More and more people seem to be coming forward with gel allergies and I am one of them too. After a SEVERE allergic reaction, I was left with mere stubs for nails (a few peeled back 3/4 of my nail plates). Since nails are an important part of my self confidence(crazy, I know), I decided to try press-ons doing exactly what you are doing. No more allergies and none to the glue (so far). I also use sticky tabs along with the glue. It's so important that we research any products that we use on/in our bodies. Thanks for speaking about this and bringing awareness ... great video.

Thanks for sharing your info for doing DIY press-ons, Marla! I had been thinking about it for a while... I don't have any gel allergies *yet*, but it's something I worry about. The plusses are overwhelming... never a sub-par result due to a non-dominant hand doing the work, being able to gently remove the press-ons-and reuse them-instead of drilling/soaking off designs that took a lot of time to do, being able to switch out designs quickly and easily, and still using all of my favorite nails and polishes. Snagged your recommended supplies for press-on painting, storage, and glue tabs, now it's on to then next part of my nail journey! 😊

I so agree! I didn't think of press ons before and stopped doing gel out of paranoia. But now I can resume my hobby again with some peace of mind! The ease and quickness of painting on tips vs actual nails appeals to me too. It's game changing! Reusing tips also means less product consumption and saving money in the long run. It's win win win all over!!

I was using builder gel and gel polish for a year and a half with no problems, then all of a sudden i had a terrible reaction, my nails separated from fingers and the skin around my nails was peeling, red and itchy. Removed the product asap. It took about 8 months for my nails to grow back in attached. I gave Hema free builder gel and polish a try and am happy that it has given me no problems after 10 months.

This video came in at a very interesting time for me. I have recently had decided to solely use press ons only. Partly because of the fear of allergies but more importantly it's because more research has come up about the UV lamps causing skin cancer. I have had skin cancer in the past and I just don't need to have an added risk. You have been my inspiration to look at new and beautiful alternatives and press ons are the way to go. I like the storage containers you have. Thanks! ❤❤❤❤

I have been using all of my gel polishes to make press ons for about two years now due to gel allergies. I love this since I don't have to worry about having a wonky mani on my non dominant hand, and I can have spare sets of nails available to wear at a moments notice. I use nail glue to attach them, and with good prep get 3 weeks of wear out of them. If I know I have an event and want to wear a longer than normal nail, I use tabs and get a few days wear out of them.

I started dipping press-ons around Christmas time and haven’t looked back. It’s sooo much faster and I feel like it’s actually helped me be more creative. My cuticles are so much healthier without all the shaping and filing. I will usually do some filing before applying them, then I go in and lightly touch them up before top coat. I’m starting to get back into using dip topcoat instead of gel too, because this stuff freaks me out so much. The possibility of having issues receiving certain medical/dental treatments is the scariest part of all.

I totally feel u about the gel x nails and gel products. I noticed my nails started to thin out and just deteriorate since I started using gel. I’ve completely stopped using it underneath my press ons although I still use a gel polish but I’m careful not to get it on my skin or I wipe it off right away. My nails just can’t handle the gel. I’m still in to dip powders though. But I gave my polygels away to my sister who doesn’t seem to have a problem.

I've done press on nails off and on since the 90s, but the longest I can go without one popping off is usually 4 days, even with all the tricks to make them last longer. I recently started doing polygel at home and builder gel so I could have nails that last longer, but now I'm getting paranoid about developing gel allergies, so you've got me thinking about doing press ons again. I've always just done plain press ons and painted them myself with regular polish. I may have to start making some like you did in this video. I just hate constantly having to glue them back on!

I was wondering why there were so many press on nail videos from you lately. I respect your rationale for switching and it’s also good to encourage people to do their research. One question I have is why you don’t appear to file the nails to customize (or perhaps you prefer the long, square)? I also love the idea of press ons for cleaner polish/dip application as I always have bulk and haven’t mastered a clean, bump-free look.

I've never had an allergy due to nail products in 35 years. But I do have an unrelated chronic illness that can make doing my nails or removing dip powder or gel so difficult. So I decided to try press ons. So much easier! Easier to do it all with my dominate hand! They are so much easier to remove even with glue instead of tabs! I haven't found a set of tabs that fit my nails well, yet, but I hope to. Thanks for your insights and for such great content!

FIRST: GelX is a specific brand manufactured by Apres. The general product is full cover tips no matter what the tips are comprised of or how they are applied. You may want to consider re-releasing this video with a new voice-over that isn't speaking of a the specific brand name to avoid potential legal issues. SECOND: the problem is GENERALLY not with the product, it is with improper or careless application and primarily getting product on the skin which is not being completely or properly removed before curing, plus not doing correct product research on the chemicals contained in the chosen product line, you put a great deal of effort into educating yourself about the products on the market available to nonprofessionals and you know very well that the products from China are basically unregulated in terms of what chemicals they have in them and even what they state on the label is not necessarily true. Negative health effects are not confined to full cover tips and gel systems, dip flu is a histamine reaction to a product which is not being used in a safe manner too, reactions can happen from nail glue and the various chemicals in the adhesives in dip systems as well, and although less common due to the smaller percentage of DIY users, acrylic comes with its own prospects of causing a reaction. All reputable brands state that the product is not to come into contact with the skin and people not following this instruction is NOT the fault of the product or system it is flat out USER caused.

