Thanks for your reaction! Gerry Rafferty was founding member of the 70's band, "Stealer's Wheel" before he went solo. I know we were recently chuckling about the Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me Not To Come" in your recent reaction and that song reminded me a lot of Gerry Rafferty's song with Stealer's Wheel called "Stuck In The Middle With You". I would love to see your reaction to Stealer's Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You" while the Three Dog Night song is fresh in your mind.

Baker Street is in London. Excellent song. His name is pronounced Jerry RAFF-uh-tee. Scottish musician and great songwriter with a beautifully smooth voice. This was by far his biggest hit, but you should also hear "Get It Right Next Time" and "Right Down The Line". He started in a folk and comedy duo called the Humblebums before founding Stealers Wheel and then going on to a long solo career. Sadly he died a few years back. RIP Gerry.

First time I heard this song I was with my dad and the radio was playing. My mum entered the room to tell him that a family friend, a 22 year old woman, had been burned to death the previous night by the IRA. Then this haunting intro blared out. For years the song creeped me out. Yet I still enjoyed it! THAT is the mark of a great song.

Baker Street is one of the famous, old, expensive streets in central London. There is a station on the London Underground named after Baker Street. It happens to be the street where Sherlock Holmes lives in the stories - 221/b Baker Street. That's what most people think of when they hear the name. Gerry Rafferty had a friend living in a flat there when he was having to drive from Paisley in Scotland to London every few days for several weeks to deal with a legal case about getting out of his recording contract as part of a previous band without losing his royalties. So he'd drive several hours down the M1 motorway, deal with the London traffic, have to sit through meetings with lawyers going over all this stuff, all this pain with his bandmates as well as the label, and then he'd visit his friend in Baker Street and get drunk to cope with it all, before driving home again the next morning. I reckon maybe he was taking the Blackwall Tunnel under the river Thames, and that's what that first Sax break represents - coming out of that tunnel back into the light of day on the way back home.

My take on this song.. from the perspective of a young lady in her early to mid 20s who had moved to the city, thinking that's where she'd be happy, maybe find the right guy, the ideal career and go places and be fulfilled.. but day after day it didn't pan out.. instead the guy she loves is a player, doesn't want to settle down.. the city she thought was interesting and full of magic turns out to be cold and soulless.. her dreams circling down the drain, the lure of the city was just a delusion like an oasis mirage in the desert.. she decides its over, she leaves and goes back home.

No, I think you were right. But Any street in any big city. He moved to the city, thinking it was the right move, but discovering it wasn't him, too busy, too dirty, too loud, distant people... Still, he thought if he just stuck it out for just another year, everything would even out and he'd be happy, but deep down, he knew it wasn't him or what he wanted. He may think he's a "rolling stone", but once he's in the country - peace, a quiet little town, fresh air, clear skies, he'll change his mind. Let's hope he finally gets his wish and finds his peace in the country, after all, that was what was in his soul. He's going home. 🌲🏡🌲🌲

Raphael Ravenscroft is the sax player, but the solo was written by the song's writer: Gerry Rafferty. Rafferty's really only got 3 hits after this: "Get It Right Next Time," "Right Down the Line," and "Stuck in the Middle With You" from back when his band was Stealer's Wheel. I'd say that last one was his top song until "Baker Street" came out. BTW, I believe Ravenscroft is a Hufflepuff. Just a guess! ;)

Gerry was pretty clear on what the song was about, and it wasn't that. It's pretty autobiographical, and was about his disillusionment with London, and the music business after years of not being allowed to release music due to legal disputes over the Stealer's Wheel breakup. Gerry had a friend who lived on Baker street whom he would stay with when he was in London. Gerry was a big drinker, to a fault, and when he was in London, he and his friend would often stay up all night, talking and playing music. The line "You're going home" refers to him finally getting back to being able to release his music.
