I own a garage door service and installation company in LA. You need a Liftmaster 8500 jack shaft operator. You also need to convert your door to a "high lift". This will raise the tracks up within 6" of the ceiling. To do this you will need longer cables, tapered drums, a couple pieces of vertical track, some flag brackets, and possibly some new springs. This will allow you to use the lift with the door open.

Biggest Problem I've had with the jack shaft Liftmaster is the remote has zero range. You literally have to be on top of the door for it to work and the manual states one car length range. Funny how the standard Liftmaster door openers have a good 100-150 foot range. Have never understood why this is.

Have a really tiny garage here, had to put the lift outside on a slab, but felt uneasy with a 4 inch slab. Jackhammered holes and drilled 4 foot holes with the Bobcat and filled with concrete and have a cage with galvanized threaded rods sticking out. Lift works great and doubled my car storage space! Put a aluminum carport as a roof.

+Ed Waggoner Sr. (Papatch) As said before, a jackshaft opener is needed. BUT, you also need to change to a hi lift door. The hardware (Rails, drums at the end of the torsion bar, etc.) need to be changed. Not expensive but the right parts are needed. Then your door can go up near the ceiling.

Brian I think the best option for your garage door opener situation it to change out your door track to high lift track and for your door opener I would go ahead and use a Jackshaft operator as for brands your best option is probably a LiftMaster Model 8500 there for you can utilize your existing remote controls for your current openers. If you have any questions you can seed me a message. I do garage door and opener work as a side job I also know people who can also answer any questions you may have on this.

Having not a year ago purchased and installed my own lift, I know that joy in your eyes. It really does change your life or work. Nice job covering the important things like concrete and anchors. I have a Greg Smith lift, 9VpV and I've had a 1999 Tahoe to a Subaru Baja up and it's performed well. Just make sure you grease the inner AND outer slides in the columns. If it ever sings you a whale song, grease the front slides/glides.

+Jmodderator Door height issue.. Jackshaft opener and high rise rails. This will bring the door up to the top of your ceiling where it will slide in from there at ceiling height. Jackshaft opener sets on the side of the torsion spring and cranks up the door from the side.

Your idea of adding another panel (door higher) is a good one I think, not only will it move everything up out of the way it will also give you more clearance to get higher vehicles in, and less chance of the door being in the way when open, working with the door closed can be unpleasant but if it has to be closed to lift the car high enough you don't get a choice in the matter

I bought a 2 post lift for my parents back in 2006.. It was the most amazing thing we could have ever done. But my dad is getting older now and he wants me to take it when I have a workshop to put it in because he doesn't really care much for working on his cars now. When they poured the concrete for the floor, they made the footings for the lift a 2 foot cube and added thicker re-bar to it. Works great! The only issue we had, was the hydraulic tank is plastic and wouldn't stay on the motor with all the fluid in it. So we ran a steel strap around the whole thing and never had a problem after that.

"I don't have time for you" I would have hung up and called the previous guy back and asked to be connected to someone higher above the previous knobend who said he didn't have time for someone who has HIS equipment. Hopefully he sees this video and the great job you've done installing it. Brian man, nothing makes for a better Sunday morning than some coffee and the white board. That wondrous gift from the gods has taught me more than 13 years of public school and two years of technical college. I'd L O V E to have a lift like that but with my gypsy life it'd be hard to achieve without as much as a house......... lol. Speaking of which. I have a question. I'm going to be taking my van ( '97 Dodge B3500cargo 360 magnum, 3.90 posi woo!) to the Banff mountain area for a month or so and I'm going to be spending time between a snow hut and my van. My living area is set up for -40 (celsius) weather but how do I make sure my van will start when I really need it to? It'll be idling about 4 hours a day maximum but I'll be unable to plug it in. I have a new battery that was the biggest I could fit with a cold crank of 850. Van's running excellent and starts great. Will it be ok starting in the early mornings without block heat when it hits -45? Sorry for the unrelated question (like always) but there aren't many people I trust with such an important question. I know there are inevitable winter preparation videos incoming but I may have set sail for the mountains before then. Thanks again for the videos and wisdom. Imagine how smart the world would be if everyone took the time to share the knowledge they've accumulated in video as well as you have. Keep up the good work and congratulations for your lift. Hard work pays off.

