Or, alternatively, you can potentially focus on your purpose if it’s easier to think about that instead. A mindset of “man on a mission” - it at least helps in cases where you are afraid of others judging you, which can also contribute to fear of public speech. I noticed it helps me to not care about others’ opinions and judgement (or convictions as a byproduct of judgements) by shifting my focus on the here and now and, most importantly, on the importance of what I am doing. What I am doing is too important to let others influence it in a negative way, so why should I even allow others to control it if it brings me more harm than good? I don’t know these people, so whose to say that what they think is relevant? Questions like that. As an example: you want to go to a gym to become healthy due to obesity. However, you always feel like others are watching you and judging you. Are you exercising because of your peers? No, you are doing this for yourself. Other people are irrelevant to your goal, and more than likely you are to them as well for the same goals: health and well being. As I said: you get into the mindset of someone on a mission that would not get deterred from the right path. If soldiers can carry out their missions and not care who thinks what because their mission is too important and it NEEDS to be done, then why can’t we?

It's so true! I always get nervous when I'm doing a presentation of 10min for an exam. But I deliver lectures of 2hrs without any problem. I always wondered why & I think I found the reason. When it's all about others your nerves are calm but the more you focus on yourself you get nervous!

Looking in the comments, I'm glad this advice worked great for some people. I, personally, really don't care for it. So this is a reminder to my fellow mentally-ill folks to not shame yourselves for struggling. And remember that no piece of advice will work for everyone and that's okay. I recognize that there's some truth in his message and I absolutely do think it's important to improve your communication skills. And most people aren't judging you for the little things you're stressed about unless you make a big deal out of it. However I just want to point out a few things. First of all, this information is presented as sort of a cure-all, life-changing lesson that applies perfectly to everyone who fears public speaking. It is not as simple as waking up one morning and realizing you've just been really selfish and you need to care more about people. This leads to my next point: *shaming people for having fears, insecurities, and anxiety often makes things worse*. As someone with multiple anxiety disorders, I have tried to "just stop worrying about it" and tell myself I'm being selfish. But once again it is not that easy. I ended up STILL being anxious, but now with the belief that I'm a bad person who doesn't care enough about other people, as well as thinking there was something wrong with me because I was still scared. I don't like that this video so directly and assertively tells the viewer that they don't have good enough intentions. I care so so much about serving other people, but my gut response to that pressure is to think I'm not good enough to be of service. I'm not worthy of the responsibility and they shouldn't trust me to do a good job. Using "tough love" on someone with these thought patterns is a recipe for disaster. So y'all, be kind to yourselves. Definitely serve others and work on yourself, but don't invalidate your own feelings in the process. K I'm putting the soap box away now, have a nice day

I learned a long time ago I was in a professional association for administrative assistance and served as president of a local chapter for four years and then moved on to the state level for two years. The thing I took from that was it’s not scary to run a meeting because all you’re doing is presenting an agenda and other people are doing the talking. So that was easy. But when you get up in front of everyone at least in that type of venue. There were probably 150 people in the room, but knowing that they want you to do well made a huge difference in my self-esteem.
