For over 40 years experience in watches, I said Quartz movement is the best of accuracy and reliability, but you need something to backup when the battery of your quartz watch runs out and the mechanical watch that counts. When in a rush, a solar watch always is my all time favourite.

I have both automatic mechanical and eco quartz. What I like about the auto mech is the relationship of if I am moving it is moving, or at least for the next 40 hours. My ECO quartz will run for a long time after I stop moving as long as it gets some light on it from day to day. I am not going to lie that I really like the grab-and-go of perpetual calendar quartz that I do not have to adjust every time I choose it in my rotation but I will not be selling the auto's anytime soon as there is that relationship I just can't ignore. Just my take and as I sit here typing this I am wearing a 15-year-old Breitling Steelfish that is not keeping perfect time but it has been on this wrist more than any other watch I have ever owned in my 73 years of life. At this point, I feel my Steelfish and I will probably be the ones to see it done at my end.

There actually quite a bit of high end quartz watches out there. Grand Seiko, Cartier, Omega, The Citizen, Breitling and many more all have high end quartz watches. If you want high end finishing with low maintenance cost, toughness, and great accuracy of quartz, they are out there. Some of the high end quartz are super accurate with +/- 5 seconds a year which is absolutely insane. Let say a person got a super quartz watch with unlimited power since they were born and died at 80. The watch will be off by 6 to 7 minutes on their deathbed. That how insanely accurate the watch is.

@@alexlilano1931 Not entirely true. Quartz crystals are subject to aging. The oscillating frequency changes over time. They need to be calibrated once in a while to compensate for this. Lightweight, comfortable, legible, full calender digital window, with led light to tell the time in the dark although not bad lume after all these years ... and the replacement of battery suggested once per 10 years, I did it after 14 years, watch was still operating. Analogue readout. A lot of super dooper options I have frankly never touched. Much better is its cousin from Waveceptor series, somewhere in the drawer. Mechanical servicing cost 500+ and they recommend to be serviced 2 to 5 years. Sometimes they need to take to the factory and it will be gone for months. Also more complication the more the price of servicing by hundreds. You can also get a solar quartz and almost never change out the battery. I know people who have solar quartz for 20 years and it is still works. I'm sort of bias. I got an Omega. Coaxial Service intervals increased is 5 to 10 years. Unless you get a luxury mechanical watch with high servicing fees, quartz actually last a lot longer than mechanical because servicing the cheap mechanical watch cost more than the watch it self. (Some people still service cheap watches because it was their childhood watch. I saw it on KZbin.) Quartz is also unbelievably cheaper to buy and service. I like quartz and mechanical, but it is like comparing a record vs an MP3. The new tech blows old tech out of the water. People still buy records and mechanical watches because of the novelty. Let be honest. Quartz watches and mechanical watches look exactly the same except the sweeping hand. I will give high end mechanical can last a life time. Technically you can also do it with quartz by replacing the entire movement of the quartz and mechanical when servicing it, they also replace parts. People also buy classic cars even though they are worse than today's modern cars. It is niche since it isnt logical. If people are having fun and not hurting anybody, that all that matter. Why watch sports, watch TV, or have small pets when it makes no sense to do too.

I buy mostly quartz watches, and to save on the longevity of the battery life, when I am done using it, I pull out the crown, and push it back in when I am ready to wear that watch again. No point in the watch ticking if I ain't wearing it. One can say its redundant, but it's no different than if you're wearing a manual which will stop working after a couple of days if its not being used

thanks for the good explanation why a quartz watch is not worse than a mechanical watch. for me the best technologies in watches are spring drive and solar quartz. by the way i also have some mechanical watches which i also like very much. but quartz is king for me

I have 5 watches I wear ( 2 mechanical, 3 quartz ). The Mido TV big date is the one I wear the most. My favourite however is my eco drive The Citizen which is the best watch I ever had. Citizen is really underrated, most people prefer Grand Seiko. However I like the perpetual calendar and the better accuracy than the GS .