+Brad Nimbus You're welcome Brad! I'm jealous! That sounds AMAZING! There's no substitute for a block heater when it's -45C° Synthetic 0W oil helps, good insulation around the battery and engine compartment helps. A double battery setup helps (wired in Parallel), but that heat goes a long way. To make that happen an hour before starting you could do a small generator that can be started in advance, but at least your van isn't diesel right? What do you do? Are you a guide or a photographer? Hunting expeditions maybe?
@bradnimbus4836
@bradnimbus4836 9 жыл бұрын
+briansmobile1 Fantastic information Brian! I was considering picking up a small generator as a back up electricity supply in case stuff hits the fan. What could I use as an insulator? I do have several high wattage power inverters, would it be possible to plug the van into itself to warm up that heater before start? No diesel, petrol for this fella! I'm neither a guide or a photographer. I operate heavy machinery during the day and I'm a computer technician at night. I've always had an incredible thirst for adventure and when I'm not working or tinkering on my vehicles, I'm off in search interesting places I can explore. Banff is beautiful in the winter and I'm stoked to be able to spend so much time there on the cheap. Thank you for the tips. I'm going to look into the dual battery setup too. That'd be great for a high wattage inverter. Thanks again Brian!

I have purchased 2 lifts from Greg Smith Equipment. One for my son, like this one in the video, a 9000 lb lift (safely), they are tested to 1.5 times that. For my nephew we went up a size so he could have more width and height, as well as a stronger rating. The larger one has a brace bar across the top and no plate across the floor. I highly recommend spending the few hundred extra for it. We have been very happy with both of them. Life savers. Don't mean to sound like a fanboy, but that's how it is. New we spent 1800 & 2400, as I recall.

You get a kit to take that auto door operator rack and turn it sideways, using a pulley system and some steel cabling to allow it to fit almost all just above the door. You have the height there, and it also has an advantage that the door can be lifted from both edges, so it does not skew at all. Your door is light enough to do it. You might want to look at getting some IR outdoor sensors and put them on brackets front and rear and sideways, so that you have a very loud buzzer to alert you to the last 5 inches before convertible conversion time when lifting.

I put a bendpac lift in about 18 years ago in my garage. Same style a little heavier duty. I have about 11 1/2 foot ceiling in my garage. I just extended the track up a couple of feet and used one of those wind up springs in ft of the door and hugged the ceiling with my garage door opener. I can get most cars up all the way or at least be able to work under It comfortably. My sons use it mostly now to work on there cars.

Poured the concrete slab for my lift two weeks ago. Yes it was cold but not too cold as to freeze. I am close to two times your age so given the difficulty of working on the ground at any age imagine the grin that will be on my face once it's operational. Bought a 10,000# lift on eBay for a little over $1,600 with free shipping. The affordability is what sold me. I will need 14' ceilings to get my step vans high enough to work under. I'm very happy to join the brotherhood of lift owners, only wish I could have done it years ago.

As was said get a side mount, wall door opener. I've had all kinds and recently installed a wall-mount for a 16x9' insulated door in WY. It is - by far - the best opener I've ever had. They aret more expensive but will free the space to the ceiling. Make sure it has a tension release input which will shut down the motor if the cable comes off the spool. I've not had it happen but am told it's a huge deal. Excellent clip BTW.

You can move your garage door operator over to the left side of the door and attach it to the style on that side, that may be enough clearance for a car, hard to tell from your free space in the video, also that would be free. Or you could purchase a jack shaft operator that mounts to the torsion tube like mikeallenbrown suggested. Good luck, great videos!

