In spite of the potential issue I shared in today's video about dual credit, my daughter and I are both still glad that she did it and would do it again! Do you plan to homeschool through high school?
@deannapolaski94852 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing this! My kids are still VERY young, but my "plan" has always been duel enrollment in high school. I took soooo many classes twice because they were required in my public high school and college and I literally learned the same exact thing. I didn't want my kids wasting their time too. This definitely gives me a good perspective on long term goals for my kids, like aiming to teach everything I want to teach before they're juniors. Thank you so much for this!! My long-term planning brain really appreciates it!!

Great video. My freshman year of college I discovered, the classes were just review of my junior and senior year of highschool, so this did allow for my academic life to autopilot and my social life to excel. Although I did learn from trial and error, that partying was not for me. So for my high schoolers we are pushing forward with dual enrollment, might as well get the college credit. They will start to learn new material in their specific areas of expertise in their later years of college. The classes are so basic for freshman and sophomore because some students are so indecisive on a major.

I would love more videos about high school! I didn't even consider that the college classes my oldest would take via dual enrollment would be substandard. I think we all assume, oh it's college, and there will be a level of difficulty that you can expect. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for this video! Even though I graduated 20 years ago, so many of my friends dual enrolled because the college classes were EASIER than the high school classes. My parents encouraged me not to dual enroll. It that my daughters a lot HS age I’m. It sure what we’ll do but I appreciate this video!

Excuse me while I get on my soap box here 😉 the quality of many college classes have gone down so much. I have actually heard a professor say that essentially the easier they make their classes(in content, assignments and attendance requirements) the more in demand they are-job security. It’s gross, but not a surprise with our society. I also feel like that is just the tip of the iceberg, but I will spare you 🤣

On the other hand, if they make the exams too hard and/or give heavy workloads, students will give bad evaluations and tell their friends to avoid that class, which will get the professor in trouble with the school. Some teachers really do just suck tho. My (Master's) advisor doesn't give a damn about teaching, he spends all his time running his (failing) company, and only shows up for less than half an hour out of his 3-hour lecture, which he'd already switched to online for his own convenience. We, the TAs, get to teach the rest of the class, as well as additional office hours. Then he acts all surprised and offended that students are giving him low scores.

It depends on the institution. We have kids in college who got a pass in high school due to covid. They know nothing while they supposedly "passed" pre calculus. Now we put them back in beginning algebra

Good Morning! New subscriber here and so far your channel has been a blessing to me. This is my first year homeschooling and I’m starting out with a 9th grader. To say the least, I’m a bit overwhelmed! I don’t feel prepared, I have no background in teaching and I fear failing my son. Finding videos specific for new homeschooling mamas starting out in high school is simply not there. Unfortunately we don’t have alot of time for trial and error to see what works for us since we are starting out so late but I do hope you’re about to make some videos about homeschooling high school.

Don't give up. It is overwhelming and I'm not sure that feeling fully goes away. It is worth it because you'll be pouring it into your child, a very worthy investment. If we are a product of the Public school system ourselves, we are unprepared to teach our kids because we were not taught well ourselves. We learned to memorize facts to pass the tests in school, not to learn enough to get the facts into long-term memory. You'll have the curriculum to do the teaching and many of the facts you've forgotten will quickly return when you review the curriculum yourself. Homeschooled kids do far superior to public school kids in being prepared to handle the rigorous study at the university level; homeschool kids are independent learners, not requiring to be spoon fed from the teacher nor to be entertained by the curriculum. There are some good books out there to teach your teen excellent independent study habits that will serve him or her well with the rest of their education. Don't learn in order to pass the next test, but learn by getting the knowledge into long-term memory: keep the standard for learning high. In public schools, kids depend on the teachers to guide them. As a homeschool student, instead can offer the tools for the student to guide themselves. There are books on how to approach reading difficult books; how to read and interpret literature or research report; what components should be included to make a well written paper; etc. Public schools give students fish to eat for the day, in homeschool, you can teach your student how to fish to last them a lifetime. It's a matter of curiosity and keep in mind, what tools does my student need to understand, interpret this curriculum and then effectively communicate it (verbally, written)? As a teacher, find the tools your child needs, and let the curriculum do the teaching of the content. One thing that gave me peace of mind is obtaining several curriculum agendas (what subjects and content should be covered each year). Organizations as Core Knowledge, Common Core State standards, etc is a start; local school districts will also have standards they go by. This helps in knowing there will not be gaps in learning content. At 9th grade is a wonderful age to introduce subjects that will serve him or her well in college. Logic (both Traditional and Material); forensics or rhetoric to learn how to gather/organize facts and defend a position; have a strong worldview (philosophy or moral code to live by); critical thinking skills. If going into a scientific area, learning research principles (what makes a good research study, what types of studies are there) and basic statistics will put him or her far advanced to their peers. If they have a profession they are interested in now, obtain college textbooks for your child to study now, even if it's just for fun. As a homeschooler, time is flexible. Find opportunities in the community for your child to get hands on experience in their area of interests, in the long run it could save thousands of dollars in college classes only to discover the area of interest doesn't suit them in the long run. Finally, depending on the curriculum you are using, if you don't know yet, you need to know how to create a transcript and give quarterly grades.....lots of KZbin videos on that.

