It was cut from the final film, but the kids are orphans and shortly before leaving London their aunt who was raising them was killed by a bombing. I hate that it was cut cause it explains so much about the kids and their characters.

Don't forget David Tomlinson as Emilius Brown. Amazing how went from playing a strict but empathetic father in Mary Poppins, to an entertaining con man who unintentionally causes magic to happen. If I was to choose between which character had a better arc, I'd probably go with Emilius Brown.

The impressive "old looking" establishing shot of the village is actually about 90% matte painting, with only the central section with the car filmed in live action. The Major General leading the home guard is played by Reginald Owen who also played Admiral Boom in "Mary Poppins". His film career began in 1911 and ended with this movie. The cast also includes other ex-pat Britons who made homes and careers in America: Tessie O'Shea, Cyril Delevanti and Arthur Malet (also both in Mary Poppins" ) and Roddy McDowall.

Less well-known is the fact that the studio originally wanted Ron Moody to play Mr. Browne. He was agreeable, but fresh from his great success as Fagin in *Oliver!* (1968), he thought he deserved top billing, which the studio could not offer him, having already promised it to Angela Lansbury.

the extended cut of the film had been lost until the 2000s or so. that when they had found the original print. but i don't think this was that version. as that one had an additional scene with the priest, which had to be redubbed as the audio for it was lost.

@@RaptorNX01 I’ve seen that cut, too. I have it on DVD, since that’s the only way to watch it now. While not all of the restored footage works to improve the movie, I appreciate that some characters are more fleshed out and the inclusion of that one subplot that you mentioned is better explained, if not exactly justified. Additionally, the editing is smoother during some scenes since there are fewer cuts.

Ah! My childhood! What I love about this movie is that it's a kid's film where the main protagonists aren't really the kids. It's the older folks who aren't afraid to try something new later in life and we get to see a lovely romance blossoming. I might sound rather patronising to any of the older crowd, but it's nice to be reminded as a kid that adventure doesn't have an age limit.

I am glad you enjoyed my third request and hope you will like the Muppets when you get to them. So first I would like to say yes that was the father from Mary Poppins as the lead male Professor Browne, Eglantine was Angela Lansbury who was Miss Potts in Beauty and the Beast among many other roles, The reason during the soccer game the "medic" birds were disappointed each time they were told to turn away is because they thought they would have a meal as they are vultures and thought he was done for, One of the biggesr points of interest is the version watched is actually a shortened version as the film originally was over 130 minutes long and among the things cut were a song Miss Price sings when flying for the first time, Mr Browne had a song called With a Flair, A longer version the song Eglantine, There were more conversation scenes that were taken out, and then in the late 90’s Disney did a restoration of the film to put back as much as possible and in the case where scenes were missing the audio they had actors come back to redub their lines and in the case they couldn't or were too old or dead then someone else dubbed their lines in and you hear a difference and the only scene they couldn’t find the fottsge for was Miss Price's flying song A Step in the Right Direction which the insturmental can be heard of during the scene and in the overture, The film had a couple Oscar nominations including Best Original Song for Age of Not Believing losing to the theme from Shaft, but did win for Best Visual Effects,

This was one of my favourite movies as a child (along with Escape to Witch Mountain). I liked it better than Mary Poppins. I always get Portabello Road, Bobbing Along, and Substitutiary Locomotion songs stuck in my head after. I loved the mystery of the book and when the Bookman tells the story about the Island run by animals, it always gives me a chill. And the Lion and the whole soccer match sequence is so funny. My sister and I quote from this movie to this day. "Eh Birrrdeee" and the Bird gasping trying to tell the King the Star was gone. lol Funny I never even thought of this movie as a "witch" movie. I don't feel like the centre of this movie is her trying to be a witch but more about the spells left by a Wizard which they need for the war. I feel like the bigger components of this story is the War and mystery of the book. And as a kid I thought the fighting scene and the end was hilarious. Still so glad you reviewed this movie. Hoping you get to my all time favourite Escape to Witch Mountain.

14:16, Yes. That is David Tomlinson. He played Mr. Banks in "Mary Poppins". Also, when this film came out, alot of people quite obviously compared it to "Mary Poppins" considering how similar the 2 films are. Another fact is that the "Beautiful Briny Sea" song was originally supposed to be in "Mary Poppins", but the film crew decided to cut it, and it was later used for this film instead.

