time the number of charter boats and cats has exploded with lots of inexperianced crews who are are on there on holiday to have fun. Sorry to say we have given up and sold our boat . You nailed it with this video. The only place for a bit of peace is where you started, go back to the Gulf of Amvrakia and head down past Vonitisa and explore. Hey guys, love how informative are your videos. Just watched this one with my bf, we are both liveaboards too, and the madness you described about all the boaters there is what we went through in Balearic Islands last summer. It was very exhausting being on CONSTANT watch, particularly with the charter boats which indeed behave as if they don't know crap! My bf happens to be extremely cautious when it comes to anchoring and, like Jordan, very conservative in the sense that he also dislikes ppl getting so close. Needless to say, it was too stressful and we're NOT looking forward to going through that all over again. We're spending the winter in Sicily and were planning to go to Greece during the coming season, but besides many stories we've already heard, watching THIS just popped a balloon what was already deflating....Ouch. Well then, we already crossed the Atlantic Ocean to come to the med so if this is what it takes, I guess we'll have to rent fender boards with sharp iron daggers sticking out or something! Anyhow, thanks for sharing your story and videos, amazing shots, story telling and info.

I chartered in the Ionian last May and it was indeed crazy how reckless people were. I was the only one doing an anchor watch often, despite it being needed imo. Off again to the same place next week, can't wait!

When I was in Greece back in April the marinas my cruise ship docked in were full of yachts and sailing vessels so I can't imagine how it is now.

Thank you for bringing this up! We are super pessimistic sailors after spending almost the whole season in the Ionian... after a while you just get over it and realise you are going to be the one that yells at anyone anchoring nearby. We've even had super yachts snagging our anchor..

Love u guys. really enjoyed the series. I've watched ISLA mujeres episodes a few times over. Been living. here since 2007. Love "EL Milagro".. going there again, in a few weeks to receive family. It's always been a spot for me even being a local.... love knowing all your story and hearing 28:20 comment about anchoring in places that you just aren't sure about....it all comes home eventually and we are on the other side one day! Love for thy neighbor who simply doesn't know and we are always here to lend a hand and or ask if things are ok :)

Your thoughts on charter: - Yes, it is attractive. Take me as a German (Germany 80Mio people) - it's a 3hour flight. - Standards - sadly these standards drop over time since - for example in Germany - the requirements are lower over time. On top - there are many bad schools in the med that promise you a license in a 2- 3 weeks holiday. The charterers always request at least the skipper to show a license. But if the standards of that license ... - on top there are simply many leisure sailors to be called reckless. At the end: You are right - but I would not limit your thoughts to Greece. better callout for the complete Med.

Need a LiDAR sensor net set up around the boat, set off proximity alarms and send alert to your phone if anything enters your set minimum distance. You can accomplish this using various platforms, but I’m particular to HomeAssistant based systems.

Looks like lots of rental boats. However I find with racing I am far more comfortable with close boats than most cruisers while underway .

Sometime you guys should cruise it Desolation Sound and Prideaux Haven in British Columbia. It makes the crowded anchorage you see in Greece look like an empty parking lot 😊

Great video of a beautiful place... Solution to close neighbors: Record the baby when she is upset, then put it on a speaker before dark for about 20 minutes and if it doesn't work wait a bit, then play it again. Or, do like on passages and take turns sleeping on the deck. When there are more boats than room, then people will find creative ways to pack them in... We have been inland lake boaters most of our lives, and early on, learned that holidays, and even some weekends are dangerous, not just due to the quantity of people and boats, but the also the quantity of alcohol in the people. We had to dodge, accelerate, or stop to avoid being hit by drunks going fast and not paying any attention.

That overhead shot catching the shore line, then transitioning to the starry night sky with the terrain kind of mirroring the previous frame with the shore line ... that was a cool transition

A lot of boats in the Ionian will be chartered, or some other form of holiday, so the skippers might be very inexperienced. They might be grateful for good advice.