Thanks for the insight! I really do think it is college specific. Now because of CV19 many more rigorous colleges and universities are opening up their online enrollment to the entire nation. I'm think that is the route I will take. I am also going to focus on more specialized classes for dual enrollment and CLEP the basics. That way I can choose how to teach basics. I'm okay if we only come out with 6 to 12 dual credit hours. My son's dream school is pretty competitive so they really don't take many outside credit hours anyway. And if he ends up at one of our state schools they will take the CLEP credits.

I graduated college in 1985. While in college I found most of the first year was a rehash of honors HS information. I remembered thinking, no wonder Freshman drink, party and skip classes. Freshman year of college was a repeat of HS. I spoke to college kids in the nineties and mid 2000s and it had not changed. Me, I floated through high school due to home issues so it was all new for me. You could have had her take free CLEP classes with free testing and homeschooled her covering ideas and topics you both felt were important and interested in.

Dual credit and enrollment is not the same. One is at the college taking the college course, and one is at a high school that’s partnered with a university that would be supplying the college transcript

Thank you for laying it out there. I needed to hear that. My twin daughters are special needs, and I have to admit I have felt some pressure about having them do dual enrollment courses like a star homeschooler would do, but it just wasn't going to work with where we are at. College is not off the table, but right now, my husband and I are just going to enjoy them. We are not in a hurry, especially right now in our country. May I ask if the college where she took her dual enrollments was UK? I remembered you're a "Cats" fan, and my husband and I graduated college from UK, so I was just curious.

That's too bad. Is there a way to preview the classes at all? I want to compare different options (going with the local community college would be free, but some Christian colleges that we'd be interested in also offer online dual credit that we would pay for, they're still a good deal). The idea of 'losing' 11th and 12th grade is something that I'm concerned with too. I feel like the curriculum we use so far is so rich and deep that taking a random college English course or something would be a huge loss compared to completing the culmination of a decade of a thoughtful and rich curriculum. So far we're hoping to use CLEP tests to enter college with a year or so of credits already taken care of, with a dual enrollment class or 5, to see what college classes are like.

Another great video Becky! I have a son who who just began his sophomore year of college. During his freshman year, he had a class that required him to interview an adult and he chose me. I was completely stunned at the questions he asked me. I told him I would be happy to answer these questions, however, your professor is not going to like my answers and I don’t want my answers to reflect his attitude towards you. I’m certainly not going to repeat these questions on here but they were so far left I simply couldn’t believe it. I am so thankful that my son was not influenced by this class and he stood firm on how he was taught on how to think from a biblical worldview. He couldn’t wait to get back home this summer so I picked him up from college in April. I asked him about his finals and he said he can take his finals at home as long as they’re submitted by midnight on the day they are due. I said to him, ”What in the world is that!” Again, I simply couldn’t believe it! Perhaps I am old and far removed with how colleges operate today. 😂

Appreciate other people's comments. Love the feedback of this video about dual enrollment. It's very timely and reflecting reports of others about the quality of University training today. There's the other aspect in that Universities are having to take students who are graduates of a failing public school system. Where Universities are faced investing a significant amount of time in remedial work just to prepare kids to take on University level work. As the previous commentary noted, all the more reason to have remedial classes be more challenging (not lack substance) to help prepare students for University level work. To complicated matters more, Universities have become an extension of promoting a woke Marxist agenda: critical thinking and independent thought is considered a threat to the movement. It's being very successful in this goal. Getting a quality education, where creating a professional population that can think critically comes second or third on their list of priorities. The colleges might be graduating exactly the type of professional they want, those who aren't too smart nor resourceful and who will follow orders: a Marxist leader would be well pleased with the outcome. Chose your University carefully.
@VoodooCrab2 жыл бұрын
Wow!!! What great comments! You know, it did cross my mind that maybe "they" push for dual enrollment at discounted rates to homeschoolers so they can start indoctrinating them. Just a thought I had.
@seekerbee44942 жыл бұрын
@@VoodooCrab I think the problem is complicated and will we really know the true agenda as outside consumers? It's an interesting proposition of offering Dual enrollment to reinforce the woke indoctrination happening at the younger school grades. I just know that every parent and teen should think twice about going to college, will it offer them a degree which requires that level of study (Medicine, Engineering, Computer science, Teaching, etc)? Next pick your school carefully: good universities are rapidly becoming extinct to the woke pressure. Even good schools can be infiltrated by progressive woke professors, being a product of their own university education, no school is immune to it.

I had to remove my sons ASAP bc they didn't feel safe and anxiety was so bad...so I'm new to dual enrollment. So, I couldn't get an answer for is, it seems like the English two or three in high school have to be honors only, in order for them to even qualify to take college English... is that true?
@everettjones6018 Жыл бұрын
To take college-level English in high school, it depends on the requirements of the high school and the college. The college probably doesn't care whether the previous high school English courses are considered "honors" courses or not, as not all high schools have the same course offerings. In my experience, a high school English sequence goes as follows: 9th Grade: English 9 10th Grade: English 10 11th Grade: English 11, AP Lang, or Dual Enrollment College Composition 12th Grade: English 12, AP Lit, or Dual Enrollment College Composition