My brother and I grew up watching this film and we always found the final battle hilarious XD I think perhaps if you watched this when you were younger you might have gotten more enjoyment from the slapstick in the last scenes as it's aimed more towards children in that regard. Incidentally, if you've never seen The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, that movie also begins with children taking refuge from the Blitz by moving out into the country, which is where they start their adventure. It was a program instituted by Britain to try and protect the younger generations from the War.

17:55 - I think the reason she has such an fierce motivation to get what she needs is because she's trying to aid the war effort with what she's trying to learn. The movie does a great job of flushing out this issue in more detail but leaves it just vague enough to keep you guessing somewhat as to her motivations and why she's so fiercely zeroed in on this pursuit.

There is a directors cut version that was released on DVD some years ago... It is a COMPLETELY different movie despite only being 30 minutes longer. The plot revolves much more around the War and the loss of family in the conflict... It's much heavier. It makes since why Disney ended up playing the animated talking animal sequences more in the end cut. Thanks for watching this. It's a movie that shouldn't be forgotten.

Accdg. to Richard Sherman, in the original script, on the island, when Emelius says "I'm an entertainer, perhaps I can cheer up the King", they were going to put on a music-hall show as a distraction to steal the amulet: Emelius would do bad magic, the boys would do bad comedy, and Eglantine would steal the show with a music-hall song. BUT, Jungle Book was still coin of the realm at 70's Disney, and Ron Miller wanted to go with the wacky Robin Hood-like cartoon-animal soccer game instead.

The concept came before Mary Poppins' concept, but they put a lot of effort into Mary Poppins and then kinda rushed finishing up Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Well, he does have copyright to worry about, same with any other reactor. Nobody ever promises a full experience unless it's on Patreon. Either way, Nick is definitely worth watching and probably my favorite movie reactor on KZbin.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up! Glad to see you enjoyed it too! Also the part about kids being evacuated from London because of bombings is based on real history from World War II. Lots of kids got sent out of the city to stay with literally anybody in more rural areas who was willing to take them in. Sometimes family or friends, sometimes kind strangers like in this movie. Their dads were mostly drafted to the military, and their moms mostly either worked jobs that men had been drafted out of, or helped with military supply or medical stuff.

36:58 I've heard that Angela Lansbury (RIP) *hated* working on this movie due to the vast amount of special effects involved, similar to the cast of _ALF,_ so this awkward laugh was likely her venting her frustration.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. I watched it every time it as on The Wonderful World of Disney. And played the soundtrack (on LP when that was the only option 🤪). It’s where I fell in love with Angela Landsbury

Remember that the spells that worked for Mrs. Price were spuced up by Professor Brown in his lessons. It was the two of them that made magic work, not just her.

Disney had a special camera setup that let them combine animation with live action. Nothing else has ever matched it.

Right?! That bit caught me a bit off guard, just the way he was so blunt about it. The part where the witch guy asked if the bed was safe for travel and Nick just shrugs was also pretty funny 🤣

Honestly, I enjoyed the finale as much as the rest of the movie. Very original to have objects animated by magic to fight off a Nazi raid on England.😊

I like the film, but the quality is certainly mixed. As a kid, the living armor was my favorite part, especially the big spooky executioner.

The song "With A Flair" was in the original movie but cut out later..I don't know why beacause it was awsome in the movie

A little bit of "With a Flair" remains in the movie (you can hear David Tomlinson talking through part of a verse at 13:55), but you're right, of course, that the full number is not there, and not really sung, to the movie's detriment.

I didn't see this film til I was a little older in the late nineties. As a Brit seeing Bruce Foresyth as the spiv that threatens them with the knife was very jarring. he was Mr. Saturday night for several decades at that point and carried on for another decade or so before he finally retired. As far as I was concerned and I think most of the country he was not an actor that played villains but a friendly TV host.

I’m not sure if you’ve reacted to it or not, and I’m not sure if anyone has ever requested it, but I would highly recommend watching Kiki’s Delivery Service. It’s an animated movie which is about a witch, and as far as movies about goes I think that one is probably one of the better ones in my opinion.
