Can You Tell The Difference Between a Cheap and Expensive Chronograph? | Watchfinder & Co.

The hand wound chronograph is perhaps the foundation of a high-end watch company’s ability to demonstrate its prowess, a complex, intricate assembly unencumbered by a rotor weight hiding the mechanical wizardry going on inside. There’s no better palette upon which to exhibit the art of fine watchmaking-but can you tell the difference between one that’s more affordable and one that’s very expensive?

You really need to change the term cheap to something like, “more affordable” or “not that expensive”, it’s ridiculous to call an Omega “cheap”.

We are talking about a watch as expensive as a second hand car and that costs probably the same to service. It’s pretty offensive to call a high luxury masterpiece with tons of history a cheap watch. It’s as high as most wealthy people would go for a watch. 10k+ is for people with really, really a lot of spare money or just for idiots who buy things they can’t afford

Pareto's law or more familiarly, the "80/20" rule applies everywhere. Omega is a fine example of watchmaking, the Breguet more so and PP the ultimate. Each representing an exponential increase in work and value. I would place them at 80, 95 and 100 percent respectively. That last 5 percent costs more than 10 times the first 80 and 4 times the first 95. Their value lies in one's ability to appreciate the level of refinement and workmanship. Your videos and explanations help to educate me, and I'm sure others, to develop that appreciation. Unfortunately, my bank account hasn't appreciated in kind!

Pasquale you’re as wrong as you are right. £5000 is, in isolation, a lot of money. But if you factor in the design, execution, testing, quality control, the years of training each member of staff goes through and the technical ability required to assemble such an intricate mechanism it’s not very much at all. It’s not what a watch is or what a watch does that sets mechanical watches apart, but what it says about those who put it together.

For a mechanical movement it's not that expensive. It would be like saying " cheap car that has a V12". It's cheap considering the internals it has, i don't say i'll buy one, even if i make a good use of my money, but i just say it's the value of big brands and high quality watches.