Same here; my daily driver (so to speak) is a Citizen Eco Drive ProMaster Diver's, the BN0150-28E. ISO certified to 200m of water resistance and keeps extraordinarily accurate time - one of the best tool watches available. Like you said, it's a shame that Citizen so often gets overlooked when discussing quartz watch technology.

Love all the subtle jokes and jabs in this episode! As to "science is scary," here's a fun fact: I'm a scientist (yes, I worked in rocket science) and most of us in my R&D lab all wear mechanical watches! From the humble Seiko 5 to a Rolex Milgauss, there's no logic behind the reason.

I had the choice between the quartz prx Tissot and the automatic one. and I went for the quartz. because I'm poor, no other reason. I do love it though! adorable watch the strap is amazing, but it has one flaw, it lacks those tiny hole size regulators, so you only get to adjust by adding or removing parts to it.

Had Bulova introduced a nice 38mm Precisionist I would probably have it. Quartz analog watches just bug me with that second hand movement and then they don't even line up on the markers. So I have 2 digital G Shocks for quartz and a couple of Seikos. Since during normal wear I set my watches 3 minutes fast, precision isn't necessary, but I find I go back and forth between my g shocks and my Seikos regularly.

👍👍👍 Great video! No hate, no fundamentalism. 😊 I LOVE automatic watches. But I'm a quartz guy, because I would want to wear an automatic watch (maybe even a hand made one) all day/everyday out of love and respect. Given my lifestyle it would be impossible. I'm lucky I still have my hands.

Well said , SPRING DRIVE! The movement itself of course, not the watch! They have to enhance the designs of their watches, every Grand Seiko will become boring (or even annoying) after a while, specially their automatic watches, except the quartz watches from the Heritage collection.

I have no idea where I stand on this question my collection is up at 200+ watches now (none especially pricey, I like the ordinary ones mere mortals can afford) and it's about 50/50 between quartz and mechanical. I'm happy in both worlds, just as content meddling with a car as managing fleets of computers and software for the wage-paying employer. I guess I just like pretty things that tell the time.

I prefer quartz movements as there is no escapement working like a hand brake on a car just to control the speed while driving and thereby using up most of its energy. Regarding Grand Seikos Springdrive, it too has a brake, a magnetic brake acting as an escapement.

The answer is obvious if you like precision, ease of use, and affordability you should buy a Quartz watch.

For me come on my own both and I wear both. However, I think the real difference comes to the emotional connection. With a courts watch, you’re not really going to form it emotional connection to your watch because it relies on a computer and a battery to keep it alive. I want it dies can either change the battery yourself, or throw it away and buy a new one for 100 bucks at the most The majority of quartz watch types. However, mechanical watch relies on the wearer to keep it alive either through wearing it, or winding it. They also can last for decades if not centuries if decently maintained. Meaning that a pocket watch bud in 1832 can remain in the family and can remain working to this very day. In a way a mechanical watch becomes a part of the person wearing it

If I get a quartz watch I’d rather it be solar so you never have to change the battery or it has a latch like the moonswatch where you can just slap in your own. GS quartz look awesome but I ain’t trying to take the time and energy to send a quartz watch to Japan to change a battery. GS quartz look amazing though

The difference of quartz and mechanical watches is something like that of a painting and a photograph. The photograph is inexpensive, incredibly accurate and can be mass-produced. The painting is so difficult to make, expensive and not really accurate to detail, but it is something actually made with human hands

I can get a quartz Tissot for less than essentially the same Tissot with a Powermatic 80 mechanical movement. In some cases the quartz movement is COSC certified to the higher quartz accuracy standards. Battery replacement is a nuisance, but… I’ve had the same solar-powered Citizen radio-sync watch for ten years. No batteries, no maintenance, five new leather straps until I bought a steel one.
