Back in 2019 I built my video edit rig, w I9 9900K, ASROCK Z390 Taichi, Nvidia GEforce RTX2060, Master Cooler MC500 case 2 fans, and while everyone else was pushing liquid cooling, I opted for the Noctua NH-D15 cooler. I was going to buy another fan for the case, but decided to see if there were any over heating issues. I edit 4K and always max out the cpu without any thermal throttling thanks to Noctua.

*I am still using a Cooler Master Evo 212 on one of my computers. The CPU never goes over 70°C under load. An AiO would cool the CPU 10°C more. It greatly depends on the airflow of your case, how well your thermal paste is, if you have a contact frame, how good your air cooler is, etc. I threw a 120mm 75CFM 3.75mm H²O static pressure fan on my 212 cooling tower. I dropped another 5°C.* *The highest airflow and static pressure fan you will buy is the Cooler Master Mobius 120P ARGB.*

As a long time  Mac person - and the history of liquid coolant leaks on the G5 PowerMac towers - I have never wanted to use liquid cooling ever again. So, this vid is a great reference and restores my confidence that for Windows Gaming/Creator builds ... air cooling can be a satisfactory solution. As always, your analysis, assessment and conclusions ... all quite valuable!!!

What I think it's happening with the noctua cooler at 700W is that while it initially handles the load well, the heat is just too much and overwhelms the heatpipes causing a dry-out and a subsequent poor heat transfer. So at ludicrously high wattages air cooler is out of the equation... that is unless you go IceGiant's Prosiphon Elite I guess? Anyways, nice video. While I won't need HEDT computers anytime soon, it is definitely interesting to see what the forefront of hardware technologies can provide.

AIO's are a mishmash of components and don't really reflect a true custom loop system. Also the coolant temperature in these makes me nervous and basically reduces its life exponentially... i cant remember the numbers but 40-50c coolant temp is the max before things go down hill pretty quickly be it the tubing, coolant or pump. The only explanation here is the surface area of Saphire Rapids and Noctuas engineering effort with this cooler... my guess it can be pushed to handle 1000W.

It's funny how these big air coolers are only rated for 250W on paper because back then we didn't have these kind of CPUs with dozens of cores and huge IHS. This heatsink could do even more in colder room with faster fans.

U14S is a great cooler that is under utilized now in my home. My wife that is no power user has it on her Ryzen 5600 stock. Pulled the extra ugly 140mm fan I had on it and moved it over to my new D15 dual tower cooler. Have 3x of those brown 140mm fans on it with the new 3rd pull fan properly gapped using the bigger fan pads that came in the U14S box. Noctua makes great coolers and I am slowly replacing all 9 of my home AM4 systems with them when i find them used/new locally for a fraction of the price. Bought 2 brand new D15 in the box one for $60 and the last one a month ago for $40. Overkill but the mounting method on them is so bulletproof that it's a pleasure to work with these instead of cheaper coolers. 3x D15 1x U14S 1x U9S 1x D9L Great coolers with a great chance most will continued to be used for the next 10 or so years as systems get upgraded.

Have had my Noctua NH-U14s in my previous 6700k build which was overclocked. Handled it with no problem. It's now cooling my 13900k. For what it is, it still holds up remarkably well even against the much more expensive AIO coolers out there.

Those thick rubber pads is to prevent fan turbulence noise from the fan blades. I experience that noise from a Noctua NH-D15 when I placed a fan at the backside of the heatsink.
@maozedowner5915
@maozedowner5915 Жыл бұрын
It seems like attaching the fan on the intake side will create this problem. I tried to reverse my cpu's fan direction so the fan blows air towards the right side(I run open frame pc so doesn't matter the direction) but I can hear a very audible noise when at about 50% rpm that way. The intake side is the side that's touching the heatsink in this configuration. I didn't know why but with this video I now kind of understood.
@JikoMuskato
@JikoMuskato Жыл бұрын
Just wanted to write just that. It just reduces the noise, which is why Noctua also offers some spacers für using in pull configuration on radiator fans.
@EliteRock
@EliteRock Жыл бұрын
That's correct - fans are always quieter if there's gap between them and the impedance they have to push or pull air through (ideally at least half the depth of the impeller, but lengths above that, to the point of effectively having a duct, will work). I've experimented with a reversed 14cm rear fan for a back-to-front CPU cooler (with a central/top exhaust), cut the frame off an old 14cm to use as a spacer and it did make the fan considerably quieter.