Congratulations on your new used lift! My thoughts on your garage door predicament are, if you just need the door opener out of the way then a jackshaft garage door opener would be a good option. If you want the rails and opener gone then a roll up door (like a storage unit has) would be the most ideal. You just put the foam insulation in the doors so I imagine you will not be wanting to throw away your hard work and money like that. Having installed and decommissioned hundreds of lifts of all shapes and sizes (its my job) heres just a tip for folks who have to install in a building they dont own, or plan on moving from in the future. Always drill all the way through the concrete, so u can just pound down the anchors through the post plate or foot and through the concrete, and then fill the holes with quikrete, instead of having to cut them down. Makes it easier to move the posts as well as you wont have to lift the post up off the exposed part of the anchors. It also gives the shank on the anchor a little extra to bite on to. Another tip, 90 and 90 is what we call it in the business. Every 90 days, re torque your anchors at 90 foot pounds and I don't mean loosen them and torque at 90, just make sure they are at least at 90. The 150 or whatever the manufacturer calls for at installation is only needed at installation. Doing the full 150 time and time again after you've installed can tear up the concrete, and cause stress cracks, and once that happens, it has to be cut out and re poured to solve the issue, it's quite expensive. Stay away from lithium grease when you are maintaining your lift as well, as it attracts dirt. Use just regular red axle grease for inside the columns, and PB for the other bits and bobs (locks, arm pads, pulleys, arm pins etc) And the most important advice I can ever offer to anyone using a lift. ALWAYS use your locks meaning get the vehicle to your desired height and then lower the car onto the post locks . One, it could save your life, and two it puts less strain on the hydraulics and cables/chains. If the hydraulics go, and they do, the cable etc isn't going to save you, they are only really there to balance the load when lifting and lowering. Lastly, Yes the lift manufacture who made your lift are right assholes, even when it comes to certified installers like myself. I've had the misfortune of having to deal with them. Great vids, found you from ETCG, now subbed, sorry for the book.

Hey Great video Brian! I am actually getting a scissor lift 3 ton for 400.00. I need to do some checking of my concrete in my garage. I have a 30 x 40 garage with cinder block walls and concrete floor. How does a person know what tinsel strength is. 3,000 psi is required but not sure what mine is. Total weight of lift is about 850 lbs, much lighter than your 2 post lift. I am in the waiting game as you were and trying to analyze things to get the floor ready. I even thought of breaking up an area like 15 x 10 to set the lift on even though it dont take that much space. I just want to make sure I have the right strength of concrete and the proper set up area. You are probably really enjoying your new lift by now Im sure.. Way to go man!

briansmobile1 All the residential slabs I've seen seem to have a warning cast into them or a steel placard affixed to them which states "Post tensioned slab. Do not cut or core." I don't know if it's a requirement to have some sort of label, however, so when in doubt, it may be good to seek the advice of a structural engineer. :)

Great video Brian, I'm sure there is a fix for the garage door opener and that would really add to the lifts capability. You have entertained and help me out many times, thanks much.

All our lifting equipment it on there own reinforced concrete pads which are 3 time deeper than the workshop floor and the anchor bolts where cast into the pads or piles so no heavy equipment goes straight into the existing workshop floor this ensures better structural stability. Before becoming a garage we were an engineering company so everything is done to last or over engineered.

