If you’re looking for a complicated watch to beat all other complications, perhaps you’d consider a tourbillon. Bold, dramatic and more fiddly than inserting an HDMI lead without looking, it’s surely one of the most impressive visual displays of high watchmaking. And the perpetual calendar, with its ability to tell you your precise location in time for many, many decades without adjustment, is surely one of the most staggering feats of micro engineering achievement. How about this little Cartier, then? It seems tame, but looks can be deceiving, because inside it hides the most incredible complication ever made.

I cannot imagine the kind of patience and steady hand it takes to construct such a thing. It would be like putting together a 5,000 piece jigsaw puzzle of a star-less night sky, blindfolded, during an hurricane, knowing that one mistake means having to start all over again. I couldn't even understand the explanation, let alone comprehend the thinking that went into this masterpiece's creation. I am awed.

It makes chimes to tell you the time on demand. it has three tones. First chime is 1-12 for the hour, the next 1-4 for the quadrant that the minute hand is in, and lastly the minutes within the quadrant. So TING TING TING, BING BING, ZING ZING ZING ZING = 3rd hour, (15-30) 2nd quadrant + 4 means the time 3:19. LOL

The name is misleading, it should be called something along the line of "audible time announcer". I've been collecting watches for years now and always thought the complication just set your watch back to the last full minute, maybe to synchronize it. Only recently did I learn about the chimes, so I investigated and came upon this video!

A repeater was a popular feature on pocket watches so people could tell time without having to take it out all the time. It was a lifesaver before lume and electric light came along but is very very obsolete now.
@PhillyHank
@PhillyHank 10 ай бұрын
Accurate statement. But, every mechanical watch and every complication is functionally obsolete now due to smart watches. Every single watch; every single complication. A dual (even triple) time zone complication isn't wonderfully eclipsed by any smart watch.

Precisely how swearing really should be used. I swear a little too much and it certainly loses its punch. In this case the rare use of a swearword really did give extra weight and emphasis to describing the difficulties and complexities in making this movement. A well deployed swear indeed!
