Anything with the great Rutger Hauer is a treat - a rare talent. He is missed by many. His memory lives on. Well done short 10/10. Makes you think about what make us...US, and what happens when our consciousness leaves our bodies or even what REALLY happens when we sleep or die. Only thing better if there was a part 2 to see what happens when the patient is in his new body.

@Chickens and Gardening I have wondered what I would do. What possible reason might be worth the teleport. What if I was going to TP to a space station around Saturn, or another star system, or to live in a wonderful place or something. How much excitement and interest in life I could give to my cloned self, who would remember me, being me, and still get to do these amazing things. In some stories, they are only TPing to go to work and stuff. booooooo lol

I'm fed up with it. All these half arsed artificial pseudo philosophies. And most of them have been done to death. If the story had other elements that are primary to hold interest and the pseudo theory could even be leveraged to add to the story it can work but if the entire film is just a presentation of a miniscule idea that hasn't even been developed it drops to the floor with a thud. What's further ridiculous to this scene is that it's the mental backup, supposedly taken to protect against failure to remove the tumor, that actually kills him. Hopelessly contradictory. No actual story. Just a half arsed germ of a concept someone had down the pub one day and never developed it further.

@@nihilistic7840 The mental backup is not a safeguard against failure of the procedure, it IS the procedure. And the question posed is: What is a human being? Is it an individual with intrinsic value to himself and others by virtue of his consciousness and experience and all the little unique bits and bobs and imperfections, or is it a cog in the machine, whose value depends on it usefulness and the functions it can perform? If the first, this was murder, if the second, he was saved. Forever and a day. But since it is both, this is at best a huge ethical dilemma. It is easy to see why you would want to preserve the mind of a genius, for the sake of his problem solving skills. And if he had a "brain tumor the size of an apple", copying it over into a clone was maybe the only way. His attempts at thwarting the process and the nurse's reluctance and grief illustrates the individualistic angle. If all he was, was his usefulness, he would rather die. Kind of like the people who refuse to let their organs be transplanted after they die, perhaps?

There he is...one of my all time favourite actors! When Blade Runner came out in Germany, i was twenty and made a copy from a VHS rental cassette to a Sony Betamax. It became even darker and more sinister, loved it! The times of Billy Idol, Sade, Robert Palmer, David Bowie...unforgetable and never replicable.

This is so appropriate for Rutger Hauer, as similar questions of existence and memory were posed in Blade Runner by Roy Batty and the other replicants. "Did you get your precious photos?" I love this type of existential examination, and it's so good to see Rutger again. What a treat!

Rutger Hauer. He's the reason I watched this film. An amazing actor! Thank you everyone who made his role possible. I would like to see a behind the scenes look at how he was brought into this project and any comments he has to share. This was a really big deal and a great surprise! It just seems there should be a little more in the making to top it off. That said, this was a great film. The director and cast did an excellent job in bringing the characters to life and making the story believable. Set design, tech, lighting, special effects, camera angles. I was like "Rutger I haven't seen?!?!?". Been a fan since I saw "Nighthawks" when I as a kid. Always wanted to see him and Greg Henry in a movie together. Also - iirc, Rutger was the kind of actor who would take any role that paid, just to be acting, kind of like Walken. And like Walken, always gave his all.

RIP Mr Hauer, who played a legendary android that helped influence the cyberpunk genre by leaps and bounds. This story is a solid existential crisis for modern audiences, and it reminds me of a Twilight Zone/Outer Limits episode where they proclaimed they'd invented teleportation to allow instant travel between worlds/stars, but in fact all they'd done is clone people at their destination while executing the original body to prevent doubles.

Very good. The story was concise and thought-provoking--like SF from 50 or 70 years ago. It asks questions (without actually asking them) that make us think about the limits of technology and our place in the universe. I miss stories like this. The acting was, obviously, of high calibre. The cinematography caught my attention, without taking me out of the story. I appreciate how it starts out with wider shots as we're introduced to the situation, and then slowly tightens in as the story becomes more personal--eventually being all close-ups of the 3 characters as they deal with the situation... only to pull back as the doctor returns to being clinical. Kudos to all involved.

God Rutger is such an underrated actor. He is phenomenal in everything sci-fi he touches. Even the low budget films would likely have never come to light, if it hadn't been for his consummate acting skill. This, however, wasn't just him alone holding the film together. Three superb actors giving stunning performances made this a compelling watch. Kudos to everyone, not just the cast, involved in bringing this to the screen and RIP Mr Hauer! Thanks for uploading.

