I cannot believe none of them know the Toy Story lore, it’s established with Forky in Toy Story 4 that a child’s love is what gives a toy sentience. He’s trash, he knows he’s trash, but Bonnie loves him so he’s a toy, given a purpose to live. With that logic, if a kid loved playing with a kite it would be alive, with or without a face.
@jacquelynchin55136 ай бұрын
they forget that in the first Toy Story there are toys that were taken apart and put back together bc of Sid. There's the fishing pole with barbie legs! No face but it comes to life!

RE: who was cool in school? it was less of who was cool and more of who was just normal. cool was reserved for drum line. i think for fine arts, they were right in the middle: varsity dance team, theater, choir, and band. art itself was the most neutral. and color guard was definitely towards the bottom.

I'm with Shane, I'd want to be a Lego minifig. Parts are swappable (by Toy Story logic, I think only the head would carry my consciousness) so I could change up my look, there's all kinds of accessories, there are houses, castles, and starships I could hang out in, I could probably even build my own place.

I always appreciate when creators set themselves boundaries and understand that despite many things being inspired by the creator's IP, certain fan spaces are for fans only. People should really stop asking for creator validation for all things they make and/or do because that way lies madness. From a creator standpoint, yes, it is much healthier to avoid reading fan blogs, fanfic and even snark threads on reddit. Anyway, another great episode

I was never an intern, but one of my earliest jobs was painting miniature Disney figurines for Hummel. I thought it was going to be great because all I had to do was sit and paint cool figurines while listening to music on my headphones. Very quickly, I realized how repetitive the job was going to be because there was zero variety. I would just get stick after stick of the exact same figurine (with four or five attached to the stick) and have to paint it, exactly the same each time, over and over and over all day long. It was incredibly boring within a couple of days (and we weren't allowed to talk to the other people there while working). When you see those kind of figurines for sale, you assume there's some artisan-ship in the painting, like each one is "lovingly crafted by an artist," but it's really just an assembly line of bored people, sitting in cubes, making minimum wage to crank out as many figurines as they can each hour. I was also an overnight radio DJ when I was about 19 or 20 and, again, I thought "Hey, this'll be fun." It wasn't. It was an adult contemporary station (so, think of the sort of generic music you'd hear in the background of a dentist office) where a Paul McCartney song was considered "too hot to play" because it had an electric guitar in the outro (we could play the song but had to cut away before the guitar came in (like we were censoring an obscenity or something)). Also, we could only play songs off of a list of about 20 songs we were given, in the order they were listed, and everything we said was rigorously scripted by an outside consultant, so there was no room for any kind of creativity or personality. Every couple of songs, we could dryly back-announce the last song, pre-announce the next song, and say a scripted line like, "Soft hits all the time..." followed by the call letters. Period. And nobody was listening, especially overnight when all the dentist offices are closed. We'd run contests every so often (with prizes like "tickets to the local fair" or lunch at some local restaurant) and literally nobody would call in. I'd have to make up a random name and location and pretend like somebody won to keep up the illusion that someone was listening (for whom we were keeping up the illusion is beyond me specifically BECAUSE no one was listening). It was a relatively easy job and, at first, I enjoyed it well enough, but I still remember the day - about a year and a half into it - when I was sitting there watching the timer tick down to the end of a song so I could start the next song and thought, "These are the seconds of my life ticking away while I sit here and stare at a timer." I didn't last long after that. It didn't help that the pay was horrible. The MOST soul-sucking job I've ever had though was during a brief time after I moved to a new state and worked as a packer for Amazon. My job was to literally stand in one spot, pick up an item with my right hand, pass it to my left hand under a scanner, drop it in a bag, and push a button (to tell the machine to seal the bag), 700-ish times/hour for 10 hours/night. It was tolerable at first because I could listen to music or podcasts while I worked, but then they banned earbuds or headphones of any kind (bc apparently some people were looking at their phones too much instead of working) and we just had to stand there and do the job in silence (other than the sounds of the machinery and various alarms and buzzers going off around the building whenever a machine broke down or a belt stopped). If you ever want to spend 10 hours a night with your thoughts spinning out in your head, solo-relitigating old arguments, thinking of things you should've said in a conversation 5 years ago, getting anxious about the past, present, or future, etc, get a job at Amazon. It's especially fun when they do things like have a mandatory break time but then keep counting your hourly rate during the break as if you're still working, then complain about how your rate has dropped when you come back from break. Or, like, when there's no work because the main belt that routes packages around the building has broken and they still come over and complain about your rate (It's like, "Bruh, do you want me to mime putting packages into a bag? The belt is empty"). They pay relatively well for the kind of work it is, but, having experienced it, I can say that that way madness lies. Thank god I found my way into the video game biz and became a Game Designer. Having a job is better than not having a job but it would be hard to go back to the monotony of some of these non-career jobs I had back in the day. More power to the people who do them and do them well but my brain just DOES NOT work that way.