Ok.. Well, I am one of those that really needed to see your video.. Just looking at lifts now.. I am not a mechanic, but, do some mechanic work, and do my own undercoating, etc.. And, I work on all kinds of stuff, so, a lift would be a very nice addition to the shop.. Didn't know where to start, other than I knew I wanted one like you have there, and I wanted to go above 9,000 lbs, because I have several Mini busses and a 10k tractor, etc.. I am finally building my building, so, 50x100' is the initial plan, may go 55 or 60x100, and have already decided 16' is the height for the little that it costs extra.. Nice during the summer, some disadvantages I am willing to deal with during the winter.. The lift is something I might have screwed up on.. One of those things I probably would not have researched to death like everything else I do.. Now, I know to pay a bit more attention and get ready for a second hand purchase quickly, or, have been hearing some comments about the overseas direct lifts.. Actually suggested by a guy I ran into installing a lift I saw and stopped to talk with... Thanks for the video.. I just scanned and saw your door video.. I am fixing to watch it.. I had planned on 12' wide doors, and at least 1 that is 14' tall. I figure,, your vehicle is 8' wide, if you go 10', that's only 12" each side if you don't pull all the way in, so, might as well have 2' each side... Cheers.. Let me watch the other video.. Not sure if you have others I should watch.. I'll cruise around a bit.

Speak the truth.. Once you put one in, you will wonder why it took so long. I scored a 4 post Ranger for 500 never installed.. but then needed a 2 post to separate my jeep/and frame. just installed it yesterday.. LOVE BOTH of them.. benefits and drawbacks to each.

Nice video Brian. At our shop we have a Direct lift 9000 lb and a 10,000. For only the extra few hundred it cost we should have went with both 10,000 lb. the quality difference and durability is quite obvious. So in your future planing I will suggest to look at them both. The 10,000 also comes with a 3rd set of body spacers, the short, a medium and the taller ones. They are both the A cemetrical lifts and I have had vehicles on backwards many times as well do several others that I know that uses those lifts. We had ours installed by Direct lift and the guys installing them did tell me that even though the design to vehicle facing front he understands that is not always possible and told me just to bring the vehicle back farther to distribute the weight. I'm not implying anything here but just passing on what I and others I know have done many times and what I was told when they were installed. They are great, That's for sure. I had the same smile for days every time I used them.

Good video thanks for sharing, for people interested in a two post lift keep in mind that the rating is divided Equally between the lift arms so an 8k lift can lift 2k per arm so an 8k pound vehicle could over rate the two arms where the engine is, and also keep in mind that lifts made in the US or tested at one and a half times they’re rated capacity, lifts made out of this country usually can’t lift their rated capacity safely, so over size the lift for what you need?

Concrete thickness is 1 part of that equation. Strength of the mix is crucial typically it has a large range of concrete strength. House slab is between 3000 to 4000 psi. You may want to get it checked to make sure it is in fact 3000 psi mix.

My garage has a super high door compared to the ceiling, and I had a ceiling fan in the way, so I didn't have room for the door opener either. What I did was mount the opener tight to the ceiling off to the side so it cleared everything. If you adjust the lift springs properly the opener will work even off center. My door is a 10' x 9' wood door. With a metal insulated you'd probably have to beef up the attaching point if you side mounted your opener.

If you want the release cables on one side you can run a small steel cable with a pulley on the floor that links to the far side release and bring it through under the floor plate and that way they will be on the same side

I’ve been an auto mechanic for 28 years and I’ve always been paranoid about a car falling while I had it on a lift so when I built my shop I had eight inches of rebar reinforced high strength concrete poured. I spent a lot on the floor and the 9000lb lift because I have 3/4 & 1 ton trucks in the air from time to time. When you get ready to build your shop you’re going to find that doing it right won’t cost you a great deal more. Actually, they bolt together like a big erector set. I’ve seen two vehicles come down off of above ground lifts and it’s enough to soil yourself. You will never be sorry that you’ve got more floor than what you need under you. Everyone has their preferences as to what lift they like. Mostly what you get used to.

Probably the quickest and most economical thing to do with the opener is to switch it out for the kind that goes on the end of the spring shaft on the wall above the door. That would be the least amount of door modification, which can get costly fast. Just be careful then about opening the door with a car on the lift. You could have the door tracks extended up so the door hugs the ceiling more, but that also would get costly.