A great % of these sci fi flicks are out dated somber; ominous; the ships are like WWII junk but can fly all over the Universe...(why not do like 60s movies that went minimalist with the ships and clothes? clothes are out dated; if there are aliens, they are gelatinous horrendous insects look a like; when show some kind of futuristic city is all junk; somber; low lighted and looks like an old factory from this era not from thousands of years after in other era and part of the Universe; or the cities and vibe are like those showed in the old Flas Gordon series; that was so dumb that there is no words. The technology is just minimal (but can have light speed ¿?) all look bad dirty poor lighting and somber; most look like decadents GI Joes; too much is based in the worst of this era; when there is a doctor; or scientist like in this case; well; like in the movie 12 monkeys...whoever can be one; most crews; or pilots or commanders are way too improvised and never will be that way; all seems like and look like an exodus; and a long etc. These directors cannot fly cannot dream; they make sci fi and cannot design a modern vessel; cannot dream with light and lightness; they only dream with somber and dark but even in these cases; the vessels out dated; the clothes out dated; the guns out dated; the reactions; too out dated; the scientists do not look like centered prepared persons; still think that all is based in wars or fights; what do we know about possible aliens? why to put Human feelings and actions? Yes; these directors cannot dream only copy sci fi like Alien the movie; or Blade runner or Star trek or similar.

you sell him so short! Roy Batty was no villain. Many of his characters weren't. At the very least, most were too complex to be contained in such a narrow category. That was his genius. Playing flawed, quirky, but ultimately lovable characters who often did bad things... for reasons. Don't hate the player, hate the game!

Rutger Hauer might just be one of the most overlooked actors of all time. His end scene in Blade Runner ( Tears in the Rain ) was heart wrenching. In his starring role in the movie Split Second was without compare. He was everything an actor should be. Villain, Hero, main charactor, or supporting actor. He never received the recognition he deserved. As the great Grandson of Josh Randall in the movie Wanted Dead or Alive he was absolutely perfect. One of my all time favorite movies. A crying shame we will never see him again.

While i agree with everyone else that it was great to see RH again, his superbly done, steady performance was not the only star in this sky... DeObia Oparei delivered a tremendously well performed and powerful character that tugged at the heart and soul remarkably hard in such a short presentation. I suppose it's brain could be controlling all of it's body functions still but without a soul or like the Doctor said, "we're all memories professor,, that's our soul". So one could say that our body is just a vessel for our soul. But Mr. Freeman is questioning the fact that would it still be me if my soul was put into a different body. At least Mr. Freeman had an exact copy of himself rather than some other body LOL This is what I mean, I need more information :)

In 'Blade Runner' Rutger Hauer played a replicant, or human replica, who said these iconic lines that he wrote into the script himself: "I've seen things you people would never believe.....All those moments will be lost...in time...like...tears in rain. Time to die." How fitting he plays a doctor treating a clone who now fears to lose "all those moments". Great film. Great actor. RIP Rutger.

This is similar to an old episode of the Twilight Zone or Outer Limits. They had invented teleportation. What they didnt realize was it digitized you and created an exact copy (including all memories) at the other end as opposed to actually transporting you. By the time you realize what's really happening it's too late.

But the creators of the technology would either know or, in the case of the episode I'm thinking of, they would figure it out and then have to wrestle with the ethics. In a different OL episode on this subject, an insider misuses the tech to create a copy of his wife after she gets badly injured and ends up in a deep coma. Surprise, she recovers and now there are two. What to do. I think that episode was called Think Like a Dinosaur.

For many reasons (seeing Rutger Hauer in what was very likely one of his very last roles, the actor portraying the dying man and the emotions he shows), this film made me cry. It's a superb and very sad short film.

With the whole shut him down thing and the brain tumor maybe its not the first time theyve done this. Maybe the tumor is the cause of his absurdly high iq. So it has to be copied to his clone and the clone like the original body doesnt last long. Also theres no way they let someone with over 400iq to die even if it means doing this. Unethical sure but the advances hes making in his field are certainly unmatched.

Absolutely outstanding - the script, the performances, the visuals and production values are superb. My only quibbling criticism, is that the wonderful visuals of the space station were somewhat marred by the obligatory credits. I know it's a ubiquitous thing now, but they detract from our engagement with the story being told, and I wish we could go back to the old policy of the credits being before and after the story we're watching, whether it's a TV show or film.

I was thinking shouldn't Mr. Freeman's proper title be Doctor, and be addressed as Dr. Freeman? A Physics Professor would have a PhD.

Rutger probably thinks of "doctor" as a job description (his own and his colleagues'), and if Freeman has earned the title "professor", it's perfectly appropriate to use it, especially if it avoids confusion. In the Navy, a Marine Corps captain riding on a ship will often be called "major" by the crew, as Navy tradition says there's only one captain on a ship.
