The search for the perfect watch is an endless one. It needs to be historically important, it needs to be aesthetically unique, it needs to demonstrate watchmaking excellence-and importantly it needs to offer good value as well. Some say the perfect watch doesn’t actually exist; here are three examples that get incredibly close.
Featured Watches:
Jaquet Droz Grand Seconde Email Ivoire J003033204
Girard-Perregaux Sea-Hawk 49960-11-131-FK6A
Eterna Royal KonTiki 7755.40.50.1289

@V P I do know about their automatons however we are talking about wristwatches. They sit differently on other shelves. A lange for chonographs with tourbillon and sonnerie which was quite robust versus jaquet droz fragile art watches.

That Eterna is beautiful! nice to know that there are watches out there that look amazing but don't break the budget necessarily. My nearly perfect watch without being too expensive (as you asked) is the Hamilton Khaki Auto. It has an automatic ETA movement, date function, can be dressed up when required and works great in the field.

My head jumps to Nomo Weltzeit. It has some many creature comforts, innovative design, great proportions, high standards of finishing, it is just an over all complete package. The only thing is that it is not a watch with a lot of history (yet!). That thing has a lot going for it for how much it costs.

I love the Case and bezel of the eterna. The subdial position and the hour markers are absolutely perfect. But the chapter rings of the subdials are just too bulky and the ring in the middle of the watch are just not my type. It is a 90% watch... just not enough for me to consider putting it on my list

The perfect unlimited budget watch for me would have a Lange finishing, a Breguet tourbillon and hands, and a JLC movement. Budget constraints: Oris Rectangular Complication. Great pedigree, rectangular case, curved sapphire glass, and a guilloche, sunburst dial with polished applied Arabic numerals (which reflects light light a diamond sans bling). Day sub-dial at 3, Date sub-dial at 9, GMT sub-dial at 6, and Moon Phase at 12. Never seen a GMT and Moon Phase complication together before. Under $1000 if you can find it.

That Eterna is beautiful, the story behind the watch along with the heritage of the brand makes the whole line worth looking into. The basic Kontiki (still 200m) can currently be picked up at below £600-£700 in the UK at that price I don't think I can turn it down! I take those and raise you what I consider to be the holy grail of the collection I have built rummaging through estate sales and junk shops around the world, my 1970 Seiko Chronometer at 49 years of age she now runs +/-0.5 per day and normally balances out to about +2 over the course of a month. As it is 'just a Seiko', I paid a price that you would not believe and unsurprisingly less than the cost of servicing it (an experience that has been very much a Japanese affair and at a price that makes omega's £500 service a bargain) but a limited run timepiece of horological significance is likely better than I will ever find again. It has certainly been a bit of a conversation piece especially with the story behind the purchase.
