The band really does make all the difference. My love of watches properly kicked into gear when I discovered the joys of ditching the bracelets for high-quality NATOs, and modifying them to be single-pass, when it better suits the watch. Plus, finding leather straps with a nice aged-finish and quick-change spring bars. Makes all the difference!

Thanks! This was just the info I needed to help me shop for bands for two new watches. There's one band that you didn't cover, probably because very few people use them anymore and that's the steel stretching or expanding bands. They were somewhat popular in the 70s. My dad is wearing the same stretch band on the same automatic that he bought in 1972. I once hinted that he might want a new watch, fishing for birthday present ideas. He said, "Why? This one still works." So yeah, he got a tie.

I really love the 2 piece "seat belt" straps i have stumbled across. I wonder why they aren't much more popular. They are comfortable and often look pretty nice (less dressy than leather but nicer than standard nato/perlon) and relatively inexpensive.

Canvas and nylon straps have the added convenience that when they get dirty, you can throw them in the wash with your laundry. They will come out looking new. One caveat: If there is leather backing, let the strap air dry.

Please give me your opinion about using nail polish (the kind that needs to be cured under UV/LED lights) to protect a steel watch from scratches. Also there’s something called Liquid Skin, but I’m not sure if that’s just an expensive nail polish. (I know that scratches add character but I’d still prefer to keep it unscratched). Thoughts?

I would say a pro of rubber straps is that they are easy to clean and if you get other styles of rubber straps they are grooved to be more breathable but even if you do sweat in them at least (again) they are easy to wash clean.

There is at least one additional style of watch bracelet available: The Bonklip-style bracelet from the UK. Also made by Krementz in the USA in the 1940's and later by Forstner. This bracelet is again available from josephbonnie in the UK and Forstner in the USA. These bracelets are thin, light, flexible and extremely comfortable. They do not have the mass or presence of larger link style bracelets.

Silicon is a chemical element, and used to make microchips (thus Silicon Valley), whereas silicone is a synthetic polymer, used for making soft cooking utensils, lubrication, medical devices, and watch straps... but great, comprehensive content.
