I am wanting to do the same and convert it to a small apartment with an economy shower/sink/toilet. Plumbing and electrical will be the hardest part. The bottom part of the garage will be mine but the top part will be rented. Hoping to wire up an electrical panel into the top part to give it it's own power bill/meter. I was wanting as an extra space for my mother to live in, as she always bounces around where she is living and it would give her a space she could call her own for next to nothing.

They are used a lot in floor framing.

should there be more than one row of blocks on the floor joists? Also for sheathing the exterior walls, is it necessary to have the gable end studs in line with the wall studs, so that your sheathing would overlap to create a stronger tie. Thanks for the great content.

Floor span blocks are usually needed every ten feet and exterior sheathing and siding might work better when wall framing studs line up between floors.

If I was going to do a project like that I would remove the roof and then build new addition. Raising a roof like that might be to time consuming and dangerous.