The cultural makeup of my school: Band kids: neutral, awkward, I think they're cool Jocks: neutral, some fit the meathead stereotype but there wasn't really any bullying Choir kids: prissy, self-important Theater kids: horny, self-important Orchestra kids: like band kids but more arrogant and less people knew you were in orchestra International baccalaureate kids: the smart kids, god's gift to humanity (according to the teachers). An equal combination of arrogance and stress, more than the average high schooler. I was a choir kid with overlap in theater. Most of the kids were average to cool, a select few were the worst people you will ever meet in your entire life. I wasn't in band but most of my friends were and they were pretty awesome people. If the boys in band hadn't recruited each other for choir, we wouldn't have boys in choir. So the boys' group had the best personality, because they were band kids. Looking back, it didn't matter so much what group you were in. There was a lot of friend group mixing. You were either cool and fun, nothing to write home about, or the biggest pos and made it everyone else's problem when really you should have been in therapy.

As a person with ADHD, my natural tendency is to avoid doing things like dishes, laundry, etc. in favor of things that are more fun and offer that immediate dopamine/serotonin boost (rather than the delayed gratification of "If I do the dishes now, I won't have to do them later when I'm ready to cook something," e.g.). Listening to podcasts like this one keeps my brain entertained while I take care of the housework, giving me the best of both worlds. I used to put on other types of YT videos (gameplay content, movie/music reactions, etc) while cleaning but quickly found that I spent at least half the time watching the screen and eventually getting sucked into the content rather than doing my work. Time after time, I'd find myself standing there, watching the end of the video I put on to clean to, and realizing that I didn't do any of the actual cleaning. Then I'd pick another video and end up doing the exact same thing. Because podcasts like yours generally don't require the visuals (though I do have the video on, I can just listen to it and get the same experience), it allows me to get the dishes and laundry done without veering off-course and standing there watching a video for an hour with a half-washed dish in my hand. Basically, if it wasn't for you guys and podcasts like yours, I'd be living in total filth, high anxiety, and deep depression so, y'know, keep up the good work!

I love hearing the social hierarchy at other schools because mine was a technical/vocational high school, so it was kind of wacky! The schedule switched every two weeks with two grades going to regular classes while the other two were in their shops, which was a trade we would choose and start in the second half of 9th grade, and stick with until graduation. Generally speaking, there weren’t really solid cliques with a clear label besides the athletes. In most schools they’d be referred to as the popular kids, but they honestly weren’t that popular, because no one besides them cared about that kind of thing. Other than them though we didn’t have stereotypical cliques. Within some shops there was kind of a hierarchy, but the less students in them the less likely that was. Before starting shop everyone was usually friends with people from their town (30 different towns combined) and people they met in class, though after starting shop a few new groups were formed. Besides sports we also didn’t have band/choir/drama and there were maybe(?) two clubs that barely anyone joined, so where a lot of schools get their social scene that way, ours couldn't

i wake up at 5 for work & i always drive locally to just take in the scenery & the podcast is almost always up on Spotify at that time it’s only a 15-20ish minute drive but i continue where i left off on the ride back home & once home i’ll watch the video !! it gives me something to look forward to !! i also DO listen to this @ the gym bc i don’t do intense workouts also idk what it is about the Mail Time jingle but it’s so cute & sweet & wholesome it makes me slightly.. like.. i guess emotional ?? & it reminds me of Steven Universe

I listen to all things Watcher during my work time. My productivity sinks because I'm laughing so hard. Im glad I work at home or else my coworker would be concerned 😅

I always watch the pod from home. I swear that my tablet play button is connected to my office mate's mouth. They always start at the same time, so I wait until I'm cuddled up with my pups.

RE: Where are you listening. Just got home from school (later in life college career change), taking my dog on a walk, making the both of us dinner and cleaning up before studying.

I feel like other podcasts are too structured or the topics aren’t random enough for me. I thoroughly enjoy listening to dudes being bros for an hour even if it’s about candle or soap

Also 100% the question said alternate universe, and my brain went: out there somewhere there is a show where tiny human Shane presents puppet history, and human-sized Professor goes on ghost hunts with Ryan. I welcome this universe with open arms.

Yes, marching band takes up a lot of your time, but a lot of those that did both sports and band were also honors students and were very popular in my school. My friends outside of band were very supportive of people they knew in extracurriculars. Wasn't hard to be part of multiple activities at my school cause it was highly encouraged to do so by admin. Was part of their "college readiness" ordeal to try and have as many students in AP/dual credit courses and be in extracurricular activities. Now that I'm older, I realize trying to enforce all that on students wasn't necessarily to have these kids ready to do everything possible in college, but to have kids exposed to a work load, responsibility, and learn time management and such.
