I hate to say it but a lot of people just praised this camera way way to much as an "action camera" or a "go pro killer" and it's been some time since I made this video but the RX0 is not an action camera or a go pro killer, it's a small production camera and using it for production it will probably be amazing! Hi, you didn't give a comparison of the low light performance with the GoPro. I can't tell anything from that footage because there is no comparison with another camera and I have no idea how dark it was...

It's been awhile since I made this, but I dont think the low light was my main focus for the video. Sorry it wasn't more helpful
@salmo62635 жыл бұрын
OK. Thanks for reply. You said it 'falls apart big time in low light'. Maybe if you say stuff like that you should demonstrate in some small way, or not bother saying it. Because otherwise it becomes positively unhelpful.
@NicksFort5 жыл бұрын
@@salmo6263 the shot @10:45 is during the day in an open cave, just as you walk under an overhang into the shadow. It was relatively dark, but with ample ambient daylight. I would say it was the very beginning of a "low light" situation. You had enough light to read a book in that shot that is referenced. I demonstrated the bad low light with the poor footage in that shot at 10:45. Yes a comparison would have made it better. But hopefully this information I shared now gives you enough context and confidence to trust me when I say it falls apart big time in low light.
@salmo62635 жыл бұрын
yes, you sound like you know what you're talking about which is why I was interested in your controversial opinion on the low light performance (it is after all billed as being good in low light). Thanks for explaining. The frame rate shutter speed ratio thing very informative. :)

For codecs the XAVC-S is way faster than the GoPro when transcoding in a pro post production. The low light is beyond better in high ISO.
@NicksFort7 жыл бұрын
True and true!! Though I was really looking at this camera as an "on the go option" and yes the codec in the Sony RX0 is good and the low light on the go pro is pretty poor, but at the end of the day the RX0 was to much of a production camera for me and not enough of a "filming on the go" camera. It's not a bad camera for certain applications that's for sure!

@Decco63066 жыл бұрын
"Nick your doing it wrong" First, this camera was about the cinematic aspect of the camera rather than the "action" aspect that most people are familiar with. The Sony was NOT designed for "action" shots which is why it sucks on the video stability. Its meant to be on a gimble. The dynamic range and the Bit rate (which is REALLY important for professional shots and color grading) Is MASSIVLY better than any consumer Gorpo or "action" camera Its more or less a backup "Movie/TV" camera so to speak. or for tight spots where a full-on professional shots would be impractical. Not only this but there are MUCH MORE features and settings that the Sony has over the Gorpro.
@NicksFort6 жыл бұрын
100% that the RX0 is for CERTAIN applications. BUT using it as an action camera OR a run and gun camera is not really one of them AND a lot of people think that the RXO is an action camera or a "Go Pro Killer". If you are doing professional filmmaking then you can use this camera for certain scenarios and it's going to be amazing. My point is that using the RX0 for vlogging, or everyday walking around filming or as an action camera is a bad idea. Additionally when I made this video no ND filters were available. Also definitely wouldn't be putting this on a gimbal. If you're using a gimbal you might as well use a better camera like an A7S II. You are right about where it should be used but a lot of people look at this camera and think about using it for a lot things that it shouldn't be used for.

Would you consider this camera for doing motion analysis in controlled lighting @ 250-500fps? I was interested in this camera for the ability to remotely control multiple cameras, in sync & IIRC w/ remote control I could hit the capture button after the motion & it would store 4 seconds of prior video already in the buffer. I'm not aware of any other reasonably priced cameras that could do this. Also, I can use external power if that helps w/ the heat issues. Thanks! Great video, BTW!
@NicksFort7 жыл бұрын
I will be honest; I really am unsure if this would work in your situation. I do think that having controlled lighting and a controlled environment is going to really help you out with getting good results. Also you would most likely be able to use some sort of ND filter to help with your exposure also. My guess is it could probably work, but it's really going to take you testing it out I think! It's a tool for professional videographer and less for bloggers and average consumers. The small size and high dynamic range makes it perfect for high quality RX100 level video shooting in harder to shoot area. But like you said, the lack of aperture control is a big issue and it's more for a planned professional shots than average walk around auto mode camera
@NicksFort7 жыл бұрын
The dynamic range is pretty awesome, especially after now that I have been playing with the GoPro Hero 6 more and the gopro dynamic range is pretty bad. I am still tempted to get a variable ND setup for this but the only thing that is stopping me if the lack of auto focus. IF it had auto focus I would turn the RX0 into an epic "action sports" camera!

