WATCH THIS VIDEO Before Replacing Your Nissan Oil Cooler Gasket - Xterra - Frontier - Pathfinder
It's easier than you think, BUT I still screwed up and had to order a replacement oil cooler stud. Watch this video and save yourself a headache!
Note. I did not show the process of removing the skid plate as mine was damaged and ripped off during interstate travel.

Just btw i understand that for torque wrench to accurate you have to hold it correctly holding too close to the socket will result in inaccurate torque based on on the leverage.

Good video. A couple of things I'd like to offer. 1. My Xterra had this leak and I did not remove the cooler assembly. I simply re-torqued the nut to 40 ft-lbs and the leak stopped. Not sure how long this will last but I've gone about 5000 additional miles with no re-emergence of the leak. 2. CAUTION: when you go to remove or re-torque the stud nut, be absolutely sure you are square on the nut and not cocked. If the socket inside wall contacts the threads and damages them, you will need to repair or replace the stud. Use a universal socket extension if you have one, to keep the socket squarely aligned to the stud nut. This thread damage happened to me, but I was lucky enough to notice and "feel" the oil filter spin-on resisting the stud threads and backed it off immediately. I was able to use a small triangular file to repair the damaged thread area on the stud and then used the oil filter threads as a sort of die cutter to slowly thread it on until I felt resistance, and back it off a full turn, then thread it on a little more, back it off, and do this several times until the filter threaded on easily. Be patient if you are in this situation. DO NOT force the filter on to the cooler housing stud or you'll strip the threads and be in for a world of hurt. A new stud is expensive!

seems like some are upset in the comments section about the gasket sizes being wrong and maybe this can help.. when I took my car to the auto shop for a quote they told me it could be one of two sizes for the same model year. So yes, You are likely to go back to a parts store (or 10) looking for the right one in the middle of the job.

I didn't have this issue. Both the one that I ordered from Amazon (linked in the description) and the one that I picked up from the dealer fit without issue. This is the dealer link: parts.nissanusa.com/p/Nissan__Xterra/Gasket-Oil-Cooler-Gasket-Oil-Cooling-Ring-Rubber/89437996/21304-JK20A.html

how many miles did your vehicle have before noticing the leak and changing the o-ring? Was it anywhere around 100K?
@DaveBuildsIt
@DaveBuildsIt Жыл бұрын
Around 115k - 120k. The oil cooler stud was also loose so that probably played a bigger factor in the leak than the oil cooler gasket but you can tell in the video that the gasket definitely needed to be replaced.

Who can I make sure that the leak is coming from the cooler gasket? I have a 2007 Nissan Armada LE. I being noticing a small oil leak near the area. Thanks
@DaveBuildsIt
@DaveBuildsIt 2 жыл бұрын
First, make sure the oil filter and oil cooler are wiped down and clean. It makes it a lot easier to track down the oil leak. However, I have read that indicates the oil cooler gasket should be replaced everything 100,000 miles as a maintenance item. I think that is a good rule of thumb.

@@DaveBuildsIt Hi question my friend , i need to drain the oil to replace the ring ? What happen if I remove the filter with out drain the oil ? Thanks
@DaveBuildsIt
@DaveBuildsIt 3 жыл бұрын
@@watchmanexpert Honest answer... probably not. Motor oil resides in the oil pan when it is not pumped throughout the engine during use. You may have to top off as an oil filter cold hold approximately 1/2 QT of motor oil. However, I would never recommend removing an oil filter without changing the oil nor would I recommend changing the oil without replacing the oil filter. Yes, it can be done. But go the extra mile and take care of your ride. You won't regret it.

Is there anything to do to protect the threads on the stud so you don't damage it Also is there a link for the oil cooler stud Vehicle 2006 Nissan Pathfinder SE V6 4.0L
@DaveBuildsIt
@DaveBuildsIt 3 жыл бұрын
To protect the threads on the stud, make sure you are using the type of six-point deep socket linked below. This provides a better grip when have to torque it down. Otherwise, just the fundamentals. Always carefully thread your oil filter by hand until hand tight and follow torque specs thereafter. The 4.0L V6 is shared between the Nissan Pathfinder/Xterra/Frontier so the part numbers will be the same. The Amazon link is correct (Part Number: B32573). That is the o'ring that I ordered and used during the first attempted installation. I verified the link and Amazon confirms fitment to a 2011 Nissan Xterra. When I picked up the stud from the Nissan dealer, I picked up a new OEM oil filter and o'ring because I didn't want to risk reusing a possibly damaged item. Both replacement o'rings were the exact same size and fit properly. I don't remember the OEM part number but Nissan parts knew immediately what I needed as it is a common part. I hate that you're having an issue with this.