I used to use air coolers have only used AIO liquid coolers for a while. There is one thing I don't like about air coolers, if the temperature goes up they immediately have to spin up the fans. There is no reason for liquid coolers to speed up the fans until the liquid starts getting hotter. So you don't get the fans spinning up and slowing down as much.

I think you have basically presented that any sustained load over 500W will overwhelm NH-D14u? You have rather high ambient, 26, and my guess is if you left it running for an extended amount of time it would quickly rise up. That seriously limits your cooling capabilities. Also correct me if I am wrong, but aren't burst loads on the verge of causing heatpipe dryouts are much worse for the cooling efficiency? I remember reading somewhere, that load that ramps up over several seconds give HPs time to establish medium movement and provides much higher ceiling, instead of flash boiling it instantly. I actually am nervous about running my 2475X on full blast. I got diy loop, but single 360 slim radiator I carried over from previous build and it's already pushing to uncomfortable liquid temperatures (over 60 degrees), and it's stock with MCE. Second radiator is a must, or much thicker 360 or 480...

Wow I’m honestly more impressed how that 360mm AIO handled 700W for as long as it did. Literally if Intel spread out their silicon configuration along the IHS (like you said), the current Gen of Intel consumer products would have zero thermal issues and much more competition with AMD. It’s honestly depressing how little innovation has been done with the IHS from all manufacturers :/.Both Intel and AMD need to design a product that doesn’t require a de-lid and a custom loop for their unlocked potential.

I am in Las Vegas. In the winter or spring it might be 26. In the summer though it always hits 29 and on occasion it hits 30. I have found that you can't sit in a room for hours when it is over 30 centigrade. It has hit 48 and is regularly 47 outside in the summer, but you are not sitting for hours in that heat. I could get it cooler inside by turning the air conditioning down, but my electric bill would go through the roof. As it is now it is more than twice as high in July as it is in December.

I used the first Corsair H100 aio. Worked grat on a i7 BUT when the liquid in the aio starts to heat up it stais like that all day long. I prefer air cooling 'caz you can take in fresh air in the room and in 1-2 min the cpu heatsink starts to cool down compred to the liquid wich taked a longer time to cool down. That is my own experience with coolers. Oh...and no leaking on the air coolers. So it is alot safer. My last system had a 12700k 5,1GHz with a NH-D15. 22-24*C idle...55-60*C in full load.

W790/Server processors have so many cores to spread the workload across, plus the huge surface area of the IHS. That it's completely redundant to compare it to consumer cpus like the 7950x3D or 13900KS. As those will run hotter and you need to power limit to get lower temps on an air cooler.

Intel updated their drivers for Ark 770, you have any thoughts? Is it a good budget option to work with 13900k in the long run? Does 16gb Vram make a huge difference for blender and other development programs compared to other GPUs for same price? Another burning question I don't think anyone knows the answer to: Does it help PCs in general to have CPU and GPU by the same company?? The intuition is that the test engineers at one company would only be using same company components, if they can, leading to that combo optimization... If that makes sense idk.

@@jandkwhite6459 Why so many times? Reseating RAMs when the system couldn't post as well as troubleshooting if it's the ram slot that is faulty. And when you put such as large cooler in a case, getting to those clips are a lot harder especially when you have fans mounted on the top. These are coming from personal experience with a NH-D14. Of course when everything works as intended, any hassle would make zero sense
