I loved this video! As a new beekeeper I appreciate the fact that you explained the reasons for doing things in a certain way. I found my hive to be queenless recently and I was all set to go get another queen. My mentor explained how we had time and resources we could get the bees to make another queen. Yes, it took a couple of weeks and a few manipulations but now this hive is thriving with a lovely placid colony and filling frames with honey so quickly that I will be harvesting my first honey this weekend! Thank you for this easy to understand presentation.

great advise. I have done it before. Put a queen in a "queenless" hive and come out later and she was on the ground barely alive. learn something everyday with the bees.

I appreciate you sharing your experience and what you have found to work and the why behind it. Including the almost mishap of not realizing you had a virgin queen. There is ALWAYS something new to learn. I feel I am still a beginner - 4 years or possibly 5 in now. Thank you!

Cheers Ronnie, very helpful. I have 2 hives that I am concerned about this year. Because of the poor weather we had in England right up until June the bees went crazy when the weather turned nice and one of my good hives generated 5 swarms! Besides your test which I will do, how long should you wait before being concerned, a month? and is there always a queen with them when they do swarm? cheers Jonny

have you ever see a nuke starting to build queen cells on your test frame? My (unfortunate) experience has been that it takes a very strong colony to build queen cells even on a notched frame with eggs and young larva.
@ronniedaniels4587
@ronniedaniels4587 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have seen them do it. I believe they will do their best to make a queen if they dont have one and aren’t a laying worker hive. I usually try to help them with a pollen patty. You make a good point though. It really helps to have a strong nuc to make a queen. When I do splits and allow them to make a queen, I do my best to make the nuc strong. Shake extra bees in the new nuc, because the foragers will leave and go back to the original colony.

How can you tell the queen is mated?
@ronniedaniels4587
@ronniedaniels4587 Жыл бұрын
There are a number of ways to tell. Usually her abdomen will be larger than a virgin queen. Virgin queens have skinny abdomens and can fly very well, where mated queens cant fly as well. But the easiest way I tell is just look for eggs and larvae. If i see eggs and larvae, I usually dont even look for the queen.

I am worried about robbers with a hive that is either queenless or trying to make one. ...lots of bees but they don't seem to want to defend... so curious if I introduced a queen it they will defend or just be killed off by robbers...

If you think they are being robbed, the first thing to do is reduce the entrance. Even if they dont currently have a queen they should still defend the hive.

@@ronniedaniels4587 Hi Ronnie, I have had it that way and even made it tiny , one bee at a time ...yesterday I accidentally didn't have the restricted all the way flat and more got in. I am nervous about opening and checking all frames.. but I have to get over that. I don't want to hurt it. Then I'll see what's there and decide, 1. re-introduce it back to the hive I split it from, 2. harvest all or most of the very heavy (was) honey. 3. try to make it go and get it through winder (or add a queen. I don't think they are defending it.

@@davidpatrick1813 Without seeing a video, its hard for me to give much advice. Usually when they are robbing, robber bees will be trying to get in everywhere-the top, cracks, etc. one thing I have noticed is when a hive is being robbed and you take the top an inner cover off, robber bees will come flying out. Also, look for wax cappings on the hive floor and landing board.

@@ronniedaniels4587 I wonder .. do you have a "website" that I can email etc. I sorta am shy about putting the email in this open... However, I came home (it's 4 now) and thought the front flying is active the whole bottom is open and I see no skirmishing or anything. I think maybe the opening was tiny and way more workers wanted to work than the restriction allowed. It looks great this afternoon. Also, maybe the extra air flight in front too maybe be for queen going and returning (if she isn't mated) ... but she might be. I saw her this am.. first time I have seen a queen live with my own peepers. Pics might show some larvey but not sure. I might not have been able to see inside the cells for eggs. I'll wait a week or two and see how it goes. I did see pollen barres the past few days.