My friend, this cam is not intended for the purpose you are using or testing it for. It's a B roll cam to be used in a multi cam pro video production, where you need to have a cam angle thats unusual, small space, set and forget.

You are right, it's definitely not made for the run and gun style of filmmaking. Thank you for taking your time to do the review. It would appear to me that the camera reviewing has been designed for multi camera switching, for example the black magic a time switcher or various other new Sony products they have released recently. You’re probably thinking why do I say that…. I live stream with a multi camera set up every week and are use six cameras, two of these are go pros and one of the main problems they suffer from is poor in lowlight. The camera you are showing in the right circumstances in a live production connected to switcher would return excellent results indoors in low lighting environments. Keep up the good work.
@NicksFort7 жыл бұрын
Totally man! This Sony RX0 would be an amazing camera to have in a live switching situation and would absolutely be better than a GoPro in that scenario. I would recommend you consider switching over to the RX0 for your setup if you can. It might be a good idea to get the ND filter and adapter also just so you can have more control on your camera and the setting!

The rx0 sensor looks like it has a better dynamic range. I see what you mean about its problems though. It really needs nd filter and there is a filter kit available but for the price its should come with the camera. I am interested in it for photo night timelapse. It appears to be good for this. Battery life is a bit of an issue though. I don't want to plug in a power bank as it would make it not waterproof.

NicksFort nice man I really like the camera. The reason why 4k is so important for me is because it doesn't have a stabilized sensor. I decided to go with the z camera e1. It's a lot bigger lol. MAN!! I wish I you would have made this video sooner. I too was pitched the video capabilities of this thing, and bought it like 3 weeks ago. I thought it was going to be my run and gun, point and shoot/vlogging AND underwater camera at the same time. I bought it right away bc I was going on a month long trip to the Riviera Maya and was going to be in water almost every day. (Trip I'm in the middle of now, thinking about buying a gro pro) Needless to say, I am sooooo disappointed. Every bit of footage has been poorly exposed, the focus is horrible in every mode (for video at least), unless like you say, I'm just doing it all wrong.....and the low light capabilities are just piss poor. But the worst thing for me is the stabilization. It is horrid. When using it as an action camera, moving all around like snorkeling or diving, (where your movements are naturally more fluid since you're in water) I have seriously gotten very few usable clips. Do not buy this thing. Even if the ND filter attch. comes out.
@NicksFort7 жыл бұрын
Damian thanks for the comment and I wish I had come out with it earlier also (I'm not youtube famous enough to get cameras early yet though lol so I was in line with everyone else)!! It's pretty clear that this camera is best used as an action cam. IF/WHEN Sony comes out with a firmware update that allows auto-focus in video that will be a game changer if you can pair that with the ND filter adapter and you can use a variable ND. Then you could really use it on the run! As for the GOPro I hate to say it but the first Hero6 I bought had some issues with freezing, I did exchange it and they have an update for the firmware which hopefully will help (but it still looks like a GOPRO lol so that's a thing). I am still voting for the SONY RX0 can get to a place where it works on the go!

Just don't buy a go pro 5. they have had major leaking problems in water.

NicksFort, ya we will see when and if that happens. For now, I was able to return my Rx0 to Sammys Camera. It was good of them to do it for me, considering I was past the return time limit by over a month. I'm gonna rock the gopro 6 for now until something better shows up. Keep up the good work!

That is good that they let you return the camera! I have a hero 6 that I have been playing with a little and I am still on the fence about keeping it!

Why so many people expect from this photographic camera to be a video cam ? Just because of the form factor that looks like some action cam ? Sony said this is not an action cam, this is not a video cam, but this is a photographic cam (that eventually can take some video too, video is a bonus, not what it is designed for). It is clearly expressed.

Bummer that the Sony Rx0 wasn't able to replace the go pro this time around...but I still dream of the next version of the RX0 and how that will!
