The trans is known for a few things that can make them fragile depending on use, input shafts twist or snap When you start putting more power down around 300-400, using too sticky tires(lots of grip vs a weaker input shaft equals a wonderful snap) or running wheels over 19" (too much leverage against the input shaft). The diff is known to go out if you do burnouts, especially 1 wheel peel type burnouts. And finally the transmission pump chain and sprockets are known to fail when putting more power down as discussed earlier. There are a few more little things that can be a small problem but not a tranny killer. The clutches are fairly solid stock, but built is always better, if you do end up replacing them, replace them with upgraded clutches and upgraded parts that were discussed earlier. Good luck and drive fast, don't die!

A lil info. All of the supercharged 3800 has the hd trans not just the sedan. Most have 2.93 gearing but some buicks came with 3.08s and the 04+comp g with tapshift has 3.29 gearing. Almost all non aspirated cars come with the 3.29s to pep up the car a bit. Hope this helps those interested

NA Buicks and Chevy 3.4 v6 variants of the 4T65E had 3.05 final drive differential gears with 35/35 ratio chain gears. There was no 3.08. You could also get a 2.89 non HD final drive differential. Available chain gear ratios are 37/33 in stock form on SC cars (tap shift has 35/35), and NA has 35/35 chain gears with 2.89, 3.05 and 3.29 diff ratio options. I miss this generation Grand Prix, such a cool looking car and that 3.8 V6 had some guts (even without the supercharger). Would love to see GM bring back Pontiac, with the wedge shape, body molding, swoopy look and all. GM V6 engines were just so satisfying, maybe not the flat quickest off the line, but they never seemed to run out of acceleration, and had a great passing/merging gear. Had a bright red 2002 Grand Am GT coupe fully loaded (needed a cheap car after college). To this day I regret trading it in, the car looked awesome and was cheap fun. When waxed up and polished, I got complements on a very regular basis. Definitely not a racer, but it had guts and that engine never let me down. Also had very firm centered steering.

1st Grand Prix was a 1999 Grand Prix GT. I bought it in 2003 from my sister. At 130 k miles, it needed a transmission and I wanted a GTP, so in 2005, I sold it and bought a 2001 GTP with 60 k. Unfortunately, it came from a car rental place, I replaced the trans at 70 k miles. Almost 20 years later I still own the same car with only 176 k miles on it. No major problems since that transmission replacement, EXCEPT I did have a car fire BEFORE the recall. Minimal damage as it was caught quick. Random crap sensors have gone out and normal maintenance stuff but it still looks as Bright Red from day one. I do have a lot of teens and younger generation giving me compliments in the past few years. They are being recognized again.

I bought a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT coupe with 147,000 miles on it back in 2012 December I had to let her go and bring it to the junkyard back in 2018 October of 2018 to be precise the transmission started acting up it needed a lot of work underneath rust. Out of the six years I've owned it I invested $2,900 in repair and the car had 254,000 miles on the odometer when I brought it to the junkyard it still started it's still drove but it started leaking oil really really bad and these things are known to catch on fire so I said that's enough for me I'm getting rid of it too much money to fix it but out of the six years I've owned it it was the best car I've ever had planning on getting another one next year and actually fixing it all up the sooner or later you won't be able to find these cars and the ones that you do find they're going to be all rust buckets so hopefully next year I can find one and halfway decent shape and put some money into it and actually keep it for good.

I've been looking at prices for these cars, and they seem to have gone up in value. Been seeing nice clean examples with lower miles with asking prices of $5,000 or more. Some reaching the $10k mark. Yes, high mileage cars that have been driven as daily drivers and not maintained the best are still cheap. If you are going to buy one of these and mod it don't buy a cheap one that's been beat on. In some areas of the country, it's already too late to snag a cheap clean one. I've been watching the prices steadily rise on Grand Prix's over the last year. Car prices in general are up, but W bodies for the longest time were dirt cheap. You can still find them really cheap, but they usually are clapped out to hell or are non-running. One of GM's many bad decisions was retiring the 3800. I won't touch any of their newer cars. The 3.6 liter V6 that replace the 3800 is problem prone and the LS engines with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) have lifter problems. did you say 400 horse for around $1000? I'm sorry but that's not happening unless you diy a turbo kit onto these engines. The mod list you described is a recipe for maybe 270 whp. Most ppl need some rockers or a cam to make it to 300 whp. 400 hp on an M90 set up is nigh on a max effort m90 set up. I have this engine + m90 in my bird. Tons of torque, but it's a lil disappointing in the hp department. Although turbos really wake these engines up. Like ppl regularly make over 500-600 whp with a turbo.

Usually if you put the shift kit in the transmission from zzp it seemed to prolong the life of that glass transmission

A buddy in high school got a 93 Bonneville gtp from his mom. He sold it to a friend of mine later on, who sold it to another friend after a few years. He had it for a while and then signed it over me. It was a fun car, even with Fleetwood Mac stuck in the cassette player 😂😂. As for another stimmy check. #FJB #LetsGoBrandon

I searched 100 miles out from cinti ohio the cheapest was over 3200 and it wasn't even the sc version. where are you finding what you are saying?

Marketplace don’t just look for GTP they are the most expensive out of the 3800 SC along with Bonneville SSEI. Try looking for A Regal GS I have 2 paid 1250 for one and 1700 for other 3k for 2 SC Wbodies. Impala SS as well are a little pricey. Just google all 3800 SC cars and go from what u like best.

I had the 99 special edition and it was fun to drive. Suspension needed work. Too soft for me. The steering rack is frikkin expensive to replace. It’s a variable ratio rack. Only for this car. My trans went at 100km.

I have a GTP that looks great, but the underbody is all rust. L67 / Gen V M90 conversion / Air-Water Intercooler / Diamond forged & ceramic coated pistons / Ported heads, Quaif posi, 3.69 gears, built trans, Konis on eibachs, car is faster than a Z06 vette of the era.... Eradispeed 2pc rotors, Havent driven it in over 8 years. (since I spun a MB.) Pulled the engine last night, but have no plans to put it back in.... Anyone looking for parts, or want the entire thing?

I got a 8out of 10 ,,,99 GTP supercharged .never seen winter ,the ruin of these cars was unit construction frame ,,cover the frame with exterior plastic ,and every one I seen is rusted out , $ 4750,,gram as clean as the rest of the car ,was offered $7000 for it ,I couldn't do it ,these old GTP s are a habit ,I love the car and treasure it ,I want a ss monti Carlo, but they are all rotted out in canada its a recipe for disaster ,nice cars ,spotless ,but under carriage rotted out ,,oil spray undercoat 2 a year ,,mine is mint ,and a true surviver in Canada

I'm only here to share a video concerning Grand Prix Mods. I'm attempting to get a friend that I sold my 92 and 97 SHOs to sell the 92 and buy one of these. Concerning Politics.. Never paid much attention to them until a Pro Wrestling Reality TV Actor was elected President. I was too busy putting myself through college, minus loans/grants while paying for 100% of everything on my way to getting a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology. Shrugs Cars are literally a waste of money