You haven't seen nothing yet. Go to Sardinia or Elba islands in Italy during August and you will learn what real anchoring nightmares look like. Just go there out of season, in case you plan doing it. Best regards from someone that was there for 13+ years. Silvano from Switzerland

As someone who sailed the ionian on a charter boat, and am planning to buy a 45 footer to do the same, i agree with everything you said, most of the sailors get a RYA dayskipper which converts to an ICC which is what you need to sail a boat, the dayskipper doesnt teach enough about med mooring, anchoring in different situations, or mooring in general other then beside a dock, its one of the reasons ill only sail the ionian in the shoulder/winter seasons, and go somewhere different for summer, or even keep the boat ashore, normally i sail the north sea year round so a little cold is better then competing with ding dongs for an anchorage, the italian who wouldnt move in one of your other videos sums up the poor seamanship in general with charter skippers, they dont care about you, they dont care if their boats hit something and they have zero anchoring etiquette, best to just let them have it and go somewhere else

Great video. Having been sailing in these islands many times you have to be careful and anchor/med moor carefully. Not everyone does and it is busy. However Port Leone is a very safe bay and there is plenty of room. The other boat should have moved further away or better yet long lined to shore as there was space. Hope you get to go to Ithaca a bit more.

So guys, i was just reading Chapman Piloting chapter on anchors and anchoring. I was thinking all the while how nice it would be if you would devote an episode to just that. And here we are. So thanks for this great tutorial. As always you are right there at the top of my list of great sailing vlogs. A credit to the international sailing community, i recommend you to my friends, along with Leo, Maya and Aladino.

When I was in the Merchant Navy in 1978 we argued that the technology then was sufficient to let the auto pilot steer the boat from harbour to harbour based on pure inertia calculation as we had on our 256m long container boat. The only reason we could not do that was because of the Greek Panamese and Liberian ships that did not know any rules. We entered the Suez channel and wittnesed a Greek cargo boat on the radio asking for help. When the harbour pilot had talked him in and pointed him to the boys at the side of the channel the answer was: Don't mention boys I don't have charts.

Just got back from our 4th (5th?) sailing trip in the inland sea. Always an adventure. There are many in-experienced people there and there are also dangers from the locals. George of Kalamos very helpfully pushed our boat into another using his dinghy, causing minor damage and major anger on my part. Then we realised he owns the only open restaurant in town.... I should have known better - if you want to visit Kalamos or Kastos anchor out and avoid high season. I wanted to go back in to the 'marina' because its been so entertaining previously to watch the craziness. This time, we got caught up in it. There is also a cadre of charterers and owners in that part of the world that appear to believe their manliness is in question if they allow their boat speed to drop below 6 knots. Yes I think they are all male..... Kalamos and Kastos have an amazing re-wilding project that seems unbelievable in the busy summer, but its worth reading about. Monk seals and dugongs! As a European I have to say that your way of summarising an experience in Europe is always highly interesting and thought provoking, sometimes a little, well, American. By which I mean nothing bad - as Brits we sometimes feel ourselves seeing the European viewpoint on a discussion by default, sometimes the US one. However I think your analysis is right on regarding why the area is so crazy. I have maybe 30-40 weeks total big boat experience (including owning a number of boats over the years in the UK and Ionian) and many more dinghy sailing. I still feel like a novice, in our long keeled boat. And we have a bow thruster (that sometimes works) I really appreciate your careful explanation and thought-through views. Food for thought! Fair winds...

This is a tip from an old married couple (32 yrs). You approach people very friendly but you warn them that if there is a problem they will have to deal with your wife and they don’t want that. You want to make them terrified of a wife they haven’t met. Throw in that you have a newborn. They’ll realize she’s sleep deprived and protective i.e. double nuts. Don’t oversell it, but sort of give the impression that dealing with your wife is not something they want. It totally works 😉
