Fun tip, with digital patterns, you can mount a projector to your ceiling and project a pattern directly onto your cutting table or floor. There's about a million ways to do it, but it changed the game for me for sure. Especially because then you can also project details directly onto the fabric to mark.

my high school art department made a folding frame out of pvc pipes and a plywood and velcro harness for the projector, it was good BC you could move it around or make it higher or lower as long as you check your scale before you work

Advice from Lana Lilly's corset making class. Use masking tape for your corset pattern, not duct. Duct tape will stretch in application and deform when removed. Masking tape (besides not stretching) will tear if you are trying to make it compress you too far.

I will say as a historian in training who has made 3 corsets and working on a 4th, they aren't meant for waist reduction. It's more an illusion and even tight lacing is similar to sucking in your gut. Waist reduction is more waist training. Also the mesh corset you showed is also called a skeleton corset, at least I've seen old ads for them nicknaming them that, because they show the boning channels. Just some fun facts

​@@nameloading...4670nope! Because skirts were so gosh dang heavy (and because you were wearing so many of them) the corset basically made sure that the skirts weren't gonna dig into your waist. Otherwise you were gonna have very painful skirt waistbands.

@@nameloading...4670yes and no. The petticoats will give your skirt shape, may keep you warm and smooth out the lines from crinolines. Since there were so many layers worn, the corset helped to distribute the weight of said layers and was helping with comfort.

I am kinda grateful that your video got recommended to me. I just did a "corset" (more like a boned bodice with a zipper for a cosplay) and I did so many things wrong. From binding with satin tape to putting the boning channels without tape but topstiching two seams on top of two fabrics so the boning channel would be in the fabrics themselves. It's good to know what exactly I did wrong so I can do them right when I make an actual corset, so thanks! Also I use zip ties and I finish the edges by cutting them in a round shape and melting them with a lighter. Works perfectly for me.

Well we all need practice! But, using your seam allowance as boning channels is also totally a way you can do it! So it sounds like you did just fine :)

6:08 A piece of advice for this part. If you aren't intending to tight lace, try to breathe diaphragmatically to expand your stomach as much as possible. This will make you corset more comfortable. Corsets, even historical incorrect ones (i.e. my renn fair waist cinch), can be as coftorable as a modern cvs back brace if you do it right.

Re: stays, the second ever sewing project I tackled was a pair of stays! They're definitely time consuming (so, so time consuming!), but I thought it was actually, weirdly, a really good project at that skill level as long as you were willing to put in the work. A lot of simpler stays patterns don't require you to piece together different parts or machine-sew any curved seams, both of which I found intimidating when I was starting out, and you get a LOT of practice at important beginner skills like pattern tracing, sewing in a straight line, hand stitching, etc. Also, they're weirdly forgiving - there's so much visual interest from the one million boning channels in the finished project that you really don't see the places where you lost the plot with your boning channels, and all of the difficult edging is along the bottom, where it's less eye-catching if it's messy. They're not gonna be for everyone as a starter project, but if you're a beginner wanting to make something that can look really good despite not actually requiring that much skill, honestly, 10/10 would recommend. Just plan for it to take, like... 40 hours.

For Canadian sewists, Farthingale Corset Making Supplies is a great local company - they even sell premade lacing tape in case you don't have the means or inclination to do grommets or hand sewn eyelets. Fantastic introduction! I watched this while sewing boning channels into my first corset attempt, a wasp waist style. With a zipper front. I think I might have discovered that a well inserted zipper is actually more of a headache than a busk….

Pfaff user here, and I can say they are a lot more user friendly (at least for me) than brothers or singers. My grandfather got me my first sewing machine; and I loved it till it finally didn't work anymore and couldn't be fixed. condolences on your grandmother, and I hope her creative soul is in that machine and helps you whenever you need it most.

I cried when I heard about your grandma, I lost my dad last year and recently got my mom’s old Pfaff. I dread the moment she’d have to leave me as well so that combo of facts struck too close to home. I am so grateful that I got to spend so much time with my dad those last months (we knew before the year started that 2023 would be the year we were gonna loose him) and that we were that close that he felt great enough to also confide in me, not just the other way around, like it often is. Even with us being that close (and thus me kinda already knowing everything), it still baffles me how many questions I still wanted an answer too, to fill in the gaps of the details I didn’t already know (or mostly the contradictory details in the stories I heard multiple times due to him having contracted some brain damage after one of his accidents about a decade earlier). I’ll never take our time for granted, that is the true wealth we can have: great relationships with lots of love and memories. Knowing that we were loved and that we mattered tremendously 💜 My condolences for losing your grandma, I bet she was/is very proud of you and would love that you have her sewing machine ❤ Now I’m off to another video of yours!

Wish I would have seen this 6 months ago!! I finished making my first ever corset..in a bodysuit.. I did poison ivy for Animate!Columbus last weekend and oh boy was it a hard wear! The bodysuit itself was 3 layers of fabric with one layer of interfacing and my goal was for the suit to be able to stand on its own..it sure could! I would love to re-make it someday when I have more experience because there are sooo many mistakes😭 I love to watch your videos while I'm sewing and wig making it really does give me motivation! I have a friend that used to make my coresets and I'd crochet her lacing, lol. (one costume required lacing for what seemed like ALL of the seems, thankfully she gave a year and yardages that she would need for each type.) I have a very large bust so anything off the shoulder or sleeveless I have to wear one. Because of that I have to take into account what I want to wear and find out if it will look okay... you would not believe some of the questions you get when you either wear one while trying stuff on or bring one to try stuff on, lol. Mostly I only wear it with costumes, formal wear, and some Blouses that are loose enough and the right fabric that it doesn't show. I honestly do prefer them, but I've yet to find one that is comfortable enough for regular daily use. I'm not saying mine aren't comfortable but I haven't found one where I can do chores, exercise, work, and read in, lol.

