I have reached the point that when I buy a watch I give a watch away, usually to either my son, or father. They're really happy with the way things have been turning out.. 😄 I've more recently started buying fewer watches, but more straps, and bracelets.

I like the "what would you replace it with" question, but I always ask myself this: If I made a mistake/changed my mind and wanted to buy the same watch again... 1. Would I be able to? 2. Where could I buy it from? 3. Could I get it brand new? 4. Could I get it at a reasonable price? If I'm not happy with those answers, then I would consider not selling. I think those are some good questions to ask as well.

Completely true about the strap, first “big” watch purchase for me was a Richard Legrand Oceanfairer Mk III (per Timeteller review), after awhile the bracelets sharp edges near the end links burned me out on it... put on a thick leather rally strap and holy crap is that watch beautiful now.

Great subject and advice! I also had a Jazzmaster OpenHeart, but blue. It was the second Hamilton watch I owned, but after I bought a Hamilton Spirit of Liberty blue auto, I didn’t wear it and I just didn’t like it as much any more. I eventually sold it and haven’t had a single regret doing so.
@egutzait3 жыл бұрын
I have the 42mm Jazzmaster Openheart in steel with the blue dial. It's great. Get it with the bracelet though, the bracelet that goes with it is actually really nice and you can always put it on leather after you get it.
@kamael11254 жыл бұрын
I have champagne khaki king. I wore it on the bracelet since I bought it since I hated the leather strap that it came with. Few months back I treated myself to Marathon GSAR and stopped wearing Hamilton. I started watching House MD series and noticed that House is wearing Khaki King in the original leather strap. Figured I give it a go. I worked that strap for 2 days in my hands to soften the leather since it is thick and extremely stiff. Now I can't stop wearing it again! Switching straps does the trick for sure!
@bt37504 жыл бұрын
Funny, I have the same watch and came to the opposite conclusion. I'm going to let it go. My issue is that there just isn't enough contrast between the hands and dial. Otherwise I love it. Super thin for an auto and 80 hours power. OEM strap did start out really stiff tho.
@whatsstefon4 жыл бұрын
I love all my watches, and a new strap definitely makes a huge difference. I only really have a small collection of affordable watches, and one semi affordable Laco. I love the leather strap it came with, but I’m thinking of changing it to more like a raw suede leather that will look great distressed and worn out in a few months time.

The blue speedy triple-date 3523.80 was on my list for the longest time since I saw it on forum about two years back, got it through a trade a bit over a year ago and always loved it. Recently the collection has shifted quite a bit and a speedy pro has joined, and I just don't feel the same way about the triple-date anymore. Sure, it was one of my nicest watchers at the time and my dad told me never to sell it, but time has changed, my collection evolved, and at the end of the day I'm the one wearing the watches, not anyone else. Just finally made up my mind and sold it yesterday, hoping that it's found a new home

Step 4 is the most important one for me. Watches are instruments in the first place, after that things of beauty. Because of that I need specific watches for certain areas. I'm going to swim today? I pick up my SKX009J1. Or to the gym? It's the GWM 5610-1ER with the Black Bull Bar. A wedding or classy appointment coming up ? Putting on the Junghans Max Bill or I buy a nice Orient Bambino that perfectly fits my suit. And if I like a watch outside my possesion better than my current one in the same category, I simply swap them. For that reason I always have a certain amount of watches, some I wear more often than others, but I never own too many.

I like to try them out a few times, change the straps, etc. Then if I don’t have that connection I take them into work, put them on a filing cabinet and leave a note saying “free, enjoy!” and my staff get them. I think a few of them have gotten into the hobby that way. A few have presages from my collection now, some got old Invicta divers (the gateway drug for so many collectors) Seiko divers, etc. That’s grown into an interest in timepieces for many of them and I like the idea that they may have not been introduced to the hobby otherwise.

Since I bought an iwc big pilot watch I haven’t flipped Sold or bought anything else. Well just the annual calendar iwc big pilot. So I’ve two now. Spent a fortune over the years. Great video and I do think when we find the right watch it’s hard to get rid of it. Or maybe I got lucky in the end. The Iwc big pilot is the right size for my wrist and the straps are stunning. It’s a beautiful legible dial and the 7 day movement is epic. Doubles up as a clock beside my bed at night. The 8 year warranty is also reassuring. I like that I don’t see many people wearing them and the two people I’ve met on my travels wearing them have both had chats with me. Was an expensive road to get here however. I’ve bought and sold literally hundreds of watches over the years. I’d be too embarrassed to list them all here. Thanks for sharing your thoughts I love your channel and I watch all the videos.

I’ve never sold a watch. The watches I’ve owned either still tick to this day or they had a catastrophic failure of some description. I’ve shattered crystals, I’ve sheared springbars, I’ve had batteries explode and ruin the movements, and I’ve even torqued a lug off of one unfortunate Casio.
@SWatchik4 жыл бұрын
Lol not only am I having this debate over some of my pieces, but one of them is the same Hamilton but with steel case and silver dial. My first automatic watch, and I do love it, the lugs are just a little too long for my taste and it doesn't get so much wrist time anymore. Whenever I look at the prices they sell for though seems to make more sense to keep it, despite not being worn a lot.

Here is what I do if I am considering selling a watch. 1 Yes wear it for a solid week playing it up and down with straps. 2. Look for any overlap in my current collection. 3. Put it away out of sight and out of reach for a solid month. If I do not miss it during that month, I move it along. Just be cautious of being too quick to sell, make sure it isn't one you will want to rebuy.

@cptnzippy4 жыл бұрын
Hamilton is a good brand, but value on a quartz watch is in the utility...if you like it, and you’re going to wear it, great. Being quartz, know that for resale down the road, it will be less than a similar auto. Collectors in general don’t value quartz which could mean that it’s difficult to move. I have a TAG quartz chrono that I bought when I started out...nice watch I don’t wear...and really can’t sell...that I paid too much for.
