Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Congress during his first known trip outside of Ukraine since Russia invaded about 10 months ago. He delivered his remarks in English, where he thanked the U.S. for its help in the fight against Russia, and for "all those who value freedom and justice."

Sometimes, the simplification of a sentiment into a single, succinct statement, is enough to ignite a nation. Zelensky represents that sentiment every day. For the record, the quote initially appears to have been reported by an un-named US official who leaked parts of a conversation between the US Government and President Zelensky. It was then repeated by the Ukrainian Embassy in London on Twitter and has become legendary.

Many of them say Ukraine should give Russia territory for peace. To them I ask this: if we were invaded, would we give away chunks of America for peace? Hard to call the citizens or Ukraine free. Their government was installed via a violent coup in 2014. They are the second most corrupt country in Europe, right behind Russia. And shortly after taking power, Zelensky jailed journalists and media producers who did not cover his campaign "fairly." Yeah, another fun fact is that Russians are using the Ukrainian weapons that we gave up after we’d signed the Budapest memorandum. The Americans were the ones who oversaw the process. Back then we also had to destroy our missiles and jets, again under the American supervision. Then we had a few proRussian presidents who paid for gas with missiles that are now shelling our cities. I’m not blaming anyone except for us, actually. I just believe that we should’ve fought for our right to defend ourselves right after 1991 because Russia was doomed to be a threat for us. I was a 5 year-old back then. And I’m a refugee in 2022. Will push for Ukraine having a strong army for the rest of my life.
