Interesting topics in this one! We as watch people don't give jewellery and haute fashion houses the credit they deserve for their unique designs. They sit outside the mainstream watch industry and bring a completely different aesthetic to their watches, something you would never get out of Rolex, Omega, Longines, Seiko, or any other watch-dominated brand. You can even see this in Cartier, which is the weird outlier of both a major watch house and jeweller. They have a distinct aesthetic that is carried through all of their watches. We accept this as normal because of their history, but it really isn't. Bulgari also brings this to their watches, and the Serpenti is a great example. Watch enthusiasts don't care about it at all, but it's one of the most iconic watches of all time, especially for women. Hermes is another, along with Van Cleef and Arples.

100% on hating new designs and then hating that everything is the same 😂 I think thats why i really respect Bulgari (and if im being honest, a nunber of design/jewelry houses producing high level pieces) - the designs are unique, but still feel like they belong. They don't try "too hard" to be different, they just design differently, imo.

@BrittPearceWatches7 ай бұрын
I think we have very similar tastes! ;) I think a lot of the jewellery / fashion watches can't rest on heritage and have to actually make something new and push things forward! Like, the H08 is a seriously cool watch! Octo's and Bvlgari are seriously investing in their watchmaking!

As someone that loves snakes, I'd be all for a slightly larger, mechanical Serpenti. I also love the case design of the Octo Finissimo though I think I like the dial layout of the Octo Roma more. I'll also give them major props for making men's mechanical watches in yellow gold that don't seem to be limited editions. Not that I can splurge on such a thing, but it has gotten a bit tiring to see only pink/rose gold used by most men's watch makers that work with precious metals the last several years. You know it's bad when Rolex is actually standing out there.

I mean, I can get behind the idea of not only being interested in watches you can afford.... But something like the Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC goes beyond that. It's just engineering for the sake of engineering. Nothing horology about that (and on top of that, with a cost of 650k usd). Same as with Jacob&Co pieces. It's just jewlery with a watch function.
@BrittPearceWatches7 ай бұрын
I don’t think I agree! But that’s the thing about watches - we can respectfully disagree. :) I think the idea of engineering for the sake of engineering could apply to the new Ultra COSC, but not the octo finissimo as a line!

These watches were designed by Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani - say this name out loud and how can you not love his designs. I love Bulgari watch designs. They are unqie and special. However, make sure you try them first, thanks to the very broad bracelets (that taper thankfully a lot) they can be uncomfortable on some wrists. I was ready to buy a cool Octo and then realized it just didn't wear comfortable on my wrist since I wear my watches very close to the hand. Was a shame. Am a bit jealous of people with a different wrsit shape to mine.