@@hotjanuary The nicer ones were about why a corset. The weirder ones were, sexual in nature and had to do with fetishes. Thankfully those were fewer and far between. I did get asked if I was into self-harm a couple times, which threw me for a loop. Mostly just comments about what time period we are in. Some mocking statements, etc. A few questions on if I cosplayed which I was fine with. I don't but I love Halloween so I'm familiar with costuming. Lots of questions of practicality and things along that vein. The weirder ones were about body image and ranged from whether I had an issue with my body type to why I would want to change my shape. I did have issues with my body shape but not because I'm overweight. Its because I had a very large bust. I had a curvy figure and while I was "considered" overweight for my height my bmi was fine, it was all chest!! (34to36-G) Not the greatest thing for hormonal teens or young adults trying to figure themselves out. I also got asked if I was a wanna-be Dolly Parton. It was almost always a struggle to get them to get me the right size. I needed it to fit my bust or one size larger so I could alter it as needed. Ps. I often got asked if they my chest was natural or once wear I'd gotten the work done, lol. That last one had me laughing as by then I really wanted a reduction and was talking about it seriously with my doctor!

Not that they had much in terms of what I would want to wear with a corset but I do go there for fabric and other things so bringing the get up I'm altering wasn't out but I don't try things on there in general anymore, its just wiggy.

@@animehuntress9018 I really wish Bernadette Banner and Karolina Zebrowska were well known outside of the cosTube community. These propaganda about the corset is so annoying. It holds no scientific validity and it’s confidently repeated by people who’ve never worn a corset and have never even bothered to Google it, which is so ironic when you bring bras into the conversation. My bras have caused me health problems (including migraines) but my corset has not. Aranea Black has a free sports (riding) corset pattern on her website (last I checked). I hope to find the time to make it this summer and see if it can be used to lounge around. The only bras I’ve found that don’t give me migraines or pain are the old fashioned thick strapped, high collar ones with no underwire. Unfortunately, that means all but three of my summer tops are incompatible with the bra. So, I really need a lazy (and summer) corset. My current one is made from cotton canvas and it’s not summer friendly. I bought a non stretch mesh fabric. Hopefully I succeed. I’ve never worked with that material before. If I fail, ordering more fabric would be a pain (4 months shipping). They don’t sell it at the fabric store.

Found this video after making three-ish corsets (more if you include mock-ups). I had seen a video of someone making a stay - not even a tutorial - and having started sewing maybe two weeks prior went, well that doesn't seem too hard. I found a free corset belt pattern that I had to size up significantly, but it was helpful as a guide for boning, and barreled ahead. This added some much needed context and advice that will help me in my future corset endeavors. Also so far my personal favorite boning has been cable ties. The Joann's boning is shit, and I haven't been able to get steel boning yet, especially as I'm learning how to properly size my corsets cable ties are nice because you can cut them to size, then use that measurement to figure out what length of steel boning you need (if you don't want to buy a steel roll and have to deal with cutting steel yourself).

I agree on the grommet machine! I got one because I have issues with my muscles spasming so I'm not as strong as I used to be. I used this to put lacing into a gown I made years ago, but got to porky for. It was a dream to use!!

I've been planning on cosplaying mew Lettuce from tokyo mew mew for years now and I think the only way to make it look good enough in my eyes is to do a body suit type corset. Just thinking about it is intimidating as someone who's never dabbled in corset making before. This video gave me a lot of insight to some of the basics and I think I might work it out somehow, thank you!

maybe I shouldn't comment, since this video isn't made for me, but the fit issues that are being solved here with a duct tape pattern are more easily resolved with a commercial pattern. A duct tape pattern doesn't come with waist reduction, since the pattern will just sit on your skin without distorting the shape of the body. The lacing gap and general reduction and stretch need to be removed as well. With commercial patterns, those steps are already taken, and changing the shape at te waist is also very possible there. Obv, you do you, but I think a great, thought out pattern is the foundation of a well-made garment. On that note too, the closet historian has wonderful videos explaining how to adapt patterns.

I make stretchable corsets since I need the ease and flexibility in the fabric so I can cinch in without too much strain. I use sturdier stretch fabrics like neoprene rather than non stretch for comfort reasons and because I get claustrophobic in non stretchy clothing and it affects my breathing since I have to sing and dance in a corset. Also my corsets are meant for flexibility and support without discomfort. One day I will make a proper non stretch corset but I need to perfect a pattern for that garment as my current pattern is made with stretch in mind. Also an underbust style for me looks more like an 1860s swiss waist since I have a shorter torso when I have large skirts.

oh wow- thank you for this tutorial- I've only recently stumbled on to your channel, but I like how thorough your explanations/steps are- it helps my understand & better visualise what I need to know as a new sewist. I really really REALLY appreciate the tips on the boning types in particular as I was never sure what would work! Couldn't help but think back to when I *made* a cOrSet out of webbing with a piece of wood as my busk!!!! Now, I have a better understanding of what I need to do & how to prepare on my next attempt....
