Stairs could be put on the outside like so many garage apartments. But for the interior, leave from the exterior wall horizontally to the loft or from the interior to make a switchback which might make for steep stairs and still will take up interior space. There are so many craftsman homes around here made in the 1920's bungalow style with 2nd story lofts. Oh the beautiful trim and detail they put in them! Dormers could make for more stair space amd light as well. Boy, lots of work and money. Thanks for the videos. Makes me think.

Do you have anything on building UP, adding UP space so you can have a home office? Structural engineering stuff to add a story or 1/2 story?

I do not and have been planning for least a couple of years to either write a book or make some videos, just don't know when they will be made.

Put in stairs at a 90º angle with a landing part way up? Good video.

That could work, but the floor would need to be redesigned and you could still end up with a stairway headroom problem.

I would love that too. I have a 16x20 garage I’m thinking of renovating and I’m trying to do the loft on both sides and dormer the roof with a 44” spiral staircase essentially in the middle of the first floor leading to the second floor at a split.

What about the support beams? Wouldn’t that lowered loft take those away? Also, why not a ladder? Easy, cheap, and doesn’t take too much space
@gregvancom
@gregvancom 5 жыл бұрын
Support beams might require additional concrete footings under the posts that are going to support the beam and I would imagine you could use a ladder in some cases. Your local building department might require a stairway.

I think you can add a dormer to most roofs, but they usually require additional structural support and I don't currently have any videos about that process, but hopefully will be making some in the future.

@gregvancom
@gregvancom 3 жыл бұрын
@@brianhudak4610 Usually you don't need to reinforce the opposite side, just make sure you have structural support beams or double or triple up the roof rafters under the walls for the dormer, if that makes sense.

My city requires a height of 15 feet from the ground level to half way between the peak and eave. I wonder how high the walls could be to fit in with those requirements? I'd like 10 foot ceiling height for the first level. How high could I go for a loft?

I'm wondering why you didn't reference putting the staircase flat against the front side of the loft, ending in the center area? This would give headroom as you get to the top, and also give you more room for car/equipment storage.
@gregvancom
@gregvancom 4 жыл бұрын
Good point, if you have a better place for the stairway, then feel free to put it there. I'm guessing I didn't put it there because it might have a problem with the stairways headroom clearances.

I am thinking about adding a stairwell in my 2 car garage. My stairs to access the attic that fold up is already close to middle of the garage on the furthest wall. I was thinking of building stairs there and walling it in the attic on both sides to add a door above garage. I have rafters that will need to be relocated to the sides and drywall, flooring and electrical installed. I have been thinki ng this out for close to a year or so. I haven't measured but I have atheist 8ft at the peak above the garage, by the time drywall is added the room will be small squaring it up to around 250-300 square feet. This will be great for a bedroom addition. I'm thinking maybe less than 250 the time a closet is added also. If there are any ideas or suggestions I'm all open ears.

OR YOU CAN JUST USE A VERY GOOD STURDY LADDER !!! PROBLEM SOLVED! ANYONE SHOOTIN' AROUND IN A GARAGE THAT CAN'T GET ON A LADDER.....DOESN'T BELONG IN THE GARAGE! THEY SHOULD STAY IN THE HOUSE....WHERE THEY WON'T HAVE TO "DUCK". (Unless of course your wife is in the habit of throwing things because she can't go in the garage) PLAIN AND SIMPLE. PROBLEM SOLVED!

Old days lead to disabilities. Ladders may not be possible to climb, and yes even stairs. There is new technology that allows for automatic stair travel. Ladders on the other hand ... Not so much.😕

Rather than a ladder, use alternative tread stairs hung on a French Cleat. Take up half the run and you can walk up or down instead of climbing

I wanna make maybe a second story loft/bedroom for my 6 yr old - kind of inspired by tiny house style )our home is all one story and barely 3 bedrooms) like it was definitely barely the sq ftg our real estate agent recommended for our 6 ppl family - my oldest daughter really wants her own space i figured maybe a 6ft room ( we are all under 5’ 3” this should be no big deal for us) and thats just to give space for future people but i mean they sit on their butts in BED rooms thats what BED rooms were built for back in the say anyway lol so i am hoping this would be simpler/cheaper than pouring foundation on the outside and trying to build on a room idk tho

@gregvancom
@gregvancom 5 жыл бұрын
The only problems I could think of would be if someone was injured in the result of a building code violation or if it would become an issue when selling it to the next property owners.
@dudeicle4306
@dudeicle4306 5 жыл бұрын
@@gregvancom I agree the injury thing would be awful. But codes and permits seem so conveluted and arbitrary sometimes. Makes me feel like abiding by the codes might be more of a pain than just paying a contractor to do the whole job. Besides I will likely way over build the loft so it wont be going anywhere. But yeah I will probably find a balance between codes and DIY guess work