Within the last few months I had to stop using gel. My fingers would be on fire and I was scratching them like crazy. Then my skin started to peel. I didn't go to the doctor but started using Aquaphor, Neosporin for the pain. Then they finally started healing. I use oils all through the day and that seemed to heal them right up. I have thin nails and I have to have something on my nails so I use only dip liquids and luckily I've had no problems so far. I would try press on but I never can find wide thumb nails. Good afternoon! As you know, I switched to press-ons exclusively a while back. One reason was to avoid a gel allergy. Another was time. I suck at filling and shaping! I got really tired of 4+ hour manis that I still wasn't satisfied with. Making them on stands is so much faster and easier for me! I do then the same way you do, I work on one set of 5 while the other is in the lamp. It was such a game changer for me! And there are SO MANY advantages to press-ons. Unlike you, I don't use just the tabs, I need a little glue around them. I can feel them stretch a little if I press straight in on them and it drives me batty. If it's just for an evening, I can deal with it, but I wear them full time, so I use a little glue. I've seen those little cases, I really like them. I haven't bought any. Yet. 😅 Thank you, for the video. Love you, Marla!

Long time follower but first time posting. I'm a huge fan of your content ❤ I also started dipping and "graduated' to doing gel in recent years. I didn't go over board with too many manicures (out of sheer laziness and time constraints as well). I also didn't go crazy and buy a gazillion dip powders/liquids/gels. I also invested in super high quality Japanese gel (I stuck with one brand) and bought the brand's lamp. BUT, I'm still too paranoid about getting a life long allergy. I decided to take a break from gel recently and have been using nail polish instead. Specifically I have been using a brand called Dazzle Dry. IT CHANGED THE GAME FOR ME. It's a quick dry polish that dries in under 5 minutes, and it lasts for 7-14 days if not longer (the longest I've kept on a set is 12 days, just because I got bored of the colour, not because of chipping/wear or anything!). And they have a ridge filler that gives a "gel polish like" effect that I absolutely love. I've been enjoying the system so much, I may never go back to dip or gel! And removal is a DREAM! Swipe with acetone, like you would any other nail polish. It truly is revolutionary and amazing. Thank you for sharing your experience and thought process Marla. And thank you for the tip about making our own press ons! I may do that as I still have a bunch of dip/gel that I'd like to use, but I'm too scared to now with all the allergy cautionary tales flooding social media! What a genius idea! I think I'll stick to Dazzle Dry for my natural nails, and reserve dip/gel for press ons. For anyone looking for a nail polish alternative to dip/gel, check out Dazzle Dry! I'm so impressed with this product and bamboozled as to why it's not more popular. Applies and removes like regular nail polish...wears like gel polish...it's amazing!

Pretty pink! The only issue I'm having with press ons is that my thumb and index fingers have flatter nail beds, so the sticky tabs and nail glue don't fill in the gap. Good morning Marla! I am one person who ended up with chronic spongiotic dermatitis!!! It’s taken almost a year to finally get a diagnosis. It’s one of the worse issues I’ve dealt with in the past few years. 2 biopsies and a excessive amount of creams that didn’t work. Now I can finally be treated. Be VERY careful with what you use to remove your nails. I used acetone and ended up with chemical burns on my left finges. Thank you for your video on CAUTION!!! Have a great day 🌹

I have the same issue though prep doesn't make a difference. They will either fall off, lift and snag on everything, or the nail ends up jammed into or under my cuticle in a painful way. Glue is the only way for me. I'm experimenting with an air dry peel off as I've had contact dermatitis once from gel products already. I can still use some gel products but need to be super duper careful with gel products. It took two to three weeks for my hands to heal. I'm now sensitive to some nail glues too.

As a licensed nail tech, I have used hard gels for over 32 years without any of my clients developing contact dermatitis. This must be more for a diy person that doesn't understand how to properly use the products. I apply gel to approximately 10 clients per day, 6 days a week and I, like you, have never developed it and I don't wear gloves. I hate that you have experienced so many people that have had a bad experience but it's also why licensed techs that are constantly educated in the field have very little to no development of an allergy.

Hi Marla. Are you still using Danni and Toni products? That's pretty much all I use... Thank you for the video.

I haven’t used them in a while but yes! Those are semi-cured and it’s not links you can flood your cuticles with gel using them 🩷

To be honest you're right everyone should just do what they like but I should also warn you that press ons are bad too you can get nail fungus.

Press ons have a lot less risk with them. The nail fungus that comes from press ons isnt painful usually and is actually pretty easy to treat and get rid of. From experience reaction to gel is extremely painful. My fingers felt like they had been burned and it took like a month for my hands to stop being painful and heal enough to function normally.

I don't get the same enjoyment watching your fake nail manicures although I understand your reasoning behind the switch. Maybe you could do one natural nail manicure per week to give a rest to your nails? I am a fan of the "nibblet" length natural nails because I am active and need mobility. For that reason press on does not work for me. Problems with them...restrictive feeling, pop off frequently with any pressure, look thick, hold moisture underneath them (fungus magnet).

That’s the plan!! I’m not quitting dip, so don’t worry about that! I’ll have a nice mix of content going forward 🩷 thank you for your input!! I appreciate you!

just playing devil's advocate here ....what is to prevent the chemicals from the tabs leaching into your nails? nails absorb moisture ...glues and plastics leach chemicals which would then be carried into the nails with the moisture?
@MarlaKris
@MarlaKris Жыл бұрын
The idea is simply minimizing the risks. Anything you put on your nails/skin can absorb me cause a reaction. But products that need to cure are the most risky.

@@MarlaKris i stopped using biab because i was afraid my lamp wasn't properly/completely curing it. i have an amazon lamp that cures gel polish is the specified allotted time ( but i still cure it for an extra minute just in case) so i use dip base and activator then gel polish base and top coat. i would like to find a better removal method though ..i find acetone very drying to my natural nails...

I'm a little confused by the title of the video. So you don't want to use gel extentions? But you are in the video. Why dont you want to use the extentions? You talked about gel allergies, but you are using the extentions. Im so lost😂
