Yes, this is how the Filter knob works on pretty much every RAT and clone (it's wired "backwards" inside, unlike the Tone know). Thanks for the vid

Good to know! Maybe I'll open it up and wire it back to the "normal" direction. Then again, I might experiment around with the potential meter to allow it to open up brighter. Or I'll be lazy as the max setting is quite doable currently.

The behavior of the Filter control looks correct to me. As far as I know, it is wired to work as a cut, not as a boost.

Yeah, the brighter setting to the left isn’t a problem. The filter knob has always worked that way. Think of the filter knob as more of a high end roll off. The higher you go, the darker it gets. As for it not being bright enough, maybe Joyo voiced it a bit on the dark side? An actual Proco Rat is pretty bright.

I just got the Joyo Splinter myself about a week ago and love it. I have never played a RAT either but this pedal fit my needs for a distortion pedal. I will not be looking any further, I found my distortion pedal with the Splinter. I dont see the filter knob as being backwards as it goes from bright to dark and actually turns into a muff the darker you go, makes sense to me and for the price, if you can find one right now, its great. I enjoyed the video, good work!

I feel the same way too! But that's what I said when I bought my last distortion pedal...

If you keep the diode switch (MOSFET/stock) in the middle, it bypasses both sets of diodes and it works like a clean boost, just using the op amp to amplify and clip the signal. This is what the clean RAT setting on the Duecetone does as well as the LA Metal. It works great for low gain, smoother tones.
@juanvelazquez24232 жыл бұрын
Hey, does that really work? I've got this pedal and hadn't tried that yet. Does it change its sound very much?
@BlueBarrier7822 жыл бұрын
@@juanvelazquez2423 Yes it does work, and yes it significantly changes it's sound and volume. The pedal basically becomes an op amp boost at that point if you keep the gain low. As you turn up the gain, it will work like the Solo and LA Metal pedals by using only the op amp for clipping. In short, it works best if you use it to drive an already crunchy amp into more distortion or you can use it for smooth bluesy leads.

I have the Joyo splinter and it's a good little $40 pedal but comparing it to a $250 pedal that has 9 Rat circuits built into it is a pretty massive stretch. The PackRat is hands down one of the best distortion pedals I have owned. It seems like you might have made this video without ever getting the chance to play the PackRat and trust me when I say you are really missing out because it is freaking fantastic!
@PedalRebel8803 жыл бұрын
I'm definitely missing out. It isn't easy to get JHS pedals from where I'm at. I have the PG-14 and it is my main go-to :)

It's a low pass filter! As the name suggests ;-) It passes the low freqs through while progressively cutting the highs. Good demo, thanks~

Cool video man!! I decided to get a packrat to check several sounds of rat pedals. This pedal is pretty cool but I though there's a lot of noise when passing half of gain. Keep it up!!

This one sounds more like my 80’s smallbox Rats than the JHS, the JHS was disappointing and just didn’t sound accurate or right. This one sounds closer, still not all the way there, but better than the JHS and for A LOT cheaper! Great demo too :)

@bobibobik59032 жыл бұрын
Jesus you can play so good and shred! Wow, i'm not trying to bashing the JHS but it's not exact same sound of 9 rats, it is digtalish pedal that is getting close to some rats. So Joyo for me is real homage to the rat with nice twist and price is great.

Very good mindsetting from you, if you are on a budget, rather spend your money to a guitar teacher and visit the school of rock and find a Band where you can join. Material is not the most important, but music is!

I've had mine for a year and to be honest, I'm not that impressed.. To me it sounds to refined and splashy brite. I did replace the OP07DP Op Amp with a LM308N I had for years in my parts box and gave it more the unrefined Rat sound that it was lacking.. Still sticking to my DemonFX/Mosky Super Rat and Biyang mouse that I corrected the two resistor placements added a Motorola Metal Can LM308 Op Amp.. I've owned just about every version Rat since they first came out, if you don't use them over time it's easy to forget what a Rat is all about.. It can do more than the 95% turn it up and Thrash shit I hear on KZbin.. Try stacking two three switch rats together.. It's scary how well they can be controlled.
